I've played GW2 for a weekend trial and liked it, didn't get far, but I liked it.
I've been looking at playing GW2 seriously for a while, my main focus is PvP, RvR type of PvP so I think the WvWvW would be a good fit, but...
Am I a bit late to start GW2, and so should I just plump for TESO and their incarnation of AvAvA????
Think I'm leaning towards pre-purchasing TESO at the moment...

I have played GW2 over 1 year now and WvW is all about zerging and AOE damage.
Played ESO Beta and there is not so much AOE and the Keep Fights are munch longer than in GW2. The whole AvA Map in ESO is really big in GW2 there are 3 small little Fighting Grounds, can walk from North to South iin 5 MIn.
For me it is clear ESO will be the next game i will enjoy RvR or AvA or AvA
If you like more PvP in BG or Tournaments, then you should look more on GW2.
If you like Zergfest and AOE then go GW2.
In big battles 100vs100 ESO has way better performance even in a stresstest beta
GW2 is the safer choice. You can level up fairly quickly in GW2, it's an enjoyable experience, and the max level stuff in GW2 is far less vertical than other games. As it stands, TESO is shaping up to be the next TORtanic.
Depending on what you're looking for the answer will be different.
I have experience in PVP with both games.
TESO hands down if that's what you're looking for.
Nonsense. You can get to max lvl in GW2 in a week.
And also your level barely influences PVP in any way.
As for RVR. They are almost the same. ESO is largely copying GW2. So they managed to improve it a bit.
But this is still not time proven. And you have to pay 60$ + 15$ each month, for basically the same.
My advice. Try to get in the ESO beta (which is easy they are giving away keys like hotcakes) and see which ones you like. Your post has simply attracted people who are biased on either side of this fense.
Fact of the matter is that only media can talk and say positive things about ESO's RvR combat. My guess is the media leaks means that this will be a fluid part of the next beta, giving you a chance to experience it for yourself.
Having only played rvr in GW2, I had fun, but it wasn't the "feeling" i had when playing the battleground stuff in a little known pay to win game called Ruins of Magic. It just felt like we were running from keep to keep to keep in this wave and I couldn't get down and personal in battle. I don't know if ESO fixes this or just replicates this on a massive scale.
I also find the combat critisms about ESO underwhelming. When iwas plying i hit armor and sword and i felt the impact in the sound. arrows from my wifes quiver whirled through the air. It felt good. best mace to shield feeling i'd felt in a bit.
Where is GW2 Free?
Every time I look it is $49.
I would play it if it was reasonably priced. But there is no way I am dropping $50 on a game that only takes a week to get to max level. $20 maybe.
This has got to be joke. Right?
Or is this the new RVR version of 'WoW was the first MMO?'
He was probably referring to the monthly sub. GW2=free and ESO=$15.
GW2 is buy to play. After the initial box price or digital download you can play the game as long as the servers are up without any additional fees. There is a cash shop but it is really not necessary. I have been playing since launch and never felt the need to buy anything from it.
The world versus world battles are lots of fun. I have watched some of the ESO video of pvp battles and it looks similar. I know all the fans are saying it is different but lets face it, it is very similar. Max level is irrelevant in world versus world really because you get boosted. I have maxed characters and lower level characters in world versus world and enjoy playing both. Initial price with GW2 and no future subs versus initial price and 15 a month. I just dont see the reason I should pay 15 a month if I can play GW2. Of course, this is all very personal. Maybe the money doesnt matter to you.
49$ and you get the heoric edition which has some fairly decent goodies.
But you aren't looking at it at the right way. It's 49$, that's it. There won't be another fee ever again if you don't feel like it.
The speed of the mole and the power of steel is my weapon
I would say wait for eso.
The choice is yours
its B2P you buy the box then nevermore. unless you like fluffy then you can buy gems to spend.
also eso will not be out till april, but I also recommend you not to buy eso for at least teh first 3 months, first the server of then will not take the charge it will be the launch month, then tehy also have several bugs to fix, and some of then hinder progress.
also in ESo you will take a good time to lvl enough so you can have fun on they war there, GW2 even though on W3 I don't recommend you not go below lvl 80 you can still go and lvl there, it jsut will be more frustating and you will need help to anything
Gw2 = If you want casual 3 Faction PvP and Small scale exploration PvE and lots of jumping puzzles. Brighter setting of the game.
ESO = If you want Hardcore 3 Faction PvP and Exploration based PvE with good voice overs and story. Darker setting of the game. More realistic.

The timing for GW2 would be just right, as they are about to start the WvW Spring Tournament in march. Since you already own it, not much reason not to try, is there?
Of course you should try to get beta access to ESO and try it for yourself. Shouldn't be too hard to get, they have been throwing out beta codes with both hands. Then choose the game you like more.
Because your focus is like mine....faction conflict....the answer is easy for me to give. Hands down ESO is THE ONE. DAOC is the gold standard for faction conflict. Matt Firror one of its creators is directing the building of ESO. From my limited exposure to ESO AvA...it could be the next leap forward from the original DAOC.
i would say the same. i own GW2 and have given it more than one try but i just can't enjoy an RPG where i don't feel like i am getting any stronger or look any different after level 10.
and yeah, the pvp is not the same as ESO. anyone that says that is either trolling or don't know what they are talking about.
it is similar in concept but ESO's pvp area is a much larger that's more like an open pvp area and not just keep zerging.
there are towns and pve quests to do and opportunities for small sale pvp and ganking.
the small scale pvp does have an effect pon the war as a whole too.
GW2 does have structured battleground style pvp so if you prefer that then you may want to play GW2 instead.
that is if you don't mind not progressing and just want to pvp purely for fun.
but other than that, i can't say i would suggest GW2 over ESO.
and if you don't care about pvp? i wouldn't suggest GW2 at all, i would recommend SWTOR before GW2's pve
just my personal opinion.
oh and GW2's story mode is an atrocity. ESO does a far better job in that department as well IMO.
So you never loot anything? Bag space was a MAJOR issue for me.
and here is teh deal the cyrodil works like the W3 on GW2, its instanced, don't have anything else to do, and since only way for you go to another faction is being lvl 50(from what I heard) everything you wanted from DAoC, is not on eso, sorry you will still need to keep looking.
now the story quests doing better then gw2? sorry also no, they are diferent, not better or worse, Eso is more linear
I suggest GW2, it's more fun game in my opinion.
Also later you can check TESO too, when it's done, may be it will be fun too, don't know, depends of tastes
(I can decribe my opinion if u like based on beta)
Also don't see any reason why to avoid one fun for another fun
I find it amusing that you genuinely think ESO is a "dark" and "hardcore" game.
My blog:
You've tried one game but have you tried the other?
The one you tried you already like. This seems like a no-brainer to me.
Get the other one after you're done with GW2 (up to you) and after there have been reviews and such. You might be saving yourself a disappointment.
