In seven years, I hope gamers bitch about GW2 to the same extent that they do now with WoW. That would mean the game was ridiculously successful, that other contemporary games are much more interesting in general, that subscription fees are a thing of the past and that ANet is swimming cash so they can go on to bigger and better ways to knock the industry on it's lazy, fat ass.
Yes, I would like that very much indeed. And I'd be laughing while les miserables moan at ArenaNet's creative tyranny.
7 years is generous. Usually games get "hated" on much much sooner. Hell, recently games are hated on even before they get released, even before screens hit the interwebs. We are capable of "hating" just the very idea of a game.
No will it be the same case as with WoW? No. Not a chance. What WoW did was bring people who never heard about the genre into it. It happned before with EQ but at much much lesser scale. Nowadays, when a lot more people have reliable internet access, it's impossible to really have the same effect. New generation of gamers already knows what is MMO and how to eat it.
No to mention WoW-clone is term created by people who haven't played a MMO before WoW. That won't be the case with GW2. Part of GW2 population is GW1 vets, rest is poeple tried/bored of other MMOs. There is not really enough "fresh blood" just now discovering the genre.
Oh and Beta, since you have nothing good to ever say about this game, you might wanna read this....this game will be even more epic as time goes on. Here's why:
I'm honestly curious about this. Guild Wars 2 seems to be resonating heavily with what the MMO community in general desires. It seems like it'll be a very successful game. What would happen if GW2 becomes the new MMO standard? Basically, the successor to WoW? Do you think that seven years from now we'll be complaining about how every MMO out there is a "GW2 Clone" just like we do today with "WoW clones"?
Actually it's only the wow fanboys or the ones who started their mmorpgs lives in WoW that call other games "WoW Clones", the ones who actually know that WoW is mostly a rip off of other older games don't.
with that said, gw2 is mostly a rip off of other games. there is nothing in guild wars 2 that is "new" , they just made things a little different to pretend its new. do you rather talk to an npc, kill 10 mobs and deliver the quest or go to a heart on the map kill mobs until your yellow bar is full and be done with? it's the same thing.. just different methods.
In 7 years, after 4 or 5 large expansions, the game will feel old but it will still have a dedicated following and I'll be able to play it any time I feel like it because I bought the original box and there's no subscription... just like the original Guild Wars.
Will I hate GW2? No. Will I hate devs for trying to copy it instead of making something new? Yes.
This! I 'll enjoy GW2 for what ANET delivers, and then I'll move on.
I'll only be bitter when most every game I play in the next 7 years is a rip off its ideas and likely will be wishing for the return of trinity game play where healing really matters.
Oh yes, and no doubt I'll be waxing elequoent about how "good" the communities of the old P2P games were versus the now prevalent B2P model.

Don't think i will ever hate GW2. Will i grow tired of it? Sure, just like how i grew tired of the gameplay and combat mechanics in WoW, so will i eventually become bored with GW2. Sooner or later most stuff becomes trivial after extended periods.
When does the boredom kick in then - probably boils down to a matter of Anet's ability to provide fun and exciting content.
Only fools will ever hate the things that gave them pleasure once

Hm in Gw2 lots of features and things to do ... so if people play WOW for so long i guess Gw2 could remian longer ... WoW 1-2 mounth of playing and nothing to do exept arena but pvp there not so interesting
I think with anygame you can reach that point to where it is not enjoyable, just from playing it so often. I mean my first mmo was UO and I played that non stop for over 5 years, and the last 2 years i just logged on to talk with my fellow community of friends online. Granted this was when they started that trammel crap.
GW 2 is not going to get anywhere close to WoW in terms of its significance to MMO industry, in my opinion.
Is GW 1 hated after so many years? I dont know, I have not heared anyone speaking about it for years...it will be similar for GW 2, in my opinion.
WoW was significant to the MMO genre? WoW was an indie game which now struggles to barely keep its servers running lol. I doubt any non-MMO gamers have even heard of WoW.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
7 Years lol. It would be very nice if GW2 would still hold my interest by then. I have no clue if many MMO's will follow GW2's formula. These kind of predictions can't be done imo.
Lets stick to hindsight wisdom So if it turns out this way in 7 years we all go 'I told'm! You know I told'm! *grumble* *grumble* *waves with cane*'

Bliz have got lots of recourses so they adverded wow much more than other game companies and lots of people know about it because of Warcraft and SC i guess
The vast and general gamer population, or the specific subset of bitter&jaded found on MMORPG.com?

Considering that an entire South Park episode was dedicated to WoW not to mention all of the WoW references in shows like Big Bang Theory, I'd say many non-MMO gamers have heard of WoW and it's probably the main reason that the genre has such a huge player base these days.
Will we hate it? Depends on how successful and popular GW2 becomes. It it comes to dominate the market a la World of Warcraft, then yes people will hate it. It's in our nature to root for the underdog and hate on the behemoth. (This is assuming a successful launch where people doin't hate it already).
I think the proper question will be, will we grow tired of it? The simple answer is yes, we will. Most things grow boring after 7 years. It just has to do with aging graphics, advancing hardware, and aging mechanics. If GW2 comes to dominate the market, we will see 'GW2 Clones' in addition to 'WoW/EQ clones'. This will most likely only speed up the process of growing bored with the game.
Will GW2 last 7 years? Yes, I am confident it can last 7 years. Given Anet's track record with GW1 and the fact that GW1 is still going strong after 7 years, I'm positive GW2 can last at least 7 years. After 7 years, hopefully technology has advanced to a point where Anet can make GW3 or even start on a new IP with new systems and concepts.
Only fools will ever hate the things that gave them pleasure once
This. I loved EQ and WoW...SWG and a good many of the early games. Just because I am not interested in playing them does not mean I hate them, or even dislike them. Our time together has simply come to an end, and my interests or the game have changed.
Now, I do experience some bitterness when a dev (I am looking at you SOE) ruin a game I love by turning into a game I never would have played in the first place...(yeah NGE...I talking about you).
If a game is successful, AND has content and bug fixes throughout it's life cycle, I don't think it will be hated. Look at Anarchy Online as a good example. I don't play it, but it defintely has a following, and probably always will until it's shut down.
I think SWG could have been that way if it wasn't doomed after 2 major overhauls.

I'll likely prepurchase Guild Wars 3.
I think we will but when it comes to this GW3 will be there for us xD
i hope so... ^^

I'll still love it. The new-born MMO players of the future on the other hand? May be not.
This is not a game.
Hate, such a strong word isn't it.

You are talking about two different things, guild wars had a team of 7 people and is still one of the most sold pc games of all time
Guild wars 2 has a team of over 200 people, if they could make their last game such a success imagine now that they got so many talented people there.
And Ex-Husbands, of course.

Who cares?
I'd be glad to have an MMO that took 7 years to dislike. Most don't make it passed a few months.

If GW2 goes the wrong direction post-release and every other mmo follows, I'll definitely hate it lol.
