I heard this alot but for me the sollution is not to remove instances. If the world PvP is fun and rewarding people will do them. If instanced PvP is more fun and rewarding then people will do them.
So the devs need to make sure open world PvP is fun and rewarding. If it is tedious and boring, removing instanced PvP is not the sollution.
The best pvp gear requires both open world (ala Ilum) and instanced pvp tokens. This is most likely the best solution so that there will be pvp for both types of players. I think Bioware did a decent job trying to address this.
This is exactly my beef with SWTOR and Bioware...
They gave us chicken, more chicken and more chicken... they didn't trust in their own skills and enterprise and they certainly didn't trust in us as gamers...
Just as my Dad used to say... choose a frickin side for gods sake... any side... but just choose one and stand by it... don't sit on the fricken fence like a fairy.
Players will always want rewards. People are naturally greedy. Players have always migrated to the greatest reward (typically instanced pvp). Bioware wants players to try out all parts of their design so they should make rewards encouraging both instanced and world pvp.
I like both pvp types (instanced and world) but honestly prefer evenly matched team pvp. I will however definitely make an effort to world pvp because of the rewards. So there will be more world pvp simply because you will have those whose desire for rewards motivates them to do the other type of pvp as well.
Auto tab target button mash pvp, no thank you. I'll stick to waiting for Planetside 2 for some proper PVP.
I am actually pleased that Bioware did nothing more than copy WoW... all the love will very quickly fall away and hopefully it will be the catalyst to force companies developing new MMO's to start taking risks again.
- you will permanently loose your stuff if you die and get looted,
- you get long respawns ( talking about 10s minutes not just 1 min respawn )..
No loss / Gain sense at all => no point pvp.
Pvp is fun when people can loose/win stuff. thats when people start to play the good stuff, adrenalin pumping and all.. if people just respawn.. its a joke and total meaningless.
THIS!
and i like to add: the ability to control territory 24x7. occupy & defend your territory longterm. build up cities and forts to support that.
but whats a reason to do so? i dont think some magic points and skill-boni would work longterm. what works are better ressources to mine or loot from mobs in such pvp-zones and craft the better stuff. people are greedy, you know? and usually this works much better in a player-driven economy, where crafting is the heaviest kind of pvp. real pvp is more complex:
- fighters win battles but crafters win the war.
- and traders and politicians beat them all
but for such an open territorial pvp you would need a huge world or even better a lot of planets to control. think about the 0.0-space in EVE and now imagine the 50 guilds on your server try all to occupy and control their personal territory on Illum. it is simply not huge enough for this kind of pvp. and just this kind of pvp is of interest for me. perhaps some genious theme-park dev will design an alternative in future. i would be very astonished, if this guy is already contracted by Bioware.
so NO: Illum is not "Open PvP" according to my personal definition and wishes. it is too small, has still to much regulation and is missing a ton of features needed to be called open. for me, it is just a big Battleground with a bit more freedom. perhaps i am surprised, if I see it myself later. but i doubt.
This is what I'm looking forward to the most. No amount of new content could possibly compete with the forever changing dynamic, player-driven wars.
Quoted from the Old Republic Blog: "We have an entire team dedicated to adding content and features to player vs. player. We have some of the most experienced PvP developers in the world on this team. So far very few people have seen, or know much about the stunning Open World PVP on Ilum; when you get to the high levels prepare to be blown away! In addition to that high level PVP content, expect new Warzones and new PvP features on a regular basis."
