Originally posted by scaramoosh I started to play WOW again after hating it, found the Bloodscalp server and getting groups all the time Soo much more fun than EQ2 because no risk fun gameplay, no hassle and no 2nd job
That would explain exactly why you like it more. EQ2 wasn't designed to be 'no risk'.
I loved EQ2 at first just got bored of it i guess, several months of gameplay is more than most games
Things i like:
Crafting system
Artisan quests
Combat HO's
Lore and legends
World event quests
Things i hate:
Bland and boring landscapes
zoning
clicking bells to get around
Graphics
Only 2 zoned cities which are ghost towns
Merchant systems arn't as good as SWG
Takes forever to get anywhere
Need groups for everything! Wish we had more of an option because the servers are soo empty i can't find a group
No new players so everything wil be made for high content and will kill the new players
People do realize that World of Warcraft has zones right? The regular kind (ala EQ1 and EQ2 where you go from cities to the tram systems) and the hidden kind like Anarchy Online and Dark Age of Camelot where you pass between zones but it's extremely quick. Everytime you go to an area and a new name shows up showing the new area and you change maps, you are basicly zoning. It's just a different kind of zoning is all.
Even Ultima Online has zones to a degree. It's just that WoW seems seamless but it isn't 100% from what I experienced.
There are simply 2 reasons why WOW have 12 times the players of EQ2:
1) Warcraft is a milestone of the game industry, and it has millions of fans (I am one of them, although I am not such a fan of WOW)
2)Whilst WOW was aimed for the casual player (plug and play game), EQ2 was aimed to..............well let's say SOE didn't have a clue which category to target, so they choose to stand in the middle, making a game that wasn't neither for casual nor for hardcore players. Result EQ2 is a bit of an "ermaphrodite", it s neither a man or a woman............. or better, it s both of them. Confused? well that s what it feels like when you play EQ2.
I haven't played EQ2 primarily because my first MMO was EQ1, and it really didn't appeal to me at all. Objectively, I know that EQ2 was made by a different staff working for a different company, but I still can't work up any interest whatsoever for it intellectually or emotionally. I hated EQ1 enough to keep me away from anything containing that name. Since the game is technically a sequel to a game I didn't like, there's no initial draw for me. I avoid it for the same reason I didn't go see "Scary Movie 2," and likely for the same reason I'll avoid World of Warcraft 2.

First off EQ2 can run on just a lowend comp as WoW but not looking as good. EQ2 has a MASSIV options to tweak the game to you liking.
Second PvP is soon here (sept 12 i was told), in the exspansion pack witch will include the main game for new players to the game not needing to buy it as well.

Taking a year just to implement PVP does show once again that SOE was wrong about their market. They assumed that just because PVP wasn't popular in EQ that people didn't want it and couldn't enjoy it. I think it was a bold move on Blizzard's part to involve PVP so heavily into their game when it had never succeeded outside of RVR in DAOC.
For me it was more soloablity and I've played both
I started EQ2 on the day it was released and lasted till Feb. I was in one of the biggest guilds on Najena, Explorers of Legend. There was always something going on. But I do not agree with the patron system as it can leave out players because patrons are always trying to increase guild level for raids, guild options etc.
Also while there seems to be some solo quests they are painfully slow to do or are almost impossible to solo. This was before they patched in a few soloablity patches.
As for WoW it is too easy as one poster said. I have a level 60 hunter and a level 46 rogue and I'm bored to tears. I will say the road to about level 55 was very enjoyable. But now there is nothing left but running instances over and over for gear. Unfortunately that isn't something I like to do
In the past, Blizzard fans enjoy the products they buy and they always know what to expect and can enjoy it more.
In the past, the majority of SoE customers may have enjoy the games they play, however, Johny keep promising the moon and deliver a handfull of dust(they deliver much more then that, but this is how the players feels because he keep promising so much, did you really want me to link the promise he never deliver to soloers?). This dont buy loyalty. Peoples didnt try EQ2 as massively, and at the first sign of bad reviews, they turn away. (Johny could argue with words, but if the fans believe he say something, the fact he could prove them wrong is only going to aggravated them a LOT more, because they hate fast talker even more then liers)
A 2nd reason? WoW is more casual friendly and not necessarily at the expense of the hardcores(there is a lack of hardcores content, but WoW is prolly unsure as to how deliver it, so they pause and think without making any promise).
A 3rd reason? System requirements.
A 4th reason? WoW is more regular. I dont see as many "big changes" in WoW as in EQ2, sure they did a few nerfs, but relatively speaking, I think nerfs in WoW where the smallest nerfs I ever see in the MMO experience. This buy loyalty, peoples hate to lose their toys!
A 5th reason? PvP.
A 6th reason? I dont think there is a 6th reason ATM in the favor of WoW. There are some reasons in favor of EQ2, but they are not doing the difference now, but since the launch, EQ2 catch on WoW in NA...and not just a little...a LOT. There are more peoples in NA that play EQ2 then WoW as we speak, and this trend is not going to reverse.

City of heroes didnt have PvP when it released.....and hmm havent played that game yet either. I wonder why.
Well, I didn't even read your whole post SuperNerd, make a paragraph for corns sake.
Ok here's the answer. Why are 3.5 million people playing World of Warcraft (if my figures are wrong just save it) while Everquest 2 is seeing maybe 300k or so? (again, if my figures are wrong just save it)
Because World of Warcraft is so generic and simple any n00b who never even picked up a video game before could play it. Also, EVERY n00b who ever picked up a keyboard has heard of Warcraft. Save your lofty answers about Blizzards rep. You don't get over 2 million subscribers just because of quality, you get that because it's so easy, and it's a name people recognize.
The only thing that would be more popular is if there was a freaking Tetris or Bubble Bobble MMO.
I belive that the reasons are many. Among the most important reasons are:
Blizzard name, Hype and extremely positive reviews in magazines, simplisity (you don't need to look for hours after a group that will fold 30 mins later...) and that is is a well made game, entertaining and easy to play and master + doesnt have a lot of bugs!
I play WoW, EQ2 and SWG myself. Have also bought and played CoH and GuildWars but those games were not my cup of tea so to say. Been SWG player since 2003, EQ2 player since start and WoW player since start. I have to admit that I spend most of my time in WoW. The reasons are the magic and stunning beautifull world with an awesome soundtrack that makes adventuring exciting and gives a magical atmosphere just like you were wandering around in tolkiens Middle Earth.
I also like the fact that there are always so much to do and that the classes have such a variety in their skills and playstyle. It makes it very interesting. Also the whole world is in my opinioan digital art. Blizz really knows how to put the x-factor into their games.
EQ2 was a dissapointment for me. So many of the guildmembers in my SWG guild left to play EQ2. Out of about 15 people that left, 12 are back in SWG. 2 Plays WoW and 1 is still in EQ2. EQ2 prommised to be the next generation but to many it was a great dissapointment. Why?.. Zones, no mailsystem (that was added after wow came..), no PVP and so on. I enjoyed EQ2 a little. Made 3 lvl 30 characters, but I never found it adictive like the others.. even though I love my chars there.
SWG is another one of my favourite games. No game, and this is a reason why I belive this game will win in the long run, has such a great community as SWG. The community is helpfull, mature and enthusiastic. And the fact that you may respec your character whenever you want (when you are bored of being a rifleman you can focus on crafting or try another fighting profession) makes it interesting and gives your character a strong identity (since you have only one). Also the entertainerprofession and the fact that you can make a great living only crafting or entertaining makes it a TRUE mmorpg game.
SWG has the best community, best charactercustomizating and ingame customization (Imagedesigners and tailors), playercities and housing, best crafting system (EQ2 is a disaster.. compared to this and they are both SOE titles)... and so on. Only drawback is that there are too many Jedis atm... (I remember the days where they vere extremely rare).
I will stick to WoW and SWG while I wait for Vanguard.. then I have to see what I do. I have a job, a family and a social life, so I cant entirely live in cyberspace.. lol

Yeah because we all know Square-Enix sell millions of copies of their respective RPG's because they are so easy. If you think WoW is popular simply because it's easy to play. Then guess what... you are wrong.

I played EQ2 after running out of content in WoW and the one major thing that stuck out for me was that it was nothing like EQ1 where I spent five years. There was something hauntingly desolate about the game, I can't put my finger on exactly why it felt this way but I quit soon after soloing in Zek. The game just felt hollow to me.
1.name.Blizzard/warcraft known to the RPG community.EQ only know to mmorpg community.
2.high specs. Not many will pay $1000+ for a new system to play EQ2.Even if you are not in school or university thats still a lot of $$$.
3.No pvp in EQ2.While i think WoW made a laughable attempt at pvp it still has it.
4.Plug and play.WoW is so easy to get into.EQ2 despite the tutarial is still very hard to get used to compared with WoW.
5.Time.EQ2 requires more time to achieve something.WoW is more casual.
6.Good marketing.EQ2 released worldwide.WoW did it regionally.Just like DAoC and others who did this it has always shown to be a major boost to sales to make mmorpg have eu or US or asian servers.
While we hate to admit it,but sad truth is people rather play with their kind.I seen a nice american on skullcrusher(eu server) refused admission into my former guild because they just did not want an american and like 50% of the guild were in favour of not having him.And he been living in germany for over 15 years!
...because many people are stupid and WoW is a game even they can figure out? (Sadly some can't figure the game out...the quests tell you where to go but people still ask...)
Human stupidity never ceases to amaze me.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
I can't speak on behalf of other people, but I play WoW instead of EQII simply because I find WoW's style more approachable and friendly than that of EQII.
Anyone can play WoW... It's Like Diablo... and diablo was very popular.
To sum up why it's so popular: Brand Name, Warcraft's Popularity, General World Wide Popularity, Easy to get into, Fun to play with friends, No Risk in death.
I believe that WoW is aimed at a younger player base. There are a lot more young adults playing PC games than there are adults.
People that say this always amuse me, clearly they are guessing instead of actually doing some research.
The average game player is 30 years old. Yes that is 3-0, not "young adult", or "kid". Unless of course you are calling 30 year olds young adults, and to that I would say thank you. I would say adults tend to skew toward PC's over consoles, and some consoles (like the gamecube) cater to younger audiences. Why? Adults have the buying power and can spend their free time as they wish. Long ago gaming may have been dominated by the younger crowd, but it has been evolving and for quite some time now has been adult dominated.
I think there are a few reasons for WoW's success, I didn't want to read through all the replies so these are probably already mentioned:
1) Name recognition. The Blizzard and World of Warcraft name most likely brought in a number of new players to the MMO genre.
2) Accessability. The game is more friendly to new players, and does alot more hand holding along the way.
3) PvP/RvR. For fans of this, EQ2 is not even an option. Granted, so far Blizzard has really not done a very good job with their system, anyway, but at least they have a system.
