GW2 500k Facebook Fans - SWTOR 2million

Pretty big discrepancy. Think this means anything for the success of the game?

I dont, for one star wars is a well reknowned brand name. and probably attracted some people in which never playedmmo's but who instead liked the franchise. dont get me wrong i hate swtor, and im not too sure about gw2 but this much is obvious at least to me. i could prob think of other valid points but i think ill be lazy and let other's do so lol.

This and Swtor is out while GW2 isnt released yet.

    I laughed.

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.

P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)

Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.

So you think numbers will go up quite a bit after launch? I'm not sure there's much we can read into these numbers either, but I was pretty surprised there was sucn a big difference.

    Short answer: No

Longer answer: I don't think how many "fans" a game has on facebook is a good indicator of long term success. If anything, it is a better indicator of how much hype the PR department was able to generate. Hype can also be a double edge sword: While Hype can help boost interest for a game, it can also create unreasonable expectations which just leads to mass disillusionment when the game releases... TOR anyone?

A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...

Name brand comparison alone, Anet doesn't have the draw that TOR does.  It will completely depend on word of mouth most likely.  Even then, there hasn't been a truly popular MMO with action combat to date, so there's that dynamic working against it too.  It most likely will do as well as its predecessor, which was decent in its own right, but most certainly wasn't the big money maker they thought it would be.

well, lets see. I don't "like" companies with facebook because I think it's just another way for them to get information they probably don't need.  So I would say that the numbers imply that GW2 fans have a more discriminating nature when making decisions.

Nah they won't least I think.

I'm not suprised by the difference, unless we are saying IP's don't mean shit lol.

    LOL!

That's crazy. Did SWTOR create a botnet for Facebook followers or something?

Facebook isn't really a reperesntation of the MMO market, like me... I'm an avid gamer but hate facebook.  Have an account cause I had to for a req comp course in college n have touched it since the assignment of it a year n 1/2 ago.  Mosly people use the like option in facebook in hopes to get into Beta.

Even with those 2 million likes the game isn't doing as great as people hoped and it's future is looking pretty bleak.  Question is though how much pre-purchases did ANet sell of GW2, now that would be a good comparison.

Facebook is just a marketing ploy that producers utilize.  Since BW/EA/Mythic dumped a ridiculous amount of money in marketing, maybe even more then Blizzard has in WoW's lifespan, it makes sense that the SWTOR facebook page has more likes the GW2.  SWTOR marketing team is probably one of their biggest expenses.

But if SWTOR taught us anything, its that marketing will build up a ridiculous amount of hype for a game and sharply increase box sales - but it won't improve the quality of the game itself.

Actually WoW is 2.7 million. The indicator the OP is using isn't any type of good measurement. Texas Hold'em poker has 60 million.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

You have even an iota of a number supporting the statement that TOR has spent more in a year than Blizzard in all the time that WOW has been out?

Maybe because there are alot more poker players than MMO players?

WoW only has 1.3 million fans and has more sub than Swtor which has 2million. It all comes down to the name and TV advertising imo StarWars for obvious reasons, They also Advertised on TV, Blizzard also advertised on TV.

On another note the other game that advertised on TV was modern Warfare 3 which also has over 1million fans, Also modern warfare 2 has over 5.5 million for what ever reason.

Really?  Would have though that a ridiculous amount of money was put into an overuse of VOs.

You don't think more people play poker (video or otherwise) than mmorpg's?

Or it could also be that WoW was already establish prior to facebook and no one needed to go to it's facebook page.

It's Star Wars, probably the biggest entertainment IP on the planet.  That counts for a lot.  Guild Wars is pretty much unknown outside of gaming circles.

Skyrim sold over 10 million copies of the game in the first month of its release. and the elder scrolls has 700k fans on facebook.

    Yeah I agee.

There is slight concern though that Eve was also an unknown franchise which was #1 on this site for a long time. It was a great game, the little I played of it, but it's subscriber base is probably less than what NCSoft would consider a commercial success for GW2.

Kinda interesting that SWTOR has more fans than subscribers.
