I am a busy adult, and I concur.  This game works great for me.

My friends are busy adults.  YaY we can all play with each other even though we level at different speeds!

    GW2 is happy.

Looking for a guild? I'm putting on together on Ehmry Bay for older gamers. Check it out: http://tcbgw2.enjin.com/recruitment

which is a big reason why mmos suck these days.

Hardcore = paying a monthly fee to do very little actual content, over and over again.

so happy to see so many people in the same situation as me, makes me not feel so bad for visiting a gaming forum :)

But yes, thank you guild wars 2, now i don't have to schedule 3-4 hours couple of times a week playing the same content over and over just so I can "show off" in orgrimmar and have them replaced as soon as expansion comes out.

If GW2 succeeds well enough, it will revilitize the industry in that the message will be that success comes from trying to differentiate from WoW rather than copying it.  A good sandbox MMO is just a matter of time once that message gets sent.

Of course, in a more cynical light, it could just result in dumber developers making GW2 clones that are extremely shoddy and not learning a thing.

I totally agree with the article. As a father of two and having a full time job I sure don't need second job in a game that was supposed to entertain me. It's just what the doctor ordered for busy responsible adults who just like to game a few hours a day.

If the average gamer is indeed 37 years old then GW2 should be a tremendous succes really. As long as players spread the word.

Easy accessability is a sign of shallowness in a game, not something to shout about. Not playing yet so can't comment on the game to any extent, but easymode gameplay and depth of gameplay do not go together.

    Nonsense.

    - the game is accessible.  Jump in, play.  Spend 10 minute blocks playing if you want.

That statement has nothing to do with 'easymode' or 'depth'.

    - spending 16 hours camping a tiny tower in the middle of nowhere waiting for a mob to spawn is not 'hardmode' or 'deep'.  "Hardcore" is the term usually associated with it, along with "horribly outdated design".

    ----

A good description for a successful game is 'easy to play, hard to master'.  Aka accessible, but deep.

So no raid and no subscription automatically equal easy mode now?

This is not about subs, raids or for that matter GW2. It is a general principle in gaming that the easier a game is to get into the shallower the game play will be. Early investment of your time yields new and rewarding game play.

Looking at MMO’s if you can do a quest in 5 minutes it probably is not going to be as interesting as one that takes 15. If you can craft something in 15 seconds it probably is not going to be as useful to you or as interesting to create as something that takes 5 minutes. We are not talking about less grind here, we are talking about a lowering of the bar to achieve objectives. But I do realise some of you will mistakenly think of this as less grind.

The ability to jump in and not need to spend much time to do something in a MMO indicates a MMO based on easymode principles. As I said I have not played the GW2 myself, I am simply questioning the OP’s assumption. For a MMO to have depth, an epic feel and to be a MMO you want to play long term, you do not want gameplay you can pick up and put down at a moments notice.

You are confusing time wasted with complexity.

It's typical from people who have only ever known the EQ/WoW clone type MMORPG model. They confused tedium with difficulty and complexity.

Being able to log in for 30 minutes and progress doesn't mean the final goal is easy to achieve, it only means that it doesn't require you to spend 4+ hours in each play session to work towards it.

So in order for an MMO to have depth one must sacrtifice countless of hours then by your philosophy?  Utter nonesense.  The ability to pick up a game at a moments notice, jump in, and enjoy it makes a game have depth.  If there is no depth then the game will not be enjoyable and will feel shallow like, imo, WoW or Rift or SWTOR.  People like you, based off your post, think that depth must  equates to a grindy time sink process like the gear treadmill is ludercous.  And really how does being able to jump into something equate to lowering the achievement bar?  Not like that achivement bars are high at all in MMOs you would consider to have dpeth.  There are options for different playstyles, but first and foremost a game should simpely be fun.

My WoW guild had only adults, most with family and kids, yet we were server first guild for a long while.

Generalizations are always bad. Being a "busy adult" and a gamer is not incompatible.

Simply taking longer to do something in a MMO does not indicate better play. But if you are taking less time, then there is less time for good game play to develop. Complexity is what I am talking about and it is harder to give gameplay any complexity if it is made to be picked up and put down at a moments notice.

I am not saying everything you do in a MMO has to take a long time or that short time events cannot be fun or have some innovation. But by definition complexity and depth take more time. If you have been playing for a few years and cannot see that I can only assume your GW2 loyalty is talking, which is fine, you have every right to support the game. As I said I have not played the game so cannot comment on how casual friendly it is, but casual and richness of gameplay simply do not go together.

One example, Angry Birds is casual and fun. EvE is not, it takes time to work out what the hell is going on, then you have your fun. Hopefully that shows you how casual and depth of gameplay do not go together.
