The main reason I think is because if you want Everquest to be Everquest as you know it, you play EQ1 or EQ2. They currently have no plans to shut down the existing games for EQN, but keep updating them still. If they made it too much like EQ1 /EQ2 then these probably would get shut down. Now EQN will be different enough for people to play both, instead of people migrate from an existing EQ MMO to EQN.

I think EQN will be an awesome MMO to play In its own right on top of EQ2.

Although I think there is a lot more to show of it, so I am not saying it is not Everquest until EQN officially launches

With this game you can not really wait, as you could miss out on a lot - the game will be forever changing.

Two months after launch you could be getting more whiners saying that events and locations at the start of the game, which is now all destroyed and gone, was better than what we have now, but then 2 months later there could be better events and locations.

This game is going to have its ups and downs, and what was around yesterday will not be the case for today / tomorrow.

After watching the panels there's one thing that I found funny in a sad way.

The only times applause was given was when the SOE people asked for it.

How the hell are EQ and EQ2s graphics NOT cartoony?!?

I can understand not wanting action style combat...but cartoony?!?

This is the biggest disappointment about this game, most of us were expecting an EQ evolution, what we got instead is a GW2 evolution.

Someone said it already, EQNext officially started the GW2 cloning era, and in my view that's quite sad.

I really don't understand why SOE had to use the Everquest brand for this game (SoE is not the only one abusing IPs, same thing goes for ESO which doesn't feel like TES)

There are few things that make this game NOT an Everquest game in my opinion.

I think we need to understand this is NOT a reboot of anything in the EverQuest series. This is an entirely new game aimed at totally shifting the paradigm of today's gaming but which still bears many resemblances to earlier EQs. The freedom to be completely different is in fact accounted for by the lore, which posits that Norrath exist in a different plane. The sooner people come to terms with this the better off they'll be. Even before release several were saying not to expect an EQ Sequel or prequel but to have an open mind and consider it a new game.

It sounds like everyone will go hybrid therefore there will be no tactics involved in combat, everyone will think about themselves which means DPSing the Target to death while trying to stay alive, just like in GW2.

The trinity will be there but just by name (even Arenanet said there was a Trinity in GW2 lol), in fact there will be no Trinity system operating on the battlefield.

My interpretation of the multiclassing aspect is that you commence the game with a certain class only as a rough starting point and then throughout the game you can evolve and morph that class entirely. Basically what that means is you can determine the role you want to be as you are playing; you don't have to decide right of the bat. Yes, they did indicate that you can create a build that does everything you need. But there's also nothing precluding you from specializing your class to healing abilities, or tanking abilities, or DPS.

So if people want to group up as a sort of holy trinity system because they find it more effective in battle then fine, there is nothing preventing that sort of arrangement from happening. The overarching theme here is that you end up playing the way want to play, and that holy trinity arrangements can still naturally form even in the absence of any special implementation or encouragement by the devs. This is the way it is in EQN and the way it is in several other MMOs as well.

Yes, as far as we heard there is no formal large-grouping system for content. But they have stated that there will be much content that is not soloable, so people will end up grouping out of necessity. Dungeons, dynamic events, rallying calls- you will see grouping in all that stuff. So I wouldn't worry about it too much. And if you think about it, raiding is more of a themepark quality anyway- where the game basically formally groups people up and directs them in a linear fashion to some boss to defeat. This is at odds with a sandbox theme where players are empowered to do want they want in the world and roam around as they please to encounter content themselves.

I'll give you that. Firiona Vie certainly has less elegance and classiness, which ties in with the choice of art style.

And if the cartoonish art-style is justified by the need to make obvious the character facial expression, then I will break it to you David (Georgeson)............. No, we didn't need the facial expressions, that's for kids...........I am sure they will love it.

I agree. Personally I'm not a fan of the cartoony and stylized look, and I'm not sure why they decided not to cater to a more mature audience. But taking the devil's advocate position, EQN is a groundbreaking achievement in the gaming industry; there are just too many new and cool things to fixate on one aspect of the game. The gameplay we can envision is just leaps and bounds better, funner, more exciting, more captivating, and more technological than anything else that's out there.

Also, look at how successful some games were like Minecraft with its 8-bit graphics from the 90's, Runescape with its cartoon-like characters, and even WoW with its overdone fantasy theme. This makes you wonder how important realistic graphics actually are.

I agree with all this. I happen to like the horizontal progression which is next-gen and sandbox style. One thing is for sure- this is not your typical, traditional, run-of-the-mill MMO. Ultimately I think EQN will soar to the top but we shall have to see...

I'm looking forward to never rolling alts

    People seems to be confused.

Your BASE class controls what armor you can wear.  Your BASE class controls what weapon(s) you can wield.  Your BASE class controls what weapon abilities you have (based on the weapon you are holding).  Your BASE class controls the character ability types (Movement, Offensive, Defensive and Utility or other combination of those four)

Your unlocked classes give you the ability to change out the character abilities.

So you can build a Warrior BASE class that wears plate armor, wields a two handed sword and casts fireball because he has also unlocked the class that has the fireball character skill.

In the Class Panel they built a Mage killing Warrior (Magebane)

They didn't really address how you switch out your BASE class.

If you want classes make your character   use mainly healing  skills from the different  healing classes or  who knows maybe there will be some bonuses or  reason to create a pure class. its so early theres really not enough infomation out to call it a clone of anything. Plus GW2 had no real  healing class everyone got  a small simple heal..... if I remember correctly.

people are so quick to call someone a clone or copy cat. And all it takes is for  one feature to be  reused.

By the way only 20% of people thinks EQNext looks like an Everquest game.

Not looking good for SoE, which can't rely on Everquest fans as its rock solid player base.

Now they really need to make something special to attract regular customers............good luck.

On paper they have good ideas, but we all know that not everything that looks good on paper is translated well in reality.

20% of people that are registered on this forum, that are interested in eqn and that bothered to vote on your ridiculous pool. If you think something doesn't look good for a huge company,  because a bunch of frustrated people from forums say so you are way to far in your own world.

Don't treat this place as a whole world or any reliable source of statistics at all, this is a hangout spot for a specific minority. Be smarter than that, no matter how much you complain about it, there are hundreds or maybe millions of players that won't ever bother to post in any forums and will enjoy such fresh and innovative game as this one.

And how can you even make any critisism, when so little was shown.

They gave you a tech demo with some random terrain, without monster AI, and with few example skills, in some pre alpha environment, said few things about their ideas, and you critisize that? It's like complaining a car is not running, because it is still in factory... They should make those meetings private, only for people who understand what they are for. You obviously didn't understand what was going on over there.

Some people really need to get over the fact, that another game is not going by their extremely personal expectations.

it's interesting that the same ppl are championing trinity combat.. its so boring and predictable... there is no real essence to it... every encounter plays out basically the same.. with gimmicks like ppl here so like to say... whats fun about doing the same thing in every dungeon... each encounter playing out almost the exact same way?

lol like the freerealms next comment. EQnext doesn't look or sound like EQ at all but, if they are trying to create a game world that we get to shape and have input on, I'm will to give it a shot. I have heard these promises before though so I am very skeptical to believe SOE.

I think that the person who is taking it a tiny bit too seriously is you to be honest..............

I am not angry or anything, I was just giving my impression on what they shown and what they said so far.

My conclusion is that so far this game has little to do with Everquest except for the name itself (and most of the users on this forums agree with me apparently).

I might change my mind when more info will come my way, this is my first impression view after all.

I said it was my opinion, I said that it was too early to make a final judgement, and I said that I will try the game because of its innovative features, doesn't look like an angry person behaviour to me (bit disappointed yes).

The thread wasn't about telling if the game was good or not, but if EQ fans liked it or not.

Learn to understand what the thread is about, before deploying you angry attitude please.

If EQN has combat with many many many abilities and I can use any 8 that I want then I will be less put off. However if it is like like GW2 where you learn all of your main abilities by level 10 then I be very disappointed.

Why do you assume the more skills the better? I know tons of games, with entire game window filled with unnecessary skill bars, that bring nothing interesting to the game, only boring additional work in game and cover the screen. And there are so many games with simple mechanics that can be fun for many years. It all depends on execution. How can you assume the more the better......
