Which is the best game among the Elder Scrolls titles?
I want to include a poll. I realize that people will vote even if they haven't played all the games. I also realize that Arena and Daggerfall have only been played by a few of the old-timers around here. Even Morrowind is an old-timers' game, but a lot of people say it was the best of the ES series, even though the combat was problematic for a lot of people.
As for me, Morrowind is the best. I enjoyed Oblivion and Skyrim as well, but nothing was as amazing as Morrowind for me because I could actually fly using magicka resistance, levitate, and the boots of blinding speed. I loved that. And the great house quests! Finally, I really loved breaking into the vaults in Vivec. It was just a huge and amazing experience and I put in over 200 hours in that game.
Anyway, which one did you like best and why?

I've only tried Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and out of the three, Skyrim win hands down if we talk unmodded which is the only way I play them. Both Morrowind and Oblivion had crappy level scaling and just not an overall satisfying experience. In Skyrim the level scaling was more tolerable.
If you have to mod a game to make it playable then it's not a good game period. Mods are meant to enhance a game, not to fix a bad gaming experience. If that becomes necessary then I already lost interest
Ahh Morrowind... It is impossible to describe the feeling of playing that game when it first released. The music, the graphics (at the time), the exploration, the characters, the total freedom. Did I mention that beautiful music score?
I sunk countless hours into this game exploring every nook and cranny I could, poring over my physical game box map for new places to go. This was gaming nirvana for a lot of folks at the time. For me it's the greatest.
O_o o_O
Daggerfall, it was my first sandbox MMO even tough it was offline...
The freedom was incredible, and with my youngermans shoes it felt awesome... i was a huge sandbox fan back then...
(the older me definately prefers Themeparks... with sandboxy ellements, thats why i probably love ESo so much)
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Morrowind for me:
- Factions that had some impact on the story and at least some connections(for example the part of the story when the player required the recognition from all three great houses).
- Free creation of spells and some realy nice spell effects. While i do like the unique effects of fixed spells in Skyrim i absolutely hate the lack of diversity and the lack to customize my spellcasting.
- Not the best ui but still a lot better than thoose optimized for console like the ones form the later games.
- Great story with a much slower start until the player becomes the "hero". While all ES-stories are good some of them tell you very early how special you are(like meeting up with the emperor right at the beginning of oblivion, or revealing the dragonborn in skyrim).
The only thing skyrim realy improved is the character advacement. I love the perks(i prefere the more traditional rpg-mechanics) and the lack of some exploitive skills(like jumping an hour just to level that skill). Other things like crafting are a step into the right direction but still required a lot of modding to become great additions to the game and madding had a similar effect on Morrowind.
Well first off I usually judge games on Gamplay alone as that is what you spend most of your time in game doing. If I had to judge them on the story I would have picked Morrowind but Morrowind had some of the worst actual gameplay of the whole series. It was nothing but an unimaginative clickfest. Coming from the really great combat mechanics of Daggerfall this was a major WTF moment for me and if it wasn't for the great story I would say it was the worst of the series.
Now as for which one I actually picked I had to go with Skyrim. With the addition of dual wielding and the active blocking combat system it was a lot more interesting to actually play then any ES game since Daggerfall. Now as for Daggerfall I would have picked that if it wasn't for the 100,000 miles of randomly generated "Nothing" that was the world in that game.

Morrowind for the win!
Same.
I've always found Morrowind to be the best balance of features in the series. Arena and Daggerfall were a little too open, and Arena was a little too generic with the generated content at times - both were exceptional compared to almost any other game, though.
Morrowind had the perfect balance of openness, skill diversity, item diversity, story cohesion and side questing to make it a classic. I also don't remember too many people complaining about Morrowind like they do with every other TES title - I think Morrowind was the one that brought in enough people that it started that "I hate this new TES game" crap we get every time a new one was announced.
It's just louder now because of how many people Skyrim brought in.
For me it is not just morrowwind as mi fav Elder scrolls game........It is my favorite game of ALLLL time. Such memories

Love Morrowind, Obvlion and Skyrim but favorite is Morrowind.
I love that there are no quest markers, you stumble on things, search for things, discover things. And there is SOOOO much in that game.
I've tried Daggerfall but couldn't get used to the combat. I downloaded someone's attempt to move it to a 3d space which made playing the game easier, but apparently it's not finished and he's been working on it for years so I imagine that it's just a fun project for him.

That's the main problem with old games, if you didn't play them when they were new it can be really hard to get past how archaic they feel, no matter how good they are.

Sorry Skyrim, call me a graphic whore, but all ES games have been about immersion and while Skyrim had plenty of more restrictings then other ES games the game world was visually very well created. I also only once used a mod with Morrowind, can't recall it;s name only that it was a Star Wars mod.
Around this time next month I hope to be on my next new Elder Scroll Aventure......
I've taken similar polls to this before, and against my better judgement, I chose Oblivion. I'll choose Skyrim this time since it basically is Oblivion, only better, minus a functional Speechcraft.
At any rate - these questions are sort of pointless. There's no way of telling which one is best. All you can do is count up everyone's favorite. But even in a majority standard, that isn't the best - it's just the most favorite.
My point is, whatever complaints anyone has about any of them - I think we can all agree that each one is very special and showcase about the best gaming experiences you're going to find in their respective generations.
I was alive and able to play Arena and Daggerfall when they came out back in the day. I, unfortunately, never got to play them except one brief period when I was visiting a friend's house. I was just a kid at the time, and buying games we were fascinated with was a lot harder to do than it is today. As a result... I really cannot comment on those.
But when Morrowind came out... it was all over. Such a great game. And at the time, I never knew the difference about if something was good or not. I was brand new to the PC gaming scene (I was maybe 19 or 20) and simply put, the only experience I had with what an RPG should be was the Final Fantasy Series and other JRPGs I played in highschool. SImply put, nothing in my wildest dreams could have prepared me for something like Morrowind. Sure, I played D&D, but it never occurred to me that you could put that much freedom in a video game.
Oblivion came out some years later, and I remember at first not liking it. It's not that I was comparing it to Morrowind, as I don't usually do that. It was that, I hate to say it, the art direction of the game made me cringe. It was so bad, it bothered me before I even knew art direction was a thing. It was just wholly visually unappealing to me. It just looked stupid beyond measure. Thankfully, about a year after it released, I played through it again and forced myself to find things I actually liked about it. I put a couple of mods in to help the visuals a little, and... it was just great. It was the first time I actually understood that I didn't even have to do a "main quest." Even in Morrowind, that idea didn't click. I was young at the time, I had a different perspective in life - I wanted to believe in the quest. With Oblivion, I was a bit older, my life had gone to shit, I had no direction, and Oblivion allowed me to play without direction. Isn't it weird how our psyche works like that?
Skyrim released a few years back. And as far as I am concerned, it's my favorite for several reasons. I'm older now, and I just don't have time nor the patience for the bull$hit. That's why my name is, "No time for bs." Skyrim gave that to me. Nothing you did in the game was wasted. You were always getting stronger. The stories were still quite good, except it wasn't forced down my throat a bunch of extra stuff that I didn't care about anyway. The books were still there if I wanted some extra lore - and, sometimes I did. The world was a blast to explore, and I could just get lost in it. I have direction in my life these days, but I didn't let that stop me from just exploring. I explore, because it must be done. And exploring is so much more fluid in Skyrim. Combat is so much more fluid. I don't have to struggle with the controls like I once did. And to me, that is a huge deal.
Anyway, my point is - they're all great games. They all did some things better than others, and some things worse than others. But for me, Skyrim hit a really nice sweet spot that I really enjoy. I just wish it had an actual Speechcraft mechanic, and maybe Acrobatics too.
