Ill agree to the game being a second game but not because of your reasoning. the only thing i see that makes it a second game is because of its Buy To Play model. The game actually looks reletively good from my perspective. Don't clump me in with the fans either i have no interest in this game. your just talking out of your ass OP.
Personally, the B2P pushes it even further to a "first game" for me... I can't justify paying a subscription to another game that will inevitably get smaller and smaller shares of my time. I've already cancelled three Eve subs waiting for this (and the fact that it simply got boring...), and now do a little TF2 and the original GW while I wait.
Have to admit... really starting to like the soldier class in TF2. Engineers need rocket launchers.
I dont want to argue over this - or negate your high expectations of the game - but few points to discuss:
a) GW has always been a "second game" for most players.
b) Why is that? Cause it has no subscription, its easy, and almost f2p.
c) Dynamic events arent that special. Warhammer had those, Rift has those (Instant adventures was implemented alongside with Rifts). You can play those for an hour or two at most, but after that it gets boring grind.
d) Lets face it. NcSoft/AreneNet sucks hard time in making endgame content. NcSoft hasnt really succeeded in making anything properly on mass-scale. Lets see Lineage2/Aion Mass pvp that lags so much that you have hard time telling what is happening. GW is the only succesfull NcSoft end game product, but, if I may ask, if the games name already is Guild Wars, then for how long can you be bothered to play a different forms of pvp-only only as end game? Warhammer failed hard time with this concept as did Darkfall. If you say, go do dynamic events, then read my point (c).
ok we wont argue because your points are valid for you. But for me and most people I know they are completely invalid.
a) played GW as a first game and a lot of people I know didn't play it at all.
b) no subscription has absolutely NOTHING to do with it infact many have proven that Subs are not needed to run a great game.
c) Warhammer was a crappy comparison because it wasn't a great game in its entirety so that is negated. RIFT on the other hand was an amazing game and brought dynamic events in a completely different way. That being said GW2 will have "dynamic" events but your actions will cause changes unlike anything we've experienced before. As they will get boring after doing them over and over the game offers so much more then just this. BUt like I said at top these might not interest you as they do so many other people.
d) bad computers and internet connects make for bad experiences in massive battles. Some of us didn't have any issues as you described. and the point about end game content is totally invalid because this is a different type of MMO that you nor I have ever seen so we can not expect the same cookie cutter garbage such as end game raiding and such. Mind sets are mainly going to be the reason people are going to be held back.
I've played nearly every game that has been on the market in the last 10 years, WoW was way to simplistic for me and most of the people I play with. I believe that it has caused people to stop learning and to stop being productive as gamers. ALL of the changes and inivation that GW2 is bringing to the market = something that will be my full time game if atleast for 2-3 months until something bigger and better comes out.
Sub fee's will soon be a thing of the past, traditional grind fest linear questing will follow it because its BORING. I'm sick and tired of playing the same MMO with different names and slightly different graphics as have been EVERY game that has been released since everquest.... Time for change and GW2 looks like the start of this change.
Will it be a second play when bored with main game?? HELL NO because right now there is nothing on the market worth playing, NOTHING....
With Gw2 having so much to offer I don't see myself playing any other mmo beside it. I hate P2P model so SWTOR, Tera or Archeage go off my list. Secret World is just not for me. I'd rather play Gw2 and from time to time some good single player game releases.
Meh, for some people, the OP will be absolutely 100% spot on, I have no doubt. For me, who knows. It will depend on the game.
I have to admit to being a bit skeptical about DEs being the next best thing to sliced bread. I think there are going to be ample opportunities for them to become every bit as stale as traditional quest hub levelling, and sooner than folks think. I hope I am wrong, but maybe not.
For me it could be a second game, if TSW is decent. The point is, who gives a crap? I mean, so what if it is all the things you said it was, OP? If people have fun playing it, and feel like they got their money's worth, does it really matter?
I would agree that this game will probably fall short of many's people's unrealistic expectations, but who am I to judge? I am one of seven people left on this site who still like SWTOR. ;-)
And with that in mind, GW2 will probably blow my mind.
The truth is, the only reason I am not all that super excited, is I am just sick and tired of the fantasy genre MMORPGs. Probably why I am hanging on to SWTOR harder than I normally would.
Completely agree. Really couldn't have said it better myself. Folks on here get over extended on these type of things. It's rather simple...do you enjoy the game? Good. You don't? Okay, time to find something else. All this nitpicking over a game not even released or getting overly defensive about it is a bit much.
And why are folks chiming in that GW wasn't their second, but their main game? Not like he said EVERYONE played it as a second game but let's be honest and objective. Most honestly did. I know I did. Does he have a specific source? Of course not. Kind of idiotic to even ask him for it. That doesn't mean anything when compared to GW2 because it's a completely different approach. Could it end up the second game for some? Yeah. But this time it honestly will probably have more to do with the other games released or upcoming than GW2 being buy to play. As someone else stated GW was an alternate game for many because of it being corpg AND being b2p. This will be an actual MMO.
I have no idea if this will end up my main game. SWTOR is for now. I don't really care. All I care about is if I enjoy it or not and the fact I may actually finally have some real options. Why folks think the game they enjoy just has to be the best and everything else sucks is beyond me. I like having choices and flexibiity. So give me more games that make me sit there and say 'Damn...what do I want to play? So many good games!' It's a hell of a lot better than 'Everything keeps failing and I have to go back to WoW....again.'
a) GW has always been a "second game" for most players.
b) Why is that? Cause it has no subscription, its easy, and almost f2p.
c) Dynamic events arent that special. Warhammer had those, Rift has those (Instant adventures was implemented alongside with Rifts). You can play those for an hour or two at most, but after that it gets boring grind.
d) Lets face it. NcSoft/AreneNet sucks hard time in making endgame content.
I fail to see that people play other games because GW1 is free to play. There's no direct relation between the two. While a lot of players also played other games, I don't think it was unique to GW, it also happens quite a lot in other games.
What GW1's main problem was (imo) is that it lacked incentives to keep playing, I agree with your point #4. We had the silly achievements/titles, which in my opinion is a very sorry excuse for content. And the last expansion released another feature that required more grind than before and it wasn't a very original one either: reputation grind. And as GW didn't really have level or gear grind like other games, a lot of people - understandably - quit playing after a while.
But in a way it's a problem (almost) all mmorpgs face: " How To Make Fun End-Game Content". It's not just a NCSoft thing (and don't forget ANet was founded by former Blizzard employees). It almost always comes down to the trinity "PvP, dungeon grind and achievements". At least I have good hopes that Anet makes the dungeon grind part more based on indvidual skill and teamwork than gear superiority.
All this doesn't mean GW2 doesn't have the potential to become a very, very good game. But it will be so because it's very casual friendly, pretty looking, have nice and intuitive gampelay, very well polished and bug-free. It won't be because of all the very new and revolutionary ideas and features. In a way ANet seems to have run out of great ideas. I'm not sure how dynamic events will seriously turn the mmorpg world upside down, as WAR and Rift already proved. And with the new races and the removal of secondary professions they seem to have moved closer to the safe "mainstream" themepark feel and gameplay. Yes, even without dedicated healers.
A) Who cares if this is a second game. It being f2p means lots of ppl will buy it. So it will hopefully break 2 or 3 million units in a year. And gw2 isn't gw1
War and rifts dynamic events were a joke, so assuming unlike things will end up the same is dumb. Also the world skill pts will drive world content. Also with 2 viable leveling means it will lesson burnout and the fact that each levels exp remains about the same it reduces burnout. Also the dynamic events in gw2 don't really look like repetative grinds. Finally gw2 actually eliminated the quest hub grind stuff and you can't predict how well that will pan out. C) yes, it's pvp oriented and those games failed bc the pvp sucked. Structured is an equal playing field and wvwvw will keep balance x1000 better than 2 factions. D) I like a game that doesn't force me to find 7,9,14,24, or 39 other baddies to clear difficult content. And until we see more dungeons NO ONE can say if it will or will not be viable end game pve content
If you mean by looks the graphics, then I admit that NcSoft has always done "good looking" games. But, the mechanics behind servers and gameplay isnt working as intended in NcSoft games.
Ncsoft? Wait a second. I live here in Seattle very close to Arenanet offices and I have never seen any NCsoft employees there.
Are you tellling me that the publisher is secretly sneaking into the Arenanet offices at night and changing the game to the way Ncsoft executives want it?
So some asian programmers are secrectly flying over every night? Super weird because all the Arenanet dev's I've seen look like very white typical seattle resident's.
Ncsoft must be very sneaky to accomplish this without any arenanet dev's noticeing don't you think?
Wow if this is the case than we should do something about it! >.>
Last I checked Arenanet is ran by white people from Seattle and last I checked it has been stated numerous times that Ncsoft has little to nothing to do with developement of Gw2.
ARENANET!REPEAT THIS 10 TIME VERY FAST!yes ncsoft own arenanet but its like saying activision own blizzard!.if activision had made wow it would have closed a long time ago! same for guild wars!as for those saying yes but aion was arenanet!wrong aion was imposed on arenanet by ncsoft!arenanet began at guild wars 1!they made one game but it was so awsome by this game alone they so convinced ncsoft with their good result that now this time around they got the full financial might of nsoft.
it make me laught people trying so hard to mish mash everything together like this!
as for ncsoft they also made good game, but they have a harder time here for somer reason !
this is why arenanet next title is a huge breat for ncsoft.the only downside ,is arenanet announcing it too early.this might be the only thing hurting gw2!
Anet had to announce GW2 when they did, otherwise they would forever be trying to explain what happened to there 6 month new content cycle.
Why is it that almost every single day, someone has to come along and write up yet another post trying to discredit or otherwise slam some game.....any game......any game other than the one they are actually PLAYING? Seriously....I want to know the answer to this.
Furthermore, judging games that aren't released is just plain stupid. And if you don't know enough about the dynamic events in GW2 to comment about them intelligently....why bother commenting? I'm making my judgment based on what I've seen with my own two EYES, not on preconceived notions and loathing for a game I've never played.
When will these ignorant threads on this "topic" stop? It's just pathetic.
I didn't bother to read this ENTIRE thread, but I bet the OP hasn't been back to comment or read, has he? Talk about obvious. One post right? Like...only after the first comment or something? lol Of course I'm assuming, you know, like he assumed he knew anything about the game he was trying to smear. lmao Take each for what they're WORTH.
I actually agree with what the OP is saying. I do believe that GW2 will be a second mmo for most of us.... after GW3 comes out.
I see what you did there.
But seriously....I don't see how it MATTERS even if GW2 was a "second game." It's buy to play, so....how does that matter exactly?
How will people complain about a game with no sub?

Actually that is exactly why I like monthly fees as odd as that sounds. I also never buy "lifetime memberships" or lock into long-term contracts in general (in life not just gaming). I as a consumer love to have leverage on the companies providing me services. Nothing is more satisfying than quiting a game and knowing they actually care that you quit.
But I understand all those broke bastards out there that like the cheaper model LOL. One benefit of being an oldster with a good job I guess. Gaming is so utterly cheap compared to my other life's expenses I always chuckle at those complaining about $10-$15 a month fees. But thats how I roll I guess

I totally agree, but you see stuff like that all the time. The game isn't even released yet and yet we're going to complain about everything. Some of the time you can find actual beta footage that disproves some of the worries, but other things....we may have to wait until the game is OUT to criticize or approve of those things. Yet....give it an hour and there will be ANOTHER post on these boards criticizing some game that isn't yet released. /rolleyes
Even though GW2 has no sub....people will complain when playing because they still bought the box. It's still a product, so I expect people will have reason (in their minds at least) to complain still. Ya know? And I suppose that's fair. It is still a product.

Well, it's not like you are committed to buy new expansions or products from the store. You have a much bigger leverage with B2P or F2P games than with P2P games, because you pay in advance, see what crap you bought, but have no chance for a refund. Expansions are usually reviewed and you know exactly what you are going to buy.

If anyone working for these companies actually cared about you, they wouldnt be trying to shaft you out of $15 a month for another bug fix update patch. Nothing like making you pay for thier screw up's to show you there respect for you as a customer.
