The Burning Crusade expansion is already bundled with vanilla even though I still see it in stores. So the battle chest is kind of redundant as well. Imo, they should bundle/include everything already released when they come out with a new one though.
from wikipedia : "On June 28, 2011, The Burning Crusade was automatically applied to all previous Warcraft accounts, and all new Warcraft accounts created in the future will have The Burning Crusade applied at no additional cost. All The Burning Crusade content is now effectively part of the original game.[69]"

This week only, you can get the World of Warcraft Battle Chest for $5, Wrath of the Lich King for $5, and Cataclysm for $10 when you buy directly from Blizzard.
That’s 75% off the regular prices, making this a great time to set yourself up for the imminent launch of Mists of Pandaria… or to invite a friend to join you in Azeroth.
Hurry, this offer ends August 27, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

That's pretty smart. That's normally an $80 purchase. If people have friends that are 'on the fence' about WoW, this would certainly be a deal to help push them over.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

If they sit by idly, they risk losing players, and, consequently, money.
I agree it is smart which is why I said "strategically timed". [mod edit]
I remember Blizzard making the game cheap for holidays and when expansions come out. I think they know GW2 is a contender, but Blizz always does this. I would expect any game with multiple expansions to make them cheap for holidays and new expansion releases.
Dear Lord that is painfully obvious! Blizzard is showing no attempt to hide it.
Should be renamed to "Hurry up and buy our older content before Guild Wars 2 is launched" sale.
Marketing 101. You would have done exactly the same, if it was your company.
Btw, this is far from the first time they do this. I bought 2 sets of all expansions about half a year ago, when they had a similar campaign. But I do agree with some posters: everything pre-MoP should be bundled. But it woldn't surprise me if they add WotLK to the Battle Chest after MoP is released.
What a weak attempt to get new players into playing WoW. If you're looking for a new mmo, why start with WoW? The game is ancient and has dissapointed the Vanilla players over and over again with every expantion since WotLK. It used to be hard and a real challenge. Now you just get spoonfed and every 6 year old can clear the end-game content.
I have to say that I havn't played the new expantion beta so I don't know how that's gonna be like, but still.. I can't imagine the game ever being the same again as it was when it just got released. If people havn't played WoW in all the years it has been out right now, why start at the beginning of an end.
I used to be a WoW player, but this game has no chance of ever getting me back to it again. I hated Guild Wars 1 but now I've played 2 for a couple of hours at the stress test and I had more fun playing those couple of hours than I ever had in WoW. It's not a hard game, but it's dynamic and live events pop up wherever you go. You can adapt your char to whatever playing style you like, and change it on the spot. You're not stuck with the same skill rotation for the rest of your miserable life in Azeroth untill you get a handfull of new skills whenever a new expansion comes out.

That's pretty similar to what they had for Cat.
I only had vanilla WoW, and got all the Xpacs including Cat for well under 50 bucks.

WOW Patch 5.0.4 is primarily an unlock of the races, not necessarily new playable content.
The 75% off sale runs until Monday, August 27th for an expansion that releases on September 25th.
This isn't Marketing 101, as this kind of stuff would scare the crap out of most people new to marketing.
My take is that this is very likely a two-pronged approach. Choke out a major NAP (specifically US West coast) to damage performance during GW2's first day player experience, and get people to spend just enough above the price point for a game to trigger buyer remorse for that moment a few days later when the crowd that did not preorder is getting ready to buy GW2.
If I'm correct, this is brilliance on Blizzard's part. Pretty douchey, but brilliant.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Good deal, but I'm too much of a casual player now to play two games at once or pay for a subscription that I will probably barely use. Maybe if it had 3 months subscription I'd get it.
Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.

Very interesting opinion.
[mod edit] they did this exact same thing before Cat and Wrath, plus have put in sales for the expansions recently.
Added onto that the Battlechest, which as existed since Warcraft II....

It is only a 'Weak attempt' if no-one actually buys it, i suppose we will have to wait and see.
As for the rest of the paragraph, well i am a vanilla player and i still play with no regret at all and have enjoyed each expansion that has been released. Was each expansion perfect and did i like everything, well no of course not but no game is going to please every player no matter what they do.
One thing that Blizzard are addressing in this release is the 'difficulty' factor that so many complain about in the form of challenge mode dungeons using normalized gear so that you can't just bowl in it top raiding gear and wipe the board with record times as well as world bosses for you to get your own groups together and take these on.
That being said, some will always see vanilla through the rose tinted glasses and not move on from that, which is fine as you can't please everyone as i said earlier, but cliche 'kiddy' quotes all the time doesn't change that fact that there are still a lot of people who enjoy the game as it is now.
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Its a good deal for those that havn't ever played WoW or have never invested in certain expansion packs . But if you add MOP to it if your a new player your playing close to 50 dollars which is a similar price as GW2 which has no subs . It is either a smart or cynical move by Blizzard depending on how you look at it because it is designed to go up against the GW2 launch .
Guild Wars 2 has spoilt WoW for me I won't be staying after this my last final month is up but I'm a gamer that likes his world pvp . WoW lost most of that several years ago when it made porting to dungeons and battlegrounds possible . I guess it depends what you like . WoW these days seems to me to mostly a pve/raid based game where as GW2 is a pvp/quest/dynamic event based game . Depends what you enjoy really .
I think Blizzard is wise to be concerned about the impact GW2 will have and try and limit it by this move . I'm not sure how affective it will be though . GW2 and WoW can easily exist side by side but I think we will see more buy to play games in the future and this will inevitably hit subscriptions to WoW ( and every other sub and freemium mmo for that matter ) . The loses they could face in the coming year could potentially be devestating . WoW is in a far better position to ride such a market shift . Personally though I think the controverisial MoP is an ill concieved expansion pack and will drive away more people than it attracts . I like Pandas as much as the next person but I don't really want to see them hopping about in a fantasy world as a playable race .

You can try to write it off as desperate as you want, but the fact is that for the 20 bucks/euros it's a fuckload of content for a new player.

EU prices:
Btw, this is a slightly better deal in the US than in the EU. Here, discount varies from appx 60 to 75%.
