What Zenimax did wrong was taken away the posibility to play the game you want to play. getting from 1 to 50 was fun and fast. getting from V1 to V2 was a pure quest grind. And this continues up to V10....
There is no other legit way to gain vet levels atm unless you exploit some glitches and might get you banned.
I was expecting that ESO would have multiple ways to gain levels, be it from quests / mob grinds / pvp ! This is no longer the case anymore...sadly
Casual players who spend 2 to 4 hours a day might not see max level in 2+ months from now. Many might quit if they dont like the quest grind and this is realy bad....
I am omw to V3 after leveling up a NB to V1 and quiting him to relevel a sorcerer :P The quest grind becomes a chore to do as there are so many quests you need to go trough that you dont feel like your part of a story anymore but just waisting your time and get the exp needed to go to the next zone.
I always hated questing.....but in ESO at least they are "fun" to do but its just that you have no other options to play the game and get to V10.... If Cyrodiil would open up to level trough Veteran ranks you have at least some other viable option and have fun while getting there.
Even with the new patch and its exp increased with 50% i doubt it will be enough. Not to mention that many people have already quit the game or are about to end their free month.
The time it takes to get to V10 is good, its just the options to us that makes it a long quest grinder and might bore many players to death.
I hope Zenimax is aware of this before that exodus starts. Its still a great mmo tough, i never tought it would be this good
You go from 1-50 with a variety of quests. Main story, mages guild, fighters guild... You are leveling at a speed of about 1 level per 90 minutes (give or take). Then you hit V1 and you have likely finished the main story, mages guild and fighers guild.
This leaves you with zone related quests only, some are good, some suck. It also feels odd to be transported into another faction. The entire idea is half baked and likely last moment stuff.
Now going from V1 to V2 is not some soft step up for the average player, its a huge old school grind... The likes of which I have not seen in a decade.

And that's not necessarily a good thing. leveling from 1-50 was slow-ish but overall very well balanced and a lot of fun. SUddenly, at VR1, the game just throws up a brick wall and hands you a pillow, telling you to break through that wall it and ONLY with that pillow.

The problem is that all those options are much harder to balance than questing. What might take a take a solo person 10 hours to grind can take a group of 4 20 minutes and suddenly going from VR1 to VR10 becomes a choice between 5 hours of group grinding or 200 hours of questing. Who wouldn't pick the 5 hours of grinding than go back and get the skill points as needed? Of course than you have a ton of VR10's complaining how meaningless the game is.
I do think once we get a few adventure zones added they will soften the curve from VR1 to VR10. Good or bad this is a artificial wall to keep to many people pilling into a hallow end game right now. If they fixed the PVP scaling I would say that VR10 doesn't matter and don't bother but it kind of does right now because of that.

If you know of a way to grind out VR that fast I'd love to hear it :P

Well as ESO is SWTOR's sister themepark , indeed it was half baked , Zenimax saw that SWTOR lost lots of players that reached 50 in a very short time , so they added the VR1-10 grind into their game to keep you all occupied. To think I was thinking of suggesting a hard mode for SWTOR's quests and planets and bump up the level cap a lot , not sure it is such a good idea now.
Cheers,

Now don't get me wrong, I did the gear grind for WotLK and Cataclysm, had a level 50 in Vanguard: SOH, and a level 85 raiding swashbuckler (last I checked) in EQ2, but I did all of that because there was still a sense of character progression and various activities that were EXCLUSIVE to endgame players.
In TESO, a game that I've enjoyed tremendously for the entire leveling experience, I have absolutely no ambition to do my Veteran Ranks. There is simply no way, none, that I am going to drag myself through every quest for BOTH other factions to get to VR10, especially if dungeons only reward me the first time around. That's just too much time investment for ten "levels".
Now, if VR were optional that would be one thing, but I get stomped routinely by VR5-10 players in PVP, who seem to almost one-shot me.
I'm not much of a PVP player anyways, truth be told, so I was more excited for Craglorn, until I saw that you needed to be VR10 to do anything in it. Sure, they say you can 'visit" at VR1, but I'm guessing that you won't be able to do anything without instantly dying.
I guess I'm more irritated than anything that they are locking out the brand-spanking-new dungeon and raid from endgame players who won't throw in the extra 230+ hours to grind veteran ranks.
I agree, and I'm not going to do the VR ranks my self either even when I love this game so far otherwise. I will play to max level (complete my char's faction quests) on Dagerfall Cov and another char on Ebonheart, if I cant do any content after that because I'm not VR10 then I'm done with the game. I've already have my moneys worth but it will be sad that this game wont allow me to play past 50.
The VR stuff sounds like really hastily made design decision just before the launch anyway, since I recall the word was 6 months ago that you cannot experience other than your own faction's PVE content, people whine, Zenimax decided okay lets give them all the areas and we can drag on the leveling too so no one whines about too short leveling. Should that be true or not, it's still a crap decision that marks a finish line for me in the game.
Edit; have to add, I first thought VR ranks were just kind of "honorary" levels that point out that you have done all kinds of stuff after hitting max level, now that in reality it means VR10 is the ACTUAL max level, is supa' bad. I've always loved faction identity in mmorpgs, first they allowed every race to be in any alliance, which I hate, then they add the PvE content of other factions, which I hate, and even cross faction guild chats. Just meh, but yeah, I'll keep having fun with going through 2 of the factions on separate chars and then call it quits.
Back in the old days leveling took for ever which I love, as long as its fun then who cares, but people want to be maxed to soon, and then what? You quit the game that's what we see so I'm sorry but make up your minds...

Jesus christ, read the thread instead of posting a reply to the title.
Just wanted to post a short guide for everyone in this thread on how to level in VR:
You can get from VR1 to VR3ish without doing any quests. You can do this by simply going through the first 5 zones of your first VR faction and only do the dark anchors, dungeons, and world bosses.
Next, go to Cyrodiil and go PvE'ing. The daily quests in Cyrodiil give a very large amount of VP. To clarify, I'm not referring to the PvP daily quests....I'm talking about the PvE quest hubs scattered about Cyrodiil. You can often gain 100-200k VP from clearing out all the dailies at one hub. Yes this is questing, but it's very fast because there's no story or dialog to follow (for the most part). Also, many of these daily quests can be completed in usually less than 1 minute and grant a generous amount of VP.
Dungeon crawling in Cyrodiil also gives great VP. Completing these dungeons yields just as much VP as over-world dungeons...and honestly the Cyrodiil dungeons are a lot more fun. The dungeons themselves are more interesting...and running dungeons in enemy territory is really, really fun.
If you do some dailies in Cyrodiil every day and clear out all the dungeons, you'll probably be around VR5 or VR6 by the time you finish all the dungeons and getting all 40 something skyshards.
Now at this point you're VR5-6 and you haven't quested at all. You can speed run through each zone's main story in order to complete the main story quest so you progress to the next faction's VR content. You'll probably be VR6-7 by this time.
Once you get to the next faction, go do all the dungeons, world bosses, and dark anchors just like you did before for all 5 zones. You'll end up around VR8 by the end of this.
Once you've done everything above, you'll still likely have probably 2-4 VR ranks to finish (you're probably between VR6 and VR8, depending on how much time you spent in Cyrodiil and how many dailies you did). At this point, you can either do the quests in your final faction's VR content...you can do dailies in Cyrodiil, you can grind mobs (very slow VP, but good for gold, mats, craft levelling, etc), or you can PvP (probably the best way to get VP from VR8-10).
An efficient way to gain VP from PvPing is to spam Mutagen on zergs (boring) or spend a lot of time on anit-personnel siege weapons like meatbag catapults.

It's funny how zenimax just tried to slow people down because there's no content at V10.
Instead they ended completely boring people and causing them to unsubbing before first payment.
Even playing alts is ruined because you know the shitstorm that's waiting you at veteran ranks
Utterly and completely bad design choice.

Is it so hard to understand that people enjoy the stories,
just like other people like to read books.
and eternal character progression, is an awesome thing
because many of us enjoy the voyage... And not the goal..
on top of that, there is Questing
there is exploration
there is dungeons
there is group dungeons
there is open world elite mobs
and there is PvP.
And you can change your build whenever you want, turning from casterto mellee to tank to healer, if that isnt diversity, tell me what is?
For people like me, that enjoy the stories and the content, there is more then enough diversity
