Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me (Re: Funcom's blockbuster failure TSW)

Sheep have been led to poisoned water twice now.

For some unexplicable reason, Funcom stock has went up in anticipation of TSW despite the following facts:

a)  Funcom has far less money than it ever did to develop and promote the product;

b)  Funcom is participating in a far more brutal mmo market, right in between SWTOR and GW2 and well, 1000s of social facebook type MMOs from North America and Korea;

c)  Funcom is releasing TSW on a far tighter release schedule with less testing and with less beta feedback.

It is going to be a catastrophic failure.

I guess time will tell.  Little birds from beta thus far sing a different song.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

I heard nothing but good things from the Beta of Conan, so I don't give that a lot of stock. I still think it's a bit early to claim TSW is going to be a failure.  That it's from Funcom is enough to make me wait a while before buying it, but I think the unique gameplay will give it an audience even if there are some issues right out of the box. Guess we'll see.

You could be right. It may well be the disaster you are prediciting. There is always a chance though that it won't be. So what do you recommend to the people who are interested in this game? Should anyone even try the game?

I just refuse to judge a game on anything but its own merits. I don't really care who made it. People can learn from their mistakes. It is possible. To be so close minded just doesn't make any sense to me. It is just as bad as saying this game must be great because (insert developer) made it.

I will be cautiously optimistic until I have the chance to try it for myself.

People have a right to be skeptical about this game moreso than any others seeing as how Funcom has never released an MMORPG without major problems at launch.

I will play this game, it looks good and seems to offer more than most these other half mmo's being released. But i wont pre-order or get anything above the standard game becuase 90% of the time the items are worthless or cant use them til lvl 25+. But im getting tired of wasting money on so called "epic" mmo's only to be disappointed (TOR).

But from what i have read and seen it looks to be a good game with lots to do........... then again that might just be a trap lol

I won't touch this game until at least 3 months after release.

During Anarchy Online launch my CD-Key did not work and upon contacting Funcom I was told that I need to fax them a copy of my proof of purchase and my ID. I was a bit reluctant to send this information to Norway.

During Age of Conan's launch, the last patch that was released during beta has made the game completely unplayable for me. Before the patch the game ran smooth as silk. Not to mention the lack of contant during certain level ranges, the poor customer service and downright lies and deceit by the developers and community managers.

Needless to say, I don't have a lot of faith in Funcom. Can they pull of a smooth launch and a decent game with TSW? Possibly. I'd rather wait and see.

Just like Wows success not automatically makes Titan a success anything FunCom make will not automatically be a failure.

Most people fail a few times before learning the ropes and you might not know it but Blizzard started by porting Amiga chess games to PC a long time ago.

It is very possible that TSW will be just like AoC player wise but it is not a must, let every game proves itself by it´s own merits and wait with shooting them down before you tried them.

just like another game you turned away from. i have seen recent beta footage, they need to scrap that hard april release window.

get an understanding....i'm not saying it's crap. it needs more development time.

I actually loved Anarchy Online even with its million bug release client.

Leets were so funny I could overlook a lot.

You are forgetting AO.  Your title should be "Fool me twice, Shame on me, Fool me a third time and I am a complete idiot,"

Remember before AoC's release Funcom said hey don't worry we have learned our lesson from AO.  It turns out the only lessons they learned from AO's release was to hide the game from potential players prior to release and to lie to their beta testers saying the game they were playing is way behind the build they would be releasing along with a long list of promised features they knew would neve be in at close to release.

Now Funcom is saying hey we learned our lesson from AoC.  We won't make that mistake again.  Which makes me wonder what new way have they learned to lie and steal peoples money.  It should be quite entertaining to watch this upcoming disaster unfold.  I am sure they will hire and pay someone to post their spin on these forums like they did with AoC.  Cough cough AmazingAvery maybe you need work again.  I am sure the fanboys will come out doing their best DnL impression and defend the game as the greatest game ever made and call everyone vile names who dare to question their undying faith.  TSW has all the makings of a great  horror film ready to unfold before our eyes.  I have my popcorn.

Still, sometimes people eventually learns a lesson.

I for one don´t drink Tequila anymore and it took a surprisingly long time to figure out that it was a bad idea to drink it.

What I am saying is that I wouldn´t pre order the game but it is too early to say it is a failure just yet. Wait a week after a release or maybe a few and then consider the game based on what you know then, maybe you get surprised and if not you havn´t lost anything.

To pre-order a MMO  is rarely a good idea anyways, but you usually know a few days after release if you should buy a game or not. And with FC, be careful so the starting area isn´t the only polished area of the game...

    B) True. Although one could also say that there is a large population who are sick of loot treadmill WoW clones and fantasy MMOs

    C) You have no idea what you are talking about

    You sound bitter.

As for Funcom AO was not a bad game, was a terrible launch but the overall game was pretty good, least to me :P As for Conan did not care for the game but even worse than the gameplay was players the game attracted.  Worst community in any game I ever played.

All we can really do is hope that one of these companies finally gets it right.  For me every MMO in the last 5 years has gone in the wrong direction from what I enjoy.  Even existing MMO's I use to enjoy have become unplayable.  TSW sounds like my type of game, but as someone posted earlier I will wait at least 3 months before trying any MMO's going forward.  I really hope TSW is a great game I think we are owed one for all the crap we have been given over the past few years.

On the bright side, funcom's previous two MMO releases were also considered "catastrophic failures", but both games were fixed and ended up as excellent AAA MMOs.   So if Funcom's proven anything, is that they have lots of expertise in recovering from catastrophic failure and still making good games.

I'm tired of the MMO space =. I plan to stick to the secret world, no matter the faults, as long as I can. I love the game's fundamental idea's and setting. Instead of falling into the hated past, or hyped future. I plan to actually play this game instead of complain. I like living in my denial. I'll try and find four other like-minded people to start a group.

Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
    Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2

No offense, but you've seen 15 minutes of beta footage from one guy.

Not the same thing as playing it yourself.

I'm far from going into defense mode over this, the game needs work, yes, but the april release looks pretty much on schedule to me.

Obviously you will need to take my word for it.

    +1

My thought exactly. So tired of the same old same old I will play and stick with this one. At least its something different, and at this point its either support people who are trying to change the genre some, or quit it altogether.

Thats why GW2 will get my money ( B2P , no raids and PvP as a focus and not an afterthought)

TSW- New questing dynamic, modern day setting, skill based character progression, ect

They may fail and suck but at least its something different. Not WoW on a spacestation with glow sticks.
