/shrug .. its just the Illuminati trying to press the market and social mood toward total collapse before the endgame date this year. 2012 here we come..
Nothing wrong with that. I'm for culling the population of the world but only through a chaotic system not some system of picking and choosing...like a random number generator.
* Good, honorable, gamers will continue to pay the bills so freeloaders can enjoy the game. * Sandboxers and Carebears are 2 sides to the same coin.
How much does an evening at the movies cost if you go alone? In the U.S., I can see a movie for about $10 if I don't buy snacks or a drink. So, if I can enjoy a MMO for three hours in a month, I'm getting my money's worth of entertainment from it. If I play an hour per day on weekdays and four on weekends, that's about 36 hours per month, or about $.40 per hour. At that rate, MMOs are cheap.
But, I want to hear how expensive a movie is in the UK. Maybe your ticket prices are so cheap that it makes more sense to see a first-run movie if you want to be entertained.
That's not the point. The point is that the current subscription fees are not justifiable anymore and are nothing more than free money for the publishers, money that we happily part with because it's about the cost of a movie ticket. It's not about the cost anyway, $15 is nothing. We're being taken advantage of and that is simply not right.
Publishers are aware that most players are ignorant of the fact that subscription fees are mostly pure profit and only a small percentage, if any, is actually used to pay for server costs, bandwith and future development. They won't say anything thing because it's free money and they want to ride it out as long as possible.
How are you being taken advantage of? Do you feel that the exchange rate between your currency and US dollars makes it unfair? There are plenty of reasons for adjusting prices in foreign markets, most of which take risks and exchange fees into account. Do you think subscriptions are unfair? If you think subscriptions are unfair, play a free-to-play game or go work for a game company for free. They have bills to pay and their employees have bills. Without your subscription fee, they can't continue to run the servers and develop new content.
If you think a subscription is free money, that is wrong. Most game development projects are very expensive. Take a look at SWTOR. They didn't make their money back, and the game has been out for six months. They still need more subscription charges just to break even. Many games are like that, especially when they can only grab a hundred thousand players instead of a million.
If a game cannot recoup the cost of development through box sales, then it's a failure and does not deserve to be on subscription life support. Most games do recoup their development costs. Look at ArenaNet. Not only have they managed to maintain GW1 for 7 years, but they were also able to finance the development of GW2.
Subscription fees are basically free money for the publishers. Compare the amount of content you get in one of the typical content patches, with the amount of subscription money you have payed. You payed a full ame price for an instances and a few quests. If that's not a ripoff I don't know what it.
But keep justifying it. I'm sure that the publishers are very happy with having you as a customer.
I read "deserved" then stopped reading.
I read your post and decided that it's best if I never see your posts again.
If you want to play a game that charges you for the box, then allows you to play online as much as you like without paying more, play a console game. However, don't complain to me when you get bored after a month. Those types of games are designed so you will play them for a week then buy the next game. Instead of spending $15 per month on a subscription, you spend $120 or $240 on new games. The $15 subscription fee is simply a way to support continued development of the game.
Dude, on average, you get about 1 content patch every 3-4 months. In that time, you have paid $60, which the cost of a full game, yet the free content patch does not reflect that value. What do content patches usually add? A few quests or an instance? Maybe a new PvP area? All for the price of a new game. You're being ripped off and you're defending it.
That's still more than what you get from most single-player PC games and typical console games. You pay $60 and you don't even get a month out of them, unless they have very good multiplayer. Most non-MMOs last me a week, maybe two before I get bored, and I have a full-time job. If you play them like you say you want to play MMOs (24 hours a day) you probably get bored after a few days. MMOs are the only games which I have found to consistently offer months of entertainment. If you don't see the value of that, then stop paying for them. Go back to your console games.
Not it really isn't. The only reason you get more out of a patched instance is because you run it over and over again to get new gear. That's not more content, that's replaying the same level over and over against.
Would you say that Rift is a game deserving of a subscription based model?
Trion is considered to be among the best when it comes to the amount of attention the devs give to the game. As well as the amount of content released. The game is a little more than a year old (1 year, 3 months) and has released 8 major content patches with a 9th going into public beta very soon. Not just raids and such, but entire systems have been added, changed, and upgraded. That's far more content than 1 patch every 3 to 4 months. It's more than a patch every 2 months.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. I'm hoping Trion set such a shining example though that other newer teams will take note. Ragnar seems like a fairly decent guy, I'm eager to see what he can do.
I myself am not a huge fan of Rift as well. I quite dislike the game, actually..
As far as I'm concerned, it can either go the way of Rift and Trion and be worth the sub, or the way of WoW and be a greedy little bastard, releasing patches every 3-6 months (your mileage may vary) just because they can.

true but at least it's not 100% voiced like swtor and has plenty of non-voiced quests. Also i don't see all the higher profile actors like swtor so that should cut down costs a lot and help make it easier to put out content.. but we shall see.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. UK pays more because they included London as a starting area. You should be honored to pay more. I live in San Diego, California. Had San Diego been a starter city, i'd gladly cough up a couple extra bucks a month
The difference is probably largely a matter of taxation. I am not sure how it works over there, but if the VAT tax is applied to this then it could very easily account for the difference, we don't have one here.
I don't think you understand...
Every MMO in the UK with a sub fee is £8.99. (WoW, Lotro, WAR, Aion etc.)
So why is The Secret World £12.99?
How are you supposed to compete with other MMO's when they're all cheaper, more well known and have larger companies backing them?
It's confusing and annoying. I'll play my early access, possibly the free month if I like it enough, and then probably stop. I don't think I could bare paying 12.99 when every other game is 8.99.
Unless the game is in a league of it's own (which I doubt) I won't be paying the sub fee.

Consider yourself lucky. My city, New York, is basically a bunch of warehouses and a tiny park overlooking a bridge.

It doesn't even look like Brooklyn to be honest and the painted skyline absolutely kills it for me. NYC has one of the most iconic skylines in the world and they couldn't even do it justice. I can't say much about London or Seoul, since I never been there so maybe those are to scale.
Edit: I originally wanted to play as an Illuminati but the starter city, the crappy deck constumes and wannabe Snooki handler killed it for me. Now it's a toss up between Dragon and Templars.

I've vacationed in Seoul twice, I want it to make it a yearly summer thing though. However, I don't know if the game could compact the space enough to make it really "Soulful"

It would make sense to me if this game is Region Locked (which it should be...everyone with people in their own kneck of the woods.)
If it is Region Locked like AOC was when it was released then maybe it's paying from some Europeeing Infrastrukshur.

Well, people in Seoul wouldnt want to pay extra either. They got a crapton of MMOs as it is.
I really don't get this. . but I don't live it Europe. . . doesn't it work out to about 18.76 US. . .
That price includes VAT. . how can you discount that. .a tax is a tax. . why should Funcom pay it? I am confused.
The Secret World includes 30 days of free game time. Each additional month has a cost of $14.99 / €14.99 incl. VAT / £12.99 incl. VAT.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
XD, seriously? I need to find that post and add it to my sig.
BOOYAKA!
Now it's a toss up between Dragon and Templars.
lol I know was just making a joke that cooper guy that used to pimp this game was trying to convince me every starting city was exactly how they look in real life.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
I've vacationed in Seoul twice, I want it to make it a yearly summer thing though. However, I don't know if the game could compact the space enough to make it really "Soulful"

lol I think we can pass that off as misinformation.
