The reason I think FFXIV is going to fail: Staying power

I don't know about staying power, but I have just started and it is the first mmo world I have actually been excited to be in, in a long, long time.

In fact I feel about this the game the way I had hoped to feel about GW2 before I realised fairly quickly that it had become a jack-of-all, master-of-none and lost a lot of the magic and immersion from the original in the process.

So I've taken my money and gone to Wakfu ;). Good lucky to all of those who are still progressing through the game.
Hehe wow that is interesting. Just goes to show how varied our tastes and expectations are from game to game and even with the same game.
I'm not like a lot of other MMO gamers it seems. I personally like the perpetual grind and high level caps that are in older MMOs and Korean MMOs. They allow for a long term character development. Someone could argue that there are many other classes to level through but unfortunately I've done most of it already. Leveled my White Mage, all crafting/gathering professions, a Warrior, and a Bard.

Yeah I play combat classes when I'm taking a break from crafting or gathering. So my approach to this game is way different from yours. That's pretty cool actually. I like when mmos can do that.

Avoid the coil or you will be bored for the next 3 months .

I don't think that's entirely true. Treat it like you go out to eat at a restaurant; let's say it's a negative experience.

    - You arrive at the restaurant and they're slow to seat you.

    - Upon being seated, no one serves you for 20 minutes, not even for water

    - You order an appetizer, and it comes out cold, and after a half an hour

    - You order an entree, and then it arrives but it's just very plain and average in taste

    - Throughout the meal, you receive no real service of any kind

    - You decide not to get dessert

That's kinda how FFXIV is, in a way. If you play through almost the entire game, and you're dissatisfied, you're dissatisfied. You've played enough of it to know what it's about. Having 1 instance that you haven't done =/= not being able to form a valid opinion about the rest of the game. Sometimes, you don't need dessert to know about what's on the menu.

I can somewhat understand where you're coming at with this analogy. If someone's able to complete all the content they have to offer before the 2.1 release then there's really isn't any progression for them other than alts and crafts. I believe it's not until 2.2 and/or 2.3 when they'll finally release more end game progression for those who've already slain Twintania.

They'll have housing and PvP which are going to be nice fresh additions to the game. However, I personally can't justify spending another $15.00. I personally believe that they've taken the wrong stance as to how they're going to roll out content patches due to the fact that they've left a good chunk of players now with very little to look forward to.

It's just cause they couldnt get crystal tower out at launch. I believe if CT was ready at launch, they would have been able to have the next 5 turns of coil out in 2.1. But  CT got pushed back, and so to did the next 5 turns(along with housing, and a bunch of things really).

My problem with this game was combat.  Got really tired, really fast, of the animation lock, 2.5 sec GCD, still getting hit by aoe's even when outside of the area marked.  And don't get me started on my attempts to acually tank.  One taunt between 2 classes on a 2 min CD?  Are you kidding me?  So yeah I stopped playing, just felt backwards, and unintuitive.

"I think this game lacks longevity and here's why...."

    "Yep, I still think that..."

Seems pointless to me. Unless you enjoy being negative. Why would you want to rehash negativity?

There are tons of these people it seems on the MMORPG forums in general. I don't get it either.

    Well, consider it this way...

When a game first launches, and people are making their predictions, or offering their opinions on its longevity, etc.. they're often told "it's too soon to say... come back in a couple months and see how it's doing then".

In this case, the person very well could have been doing just that. Of course, that only brings in a new wave of backlash (often from the very same people who suggested waiting in the first place).

It's one of those catch-22s that people play on forums like these, where the goal-post is forever moving.

As an analogy.. it's like how people are criticized for not doing a search for a specific topic before starting a new thread about it because other similar topics already exist. Yet, if someone does a search, finds the same topic covered in an existing thread, and posts to that instead of starting a new one - they're then criticized for "necro-posting". Again, catch-22. You can't win.

Bottom line is, the people who don't want to read or consider any opinion they don't agree with will always try and find some way to disqualify, dismiss or otherwise silence an opposing view. Sad, but true.

Cymdai, you hit spot on on alot of issues.

Specially regarding crafting, but that is an issue in ALL games out there.

Crafting is a time/money sink throughout the game, where you spend ALOT more than you earn, on the expectation that it'll be awesome at end-game.

Except everyone is doing the same you are.

WoW alleviates this by restricting a character to 2 professions.

FFXIV shoots itself in the foot by allowing a character to have all classes and professions - essentially adding an "expiration date" to its crafting system.

And, just like in WoW, Crafting in end-game isn't useful for the gear, but for the services/consumables.

Now, if somehow you couldn't be the best in everything, and crafting gear could actually match the best in the game, there might be some hope.

The rest of the game shares similar design flaws.

I commend all of you who read this from top to bottom; the thread has gotten pretty large now, but I feel like a lot of the information stated is still a factor.

I do think this will be a HUGE month for this game though. 2.1 is, in my opinion, going to have a significant impact on this game's population, for better or for worse. We'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

Plus there are plenty of folks that don't even craft so there will always be work for crafters in this game. Yes. Crafting in this game will always be about services/consumables mainly, but you forget, unlike WoW, there's a big market for housing coming up, not to mention materia. In addition, they are also planning on implementing the crafting of airships later on.

Maybe I didn't explain myself well.

I'm not against having the ability to be all classes and professions.

I'm just saying SE failed to deal with its consequences, and now it's one of the issues leading the game to ruin.

They had great overall "base ideas", but they failed to implement them properly - instead of systems that complement each other, they designed systems that work against each other.

Frankly the only issue with crafting is that people who fail in it come up with excuses why it must be the game's fault that it happened.

I'm breaking even from 1-15, then making constant profit on every single craft and gathering profession right up until level 50. Making money on any level is easier than anything I've ever experienced and none of my crafting classes are even level 50 yet. Meanwhile I'm watching people with all professions at 50 struggle to make any dough because they just don't have any game. Making it sound like it comes down to the amount of crafting classes you have leveled is pretty damn hilarious.

It's just such a funny thing to say when my experiences have been nothing but the opposite from day one till day 14th of December 2013 regarding crafting and gathering in FFXIV:ARR.

More grim news: player-run economies always have an expiration date. It is SE's obligation to constantly keep the economy from stagnating. This is not a design flaw. This is how player-run economies work. You either put up with it or go NPC-run all the way and forget about it. SE is not about to.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I personally am waiting for the housing bonuses to be particularly ludicrous.

Something along the lines of "+5% exp when leveling", or "+3%HQ rate on items"

God I would laugh so hard :D

That would be for legacy servers. Normal people servers get 20% Drop rate and 15% increase to all attributes.

I played during beta and since launch, and overall it reminds me a lot of SWTOR.  Smallish world, lots of invisible walls, lots of story that you either enjoy or slog through.

What killed SWTOR was a lack of endgame, and no real aggressive plan to put on in place.  I am not sure ARR will have that problem so I think it will have more longevity.

What limits the replayability of the game is the small world, and a design that has you go to the same areas again to level new jobs.  After players have done the same Fates a million times and have gotten their 5th job to level cap, I think players will start to drop off.

I still don't understand why MMO's keep making it easier and faster to get to level cap...

The world feels small because you can teleport to each zone.  If you had to use your mount, it would seem very large.

There are a lot of zones and a lot of areas.

    My 2 cents.
