My best mmo experience ever was Star Wars Galaxies, back in 2004 I think it was.
Was so much fun, and a proper mmo that had much more things to do after reaching max level on your character. It to me was the best fully living breathing environment ever. It had me paying for over a year because I always had so many goals to do in that game that it never got boring.
PvP'ing in the guild cities in Star Wars Galaxies. After repelling an attack, we would en mass go attack them back at their city (after our scouts told us where they were ofc) and they could go on for hours and were so much fun. Afterwards we would go hang out in a cantina telling all our tales of victory.
Not an MMORPG really but my favorite MUD - Avendar.
Full loot PvP, con-death/dying of old age, completely original, mod enforced RPing - The game evolved substantially from month to month due to shifts in power and characters.
Original EverQuest, up to Planes of Power. I didn't notice at the time but those portals really took a lot out of the game. But yeah, original EverQuest, I didn't just play that game, I lived it. I was unemployed and young, I spent upwards of 8 hours a day on there, almost every day, ended up joining a US based guild that meant I was doing raids up until 6am and later..
Eventually I had to call it a day, the late nights were killing me, I was beginning to forget what daylight looked like. I moved to a UK server without any equipment under the promise that a guild would take me on and start equipping me. When I got there, they changed their mind. So I had a Time flagged 65 Monk with untold AA's with no equipment, no coin, nothing.. so I really called it a day there and hung up my towel.
SWG pre SOE/LA braking it... awesome game, had hours and hours of fun with it and nearly everyone i knew played it even people who didnt usually play computer games..
Then probally Darkfall, my longest played mmorpg for sure the pvp is just awesome and going around the massive world knowing you could get jumped and loose everything is just pure awesome.. need more games like this..

Then all that was taken away with the NGE
I also had some good times in SWG. I remember a few dev events... one where they spawned an AT-AT at the end of a pvp battle and destroyed the rebels.
Then there was the first time I fought a Krayt dragon with a bunch of random dudes. It was fun hunting stuff that was actually challenging, like some of the elite night sisters.. black sun dudes, and geonosis.
Then there was a time I watched a fat headed Jedi who was showing off in a city get owned by a BH. This was before the NGE and CU when there weren't many Jedi around.
I actually kinda miss the game, even though it kinda sucked at times.

LOL Fat headed jedi.
Yeah I think I had a blast around those times too, while juggling COH and DAoC.
When I finaly got my Jedi and went Dark jedi it was great having BH's chase me and get pwned by my lightsaber.
wow is main one had so much fun in the first few years doing the mass pvp on the cross roads when the raids/dungeons were fun
AO doing the the mad dash to TOTW if were poor running trying not to get killed . jumping off s7 with my mp kiteing the hecks till they nerfed the pets endless subway runs that hugh alien ship that would fly over and fill the sky .the sound it would make as went over head . people holding yalm shop open when the cheap one came up
one that just vanished space cowboy i loved that game
Tabula Rasa. I'd spend hours just attacking / defending bases, so much fun. One base in particular had a large tower in it; I'd defend the gates for as long as possible then retreat to the tower and snipe with a rocket launcher. Anything that tried to come up after me got roasted by my propellant gun. Good times.
Plenty of other bases had great choke points set up as well. Made me feel like a badass burning / melting / freezing hordes of baddies. Until I hit one of those annoying damage reflecting enemies and killed myself, anyway.
hmmm. '01-05, roughly. Can't really even narrow it to a single game.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Every thing pre WoW. I started out with Asheron's Call. I thought it was the best thing ever. Then Anarcy Online. Best game ever!! On to DAoC. Woah this game is amazing, no one can out do it! On to FFXI, SWG, then World of Warcraft. Where it has now been a dead halt for a decade.
It is not a case of your first love is always the best game. Every game just kept getting better until the 700lbs gorilla.
I was the best panzer for 4 years, together with the best infantry "Niebler" fuftwaffe "Nacht" 2nd best panzer "Schneider" Sniper "Znats"Best field commander and clan leader "Ramzer" plus the best core of players Von mudra, zender,Erik, etc
Old Screems days, pitty i dint know fraps on that time...the magic is lost in the past
WoW 4ys,EVE 4ys,EU 4ys FH1942 best tanker for 4years Playing WWII OL for some years untill now many other for some months
Lineage2 (the old one obviously before C3 and not NA). A Game where you could do what you wanted. The lack of binding mechanics on gear and the world random drop chances ensured i could advance by doing whatever i liked.
No "Daily" quest grind, no overcrowded hunting grounds for the dailies. No lockout because i couldn't "raid" this weekend. I might as well spend monday 4 hours grinding and got even better loot, (or money to buy gear).
It may was a "grinder" but had no grind, because no second was lost. No artifical gates, no timesinks for the sake of it, no dump "IDs" no faction reputation.
PVP happened because it had clear rules and a price. Gankers payed a price, war had a price and a sweet victory boon.
A World, my time, my freedom, FUN, in fact if there was a classic server run by decent guys (not ncwest) i would drop TSW, GW2 immediately and play again
My Gear, earned by me, free to sell, gear a twink. My Time spend. Not artifically "bound" because some etilist prick could get butthurt about the fact that my twink didn't rerun a certain dungeon for wearing an Armor which i earned one way or another already.
Definitely the first weeks in DAOC, it was my first experience with an mmo (actually ragnarok online, but it was for such a short amount time that it doesn't count). I remember the music at the login screen as i proudly selected Midgard as my realm and created a norse warrior. I remember being so confused of what to do, the first hours i where just walking around in Jordheim being lost but eventually i found some mobs i could kill. As i where grinding about (probably looking like an idiot while trying to strafe around the mobs, witch in DAOC makes you miss the mob) a max-leveled guy walked up to me giving me a lot of hints and tips for the game, and some nice armor for me to level up in.
That is one of my strongest memories in an mmo, all i have played online before that was starcraft and quake. I really enjoyed the great and helpful community in that game, and it will probably be the best game I've ever played.
Originally posted by XAPGames Vanilla / BC WoW. Great guild, cool people, fun dungeon runs and helping in-guild lowbies learn the game. About 1/4 of the guild was IRL friends. Most of us were only on our first or second toons, so gameplay was still fresh.
I'm going to use your arnswer as mine as well.
I'm going to third that response.

The Realm Online beta scamming people looking for golden pants with their horrible trading system was the funnest time i've ever had in an MMO.
EQ + Kunark expansion
DAoC pre Atlantis
Vanilla WoW
GW2 BWE
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Vanguard.
Sadly there are just not enough players if you play from europe.
Probably GW1 atm. Was the best fun running shiverpeak zones and doing chest runs in FoW.
Also i would rate Darkfall up there. Had a sweet time back on EU server in the intial year of release.

SWG - Pretty much everything.
I wish I had appreciated/played it more.
AC, DAOC and Lotro.
