Honestly way to late with the boombox. Asura have been break dancing since launch to what a bell, flute, classical music. I say about time and predict cardboard floor tiles next. :)

Instead of boomboxes, they could have added "Ancient Oakheart's Leg" and it could be a flute that you play (and it could play the same music as the boombox does). Why does "funny" have to mean "hey look, it's just like something from the regular world!"

    Asura iPhone 5s coming soon.

Like I said before, "ancient oakheart's leg" why not a boombox I don't see the problem?

Ancient oakheart leg is only funny for ppl whos dream is to be aragon in lord of the rings, thats why stuff from the real world is more fun for us normal ppl who doesn't have a "magic wand" on the wall in the living room at home.

I think the issue is more far reaching than the boombox breaking immersion. I think the Asura themselves are incongruent with the fantasy world originally presented with GW1. They feel like an attempt to duplicate Warcraft gnomes:

    • Smart
    • Dimunitve
    • 'Cutesy'
    • Inventors
    • Underground Dwellers
    • Forced out of their ancient home by a big bad evil guy
    • Use of inventions for comic relief
I'll give them that they're not catastrophically stupid about what they invent, but the core of their design feels to me to be heavily influenced by that gnomish lore from WoW.

I don't think original post, at it's soul, was really about the boombox itself. The boombox, rather, is a symptom of a greater immersion issue that the OP sees the GW2 universe suffering from based on his adoration of the original GW lore.

I'm pretty normal. I'm not entirely sure what is funny about a boombox, or a plushie backpack, or most of the stuff they add in that vein.

Is it funny because you find anachronism funny? Afterall the entire series Life on Mars is built around that one gimmick, Martin Lawrence in the terrible Black Knight movie along with many others.

"Isn't it funny because it doesn't belong in this time or place? haha right? funny? Did you get the joke?" That joke is funny occasionally, and moreso the first few times you see it. But eventually, it's just a worth a shoulder shrug.

It is interesting to see how this game really turns some people into sad pandas.   I didn't think the fad of hating on this game would last as long as it has.  I wonder if FF(whatevernumber) will have the same type of forum silliness in the long run, or if it's just a phenomena that was formerly associated with WoW and now GW2?  Things that make you go, "hmmmmm".

Maybe its because Anet has a chip on their shoulder with something to prove. They have stated as such. They want to beat WoW. They bad talk other mmos that have game systems they dont like. That attitude trickles down into their fanbase. And you know how much people like to put those types of people in their place. I do not think it is deserved, but it is a ripe venue for baiting and trolling.

I am not saying there have to be boomboxes all the time or that you can drive a car in GW2 but somethings occasionally is something new and more fun. No I didn't get the Joke cause I don't watch the show and I never liked Martin Lawrence either.

But my hats of to you cause you seem like a Trekkie with your costume on all time, even when you go to the unemployment agency to search for a roll in Hobbit 3. So try to wave your magic wand and maybe the guys from Anet will listen to you and make a game like everyone else instead. So wave your "precious" and lets see what happends.

A lot of their interviews and the manifesto video talk about what they think is wrong with mmos and how they arent doing that with their mmo. I'm not going to get into a back n forth with you. I don't really care either way. I was just offering up a maybe this is why based on some possible perceptions.

Thank you. You found a way to articulate why I was not pleased with seeing the boombox in GW2.

You see for me, and only me I am speaking for here, the Asura already have way too many things, gadgets, items, and tech that resembles real life. I don't want to see the Devs make that list any longer. (Whether anyone thinks it's healthy or not I play MMOs to escape from real life, not emulate it).

I want to see the Devs spend more time on expanding WvWvW with bigger maps, and/or more maps, better performance while there, better balance, etc, as well as adding more to PvE and dungeon content as well. That sort of thing.

If other Players like and appreciate the boombox, then cool. I have no quarrel with that.

  • rojoArcueidrojoArcueid Member EpicPosts: 10,722

you know, MMORPGs that have an instanced personal main story line (like GW2, SWTOR, etc) should keep the immersion within that main storyline (thats why they do this separate story content, to immerse you in it the story). Out in the persistent world there shouldnt be limitations based on "immersion". The moment you have another player next to you talking trash, spamming jumps and attacking nothing, that moment you realize you dont need forced immersion outside of the main storyline.

I love being immersed in the main story of the game, but when im not focused on it i want as much freedom as i can possibly get, fun stuff, crazy content, whatever. I love the things ArenaNet are adding to the game, but any limitation they add due to immersion breaking should be reconsidered and put in the game.

GW2 is my favorite mmo since it launched. But i am not blind, i hope they fix anything wrong with it and add more long term content as well.

Best post on this thread, hands down.  People should stop getting mad about immersion; there's already like ten different image macros making fun of gamers that complain about it.

After your numerous posts in the FF14:ARR bashing the game I think that GW2 players also sit in forums waiting to unleash their hate.

Before GW2 was released people say that WoW was a horrible game because of the immersion breaking additions like motorcycles, but after GW2 was released immersion doesnt matter and its all for fun.

    Amazing how the times change.

a music box breaks your immersion but not having players with completely trash and ridiculous names?

    You have selective immersion sir.

Considering its 8bit I don't mind the boombox so much, and Super Adventure Box in general is tons of fun. That being said I have long grown bored of GW2 in general and only use it as a chat room anymore when I want to get a hold of and say hey to some people that still play lol.

You can turn off the player-instrument sounds.  Then just assume anybody holding a boombox is carrying some sort of mysterious asuran invention.  Maybe a battery for a golem.  :3

    Mmm, no.

Warcraft gnomes are copied from the Arenanet writer, not the other way around.

You just have the order of who copied who a little bit backwards. :)
