Here is the MMORPG article here where John Riccietello announced yesterday that EA has 1.7m subscribers for SWTOR, the vast majority of whom have extended beyond the free 30 day period and are now paying a monthly subscriber fee:
Here is the original article:
I think we must all applaud EA for these amazing figures. On sales of 2m units (both digital and box) they now have 1.7 m subscribers. That's an 85% conversion rate. That's not just a stunning achievement, it's unheard of in the industry. Even Blizzard only managed to convert 70% of those who bought Cataclysm into subscribers - and they were selling to a a subscriber audience that was already paying subs for the game.
I don't mean to be difficult but the achievement is all the more remarkable because in January, Eric Brown, the CFO,announced that SWTOR also had 1.7 million subscribers.
http://torwars.com/2012/02/02/two-million-copies-of-swtor-sold-1-7-million-subscriptions/
This means that in the space of three months, EA has LOST PRECISELY 0 SUBSCRIBERS for SWTOR. That's an achievement that approaches the miraculous.
Eric Brown left the company a month ago rather quietly.
All hail EA! All hail SWTOR! This is the greatest victory since they blew up the Deathstar twice!

And I have a bridge to sell you too.. I just lol.

I love how people will fail to realize you are being sarcastic, good post O.P, I am in for a ride reading this thread.
What? You mean that:
- John Riccietello isn't a notorious bullshit artist?
- Riccietello just regurgitated yesterday a half-remembered fact that he'd heard Eric Brown put out two months ago, not knowing that it wasn't accurate even then?
- Eric Brown got out out of the company as discreetly as he could before someone actually took a long, hard look ayt EA's figures and the ensuing shit-storm means some execs go to jail?
Say it ain't so, Shoeless!
Sarcasm doesn't work well on the internets OP. I hope you brought that flame shield.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
Just a hunch I have... but I think this thread might end badly.
Unless of course it gets locked soonish.
I hate to say it cause i don't want any company to fail but, aside from the fact that the march article says exactly the same thing as the original feb article, it's mathematically impossible to have the exact number of subscribers as before, they would have either gained or lost by now to show something other then 1.7 mil subs, subs fluctuate in every game ALL THE TIME. So what does this prove? This proves nothing, and it proves that articles written like this will capture people's imaginations about what's really happening behind the scenes. I can't really mention the source but there was an article about how a certain man in charge took alot of people over to a foreign country, you know where many companies outsource things, and he supposedly spent 500 million dollars a day putting them all up in a really great 5 star hotel for ten days, which was completely false too because months later another company put out the same article with the same numbers. Yeah the article you are presenting today is just like that, old out of date data that is touting as being modern.
They must think we're stupid or something. Well.... some are i suppose.
Okay well on second read it seems the OP might be attempting sarcasm and if so it's extremely subtle. Bravo if this is true!
I can't believe you don't believe him I mean the servers are all full at prime time
/sarcasm off
I think the OP is trying to be sarcastic.

Congrats EA. I dont play cause its a themepark. But still grats!
GG EA. One step closer to being SOE.
I think the OP is trying to be sarcastic.
lol.
funny post Op.
On the other hand, they might actually get a record on the most subs lost in the shortest amount of time in the mmo market.
+1 OP!
Internet sarcasm is a fine art. Takes a lot of work on fonts and colors to make it work. I sadly don't usually have the time to pretty my sarcasm up like OP did. Thread will be fun to check up on if Mods don't get butthurt first.
BTW I REALLY wish EA would quit releasing this shit. Not necessary. Personal opinion drives reality. EA is just trolling BOTH sides.
Bartoni's Law definition: As an Internet discussion grows volatile, the probability of a comparison involving Donald Trump approaches 1.
It depends how bad January was, it would be a close battle between TERA in Korea and SW:TOR here.
TERA I feel is a good game but it launched with no content...it started with 1million concurrent users, one month later it had 1million concurrent users...2 months later...500,000 lol.
Look, I bought the game and finished the content in the first month and never subscribed after that. So believe me I'm no fanboy. The PVP sucked although I did find their take on the story to be somewhat innovative. I have mixed feelings on it.
But those that think EA is officially and blatantly lying to investors about a confirmable metric like that, are just plain idiotic or are too young to understand what it means to work for a public company. Investors sue and executives go to jail for blatant lies about metrics to investors. They lie sure, but only in more subtle and unprovable ways. They don't say "As of this exact date this exact number of people are subscribing" when it isn't true. If they did lie about this, then he will 100% get sued and possibly go to jail.
I really think the anti-SWTOR crowd is over-reaching on this one. I am surprised at that metric, no doubt, But I believe it if they formally announced it to investors.

Yeah, I hear you. I get that way too. So much negativity that eventually it's like the chinese water torture, wearing you away bit by bit.

People say the pvp sucked and I didnt do any world pvp... But huttball was the freaking awesome.
For one, they didn't say they have EXACTLY the same number of subscribers.
Secondly, it's no less possible to have an extremely mild loss of retention than it is to see subs go up significantly or down. It's a number, just like any other.

OP bought the Collectors Edition and has already suscribed for a year.
"All hail EA! All hail SWTOR!"
lol
This statement is the exact same one that was made before. Almost verbatim which is slightly odd. So they experienced neither any growth or recession? How the fuck does that work? However, they do once again chime the majority line rather than specifics so...kind of hard to hold them to anything without specifics and simply using the majority schtick...again...with the exact same figure.
I'm going to hold out judgement one way or the other until I see their next quarter's results. I personally think regardless the article that there has been a drop in population but as I keep saying we'll see soon enough though. Certainly was a rather severe decline on the two servers I played on.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I find this incredibly hard to believe for some reason. All MMOs dip in subs, EA stating they have zero loss does not seem credible.
