I like the game because of the Final Fantasy aesthetic they've captured and the promise of getting to play Final Fantasy themed jobs. Also, I have an immense soft spot for Final Fantasy XI as it was my first MMO and I'd be lying if I said that nostalgia wasn't a huge factor.

If there is nothing but a gear grind waiting for me at endgame, which I can participate in a month after release, I won't be too happy, but we shall see about that.

    Sad face.

Nope not a troll post.  I tried it, didn't like it.  Like all Asian themed MMO's I've tried I am not into the their version of fantasy.  It doesn't mean its bad it just means its not for me.  I prefer the dark gritty world of European/Western fantasy.  I prefer my atmosphere to be more akin to Rift, Neverwinter, Everquest or Asheron's Call.

I also dislike slow paced combat, now I only got to level 7 but I still feel the game is not going to speed up at all, I just prefer the more action type combat associated with games like Neverwinter, Tera or Elder Scrolls but everyone has their own opinion and I am entitled to mine, doesn't make it right for you but thought I'd share mine since this is by-product of a forum.  Good luck to those who stick with the game, I'm sure it will do fine. However It isn't for me.  I'll be waiting for something else to come along to suit my tastes.

It's not for you, and that's fine, seriously. No one should hate on people for having an opinion.

The game does however get faster paced. You get more abilities to use inbetween your weaponskill cool downs. The GCD doesn't affect abilities like it does weaponskills anymore, you also get gear, food, spells, and effects that increase spell and skill speed (faster animations and shorter ws cd's). At level 7 however, you probably had 3 skills; meaning I can't fault you for disliking it up to that point.

And for everyone saying it's tab, target, 1-2-3-4-5. You're just plain wrong. At least the OP admits he didn't play that far into it. He's saying he dislikes it for his own reasons, which is absolutely okay. But to say that it's as easy as 1-2-3-4-5 repeat, you clearly do not know that of which you speak.

Actually given the fact that there are both food buffs as well as armor stats with "skill speed" and "spell speed" I'm pretty confident it'll speed up considerably the higher you get. That is unless these stats don't do at all what I expect them to. Now obviously none of this will ever change the game into "action combat" but it's been pretty clear for anyone that even remotely followed this game that it was going to be a "tab target game".

Edit: Seems someone beat me to it. image

Well, thanks for being honest with that.  It's something I suspected in my original post asking about level 5 and 10 quests.  If you don't enjoy Final Fantasy, then there really is no point in going further.  Though I would say that by the time you unlock the airship pass and the armory system and the levelquests/behests/dungeons/chocobos/chocobo companions etc. the game really shows it's soul.  That's up to around level 15.  I'd also say when Advanced Jobs enters the game really explodes with grouping possibilities to supplement the require grouping on 15+ storyline quests.

There have been studies that most people judge a game before level ten, regardless of what it is (WoW even cited such sources as the main reason they revamped starting areas in Cataclysm).  It's a definite weakness of FFXIV, and if one isn't a huge Final Fantasy fan they might not make it past level 10 to see what lies beyond.  Sadly they had to make it as it was due to so many new players to MMOs that will start with the PS3.  But they have gone strides in making it more appealing once the storyline picks up and you beat your first major villain.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Isn't it every 2.5 seconds?  Those that are further along, do classes have abilities that aren't impacted by the global cooldown? 2.5 seconds for a global cooldown on a tab target game feels really long.

I to tried the game and did not like it....My brother is a FF fanboy and has tried to get me to like it, and I did try to like it...but I just can't.

The combat is S L O W....there is NO arguing that...It may not bother you but you can't argue it.

The Asian style art is not for me. I to like darker, grittier styles....

The Lighting effects, spell effects, and sound effects are way to over the top for my taste...why does every attack sound like I'm attacking a sink full of dishes with a mace made of wind chimes? and Why even on a monk class where my abilities are martial in nature do I have to have crazy sparkle explosions every time I throw a punch.

Dude, stop being a drunken idiot and come back when you're sober. Who cares how he counts his reasons? You would get what he is saying if you weren't so fixated on something so completely irrelevant and ridiculous.

Anyways, just sounds like the game isn't for you Azza. No harm in that. I didn't like FFXI for much of the same reasons, but I'm strangely finding FFXIV to be a lot more entertaining so far. I like most of the Final Fantasy games though, and don't see anything wrong with Asian-style MMOs either. It's definitely not a game or a series for everyone.

Won't even go into future combat, systems and coordination / preparation / combos / armory system (to mix it up further) that are also time dependent with MP / TP management and restoration techniques.

Though what you described is video gaming in general.  What is a hack and slash game (or mmo) that isn't just Left Mouse to attack, left mouse to attack, left mouse to attack.  Or a console game that isn't, mash "A, A, A, A, A"?   The difference is management, group coordination, attacks, preparation and the systems whereby they place you in to employ these tactics (different situations and conditions and locations).

Those who usually just mention "12345" actually don't realize that is with every game.  Most even less involved than that.  A great deal not even having the additions mentioned above.  Sounds to me like such a person is just tired of gaming or has outgrown it in general.

    :)

You're right, aside from the Monster Hunter games, the combat for most of the games I've enjoyed playing in the last few years involved mostly pressing the right trigger on my controller but that's only if you discount using the left and right analog sticks to aim, dodge, and find cover.

The thing with this game though, is that I don't have to worry about positioning. I don't have to worry about trying to dodge an attack or get out of range. I don't have to worry about line of sight or where my enemy is. I don't have to worry about anything other than casting blizzard over and over and over again. The combat comes down to stats and stats alone. Some people like that, but I'm not one of them. I won't say "change the game for me," but I would love if more MMOs moved away from the Everquest mould and more towards Eve with Red Faction: Guerilla or Space-Flight sim controlls (depending on setting).

I love enviroment and theme, it's so typical for japanese games and I love it. I like the game, but I agree, combat sux. Global cooldowns are killing me and I'm so freakin dissapointed in combat.

Well, it's always interesting to see what people's preferences are. My opinion is that FF14 trounces Neverwinter.

As far as your first dislike: you dislike Asian themed games but you played one. That you knew was a japanese game. I don't ever like peas. Ever. But you never find me eating something I know has peas and then complaining it has peas.

Tab targeting? they never said it was anything other than tab targetting and I highly doubt you read info that led you to believe it was anything but tab targetting. So why play something you don't like?

Why do players set themselves up only to knowingly dislike a game?

Well, I could make a guess but it's not nice.

In later lvl's you can get gear that reduce the GCD.

Does anyone know how well it will scale at level 50? It seems dumb to itemize it. If the intent is to have a lower GCD, then just make the damn GCD lower. Why does SE always have to do things the complicated way?

Because prior to GW2 there was no Triple-A title that used an action type combat where positioning mattered.  Hence the reason why I find great enjoyment in this new fangled MMO experiment and sadly something I don't see me giving up any time soon.  Luckily the Action Combat mechanic is going to thrive with games like Wildstar and TESO.  Whether I play those or not remains to be seen, only a romp through a beta will tell me.  Much like this romp through FFXIV told me I won't be playing it.

maybe its the silence? when interacting with npc , wont even say cliche well hello there or something just pops up a bubble what you then need to skip away.

i have been trying it aswell now and i still dont know if i like FF serie as MMO. i really liked ff8 played it alot back in the days but this one.. i already feel like i just let it be and move on. we will see when i got some more time to test it.

A lot of people dont like it. It wont fail as hard as version 1 though, but they wont get the success they want from it. They should listen to the players instead of trying to defend their bad decisions through ethical and emotional arguments.

Boycotting EA. Why? They suck, even moreso since 2008.

I really like the aesthetic. I actually like asian games with their cute rabbits to kill and ligs like that =P But I have a small problem with combat also. yesterday I did 2 dungeons. in both I was basically spamming 1 ability over and over again. Cure since I was a healer. I had to use aoe cure like 3 times. For one I was glad coming back from GW2 how structured the combat was. Everyone had a role and it was easy to see what is going on. On the other hand it actually was quite boring. the real test for me will be the 1st month after release. Will I get bored of the game after few weeks or not...

I'm sure there are people who don't like this game. Some people have higher expectations for the gameplay, and it means a lot to them, and that's okay.

I'm on my 3rd beta weekeend and unfortunatly i find myself playing less and less. Combat is beyond boring and very slow, you pretty much mash the same 2-3 ablities over and over again until the mob dies.
