For me, it's SMITE...3rd person moba with emphasis on skillshots/aiming. Not a big fan of the main mode conquest, but love arena and assault, which is just 5v5 action, no stupid metas . Not only is the gameplay addicting, but it's also completely free, you can obtain all gods just by playing the game and earning favor. You can also buy all present and future gods for $30. Also when you buy it, they refund all the favor you've used up to that point.
Probably the best 3rd person pvp game out there right now.
Marvel Heroes ... Diablo-clone where you can play Iron man, Cap America and so on ....
STO .. only TNG era Star Trek RPG out there.
I thought I'd be the first to mention Marvel Heroes, glad others feel the same way. This game introduced me to ARPGs. It's the first MMO since SWG to have me totally absorbed for long stretches at a time and the first F2P I've ever played that feels like they've nailed the balance between stuff they give away for free and stuff that I'm happy to buy.
Definitely. Usually i don't spend money on F2P game but I did spend $30 on MH (the avenger pack is on sales on Steam) and I am glad I did.
It is a fun game.
BTW, if you like ARPGs, there are quite a few others to check out. Diablo 3 obviously. My fav indie is Incredible Adventure of Van Helsing (the sequel just came out). While it is indie, it is very polished, just smaller in scope.
Torchlight 1 & 2, Path of Exile are some other ARPGs you may want to check out.
+1 = League of Legends: Regardless of what can be said about the toxic community, the game has by far the best f2p model I've seen. The gameplay is also more fluid and responsive than any other MOBA i've played/seen. Although, SMITE is pretty darn fun, the character choices are considerably limited in comparison. If you're not into gods and mythology, SMITE leaves you unsatisfied, whereas, LoL covers everything from cute characters, to girl-power femme fatales, to beastly monsters, to matrix-agent-like gun weilders, to robots and scifi / steampunk characters.
+1 = Hearthstone: Just, try it. If you haven't, you have no excuse. Addicting card game that's easily accessible and almost impossible to master, as there is a high level of "random" involved. as all card games have... but this one has Blizzard's polish all over it.
TBH I can't believe in 4 pages or responses, I didn't see either of these 2 games mentioned.

MOBA is not my cup of tea, but Hearthstone is really a fun game. I am eagerly waiting for the PvE expansion (coming in July).
reading the replies I can really see why so many hate f2p. The best f2p game should be the one you like playing the most, not the one that offers the most free shit. Very few of the relies even mention if the game is good or not, it's just a list of all the stuff you can get for nothing. Sad that it's a lot of the same people complaining about why all mmos are the same.
I like swtor because it's raiding has been easy to get into and has a lot of progression to work though.
Tera had the best combat and I liked the art design of the entire game.
warframe was a stupid amount of hours killing shit with friends.
I haven't played any of them for free, but I probably wouldn't be playing any of them if they weren't free to start with.

Although the freedom to fully customize decks was always there, it's about time we had some new cards to choose from, as "flavor of the month" has already plagued the game, just like it does with all competitive multiplayer games.
the "i win" deck for each class is getting really boring to see. Things need to get shaken up! Everyone already knows how the game will turn out by turn 2-3 as it is now because of the 1337 cookie cutter builds getting too popular.
Sometimes, I really hate the internet. Even though it's so necessary, it also ruined gaming for those of us that don't look up "how to win everytime" and follow some pre-made tried and tested tactic someone else put up on youtube.
Dungeon Fighter Online. Such a great game. If you were a fan of arcades in the 90s, this was a homage to every 2d fighter and side scrolling beat em up you know and love.

That is why I am waiting for the pve expansion. There is no longer the pressure to "win".
I will also use D3 as an example. If you want to do T6 efficiently as a Wiz, there are may be 2 or 3 (arcane vyr/tal archon, MM conflag, fire archon with MM conflag) builds that are the best.
But many are viable (like lightning or cold) meaning that while you will have a slower clear time, you will still be killing elites/champs and completing the rifts.

D3 is indeed a good example.
I stopped playing that for a number of reasons, (all negative) -- but the biggest thing that keeps me away is how this uber-build trend saturates it. The game is even designed with this in mind. You can't proceed until you go back and change your character into one of these 2 (3 if lucky) respective builds. Then you're elite/cool. Only then will you be able to proceed.
-
-D2 let you build pretty much how you wanted... that was the beauty of it. Become godly in your OWN way. RPGs in general used to cherish that approach. We won't stop you from having fun just because you decided to build a dagger wielding warrior."

Thanks for the recommendations. I plan to branch out into other ARPGs very soon since I'm having so much fun with MH (I believe I even already have Torchlight via a sale a long time ago). I would have given Path of Exile a go already but their skill system looks pretty intimidating for a noob like myself.

Pretty accurate except the last sentence. You *can* do T6 with a lightning or a cold build (not the dominant ones) *but* you won't have top efficiencies. That means, you may have to kite more, or spend more time killing the bosses.
So you still *can* proceed (there are lots of youtube videos to back this up). The dominant build problem is not absolute in D3. In fact, it helps that it can be a solo game where you don't have to care if the other players in the group has a problem with your build.

PoE has two systems. The huge chart system is just a bunch of passives. You don't have to be intimated. If you do it "wrong", there is no biggie except your numbers will not be optimized. The skill gems are more interesting.
I feel like I'm stealing from them because it's a complete game PvE-wise. It really is a Triple-A MMO that should be sub-based.
The best feature I like is you can level just one toon and you can play all sorts of roles -- healer, tank, mdps, rdps, support, etc. Then you can break down your role into sub-roles like if you're a healer you can be a raid healer, tank helaer, shielder, etc.
Basically, what they did was look at every single MMO on the market, figure out the top features of that MMO, and incorporated it into their game... for free! There is nothing in other games that Rift doesn't have (PvP is another issue that is lacking in Rift).
What is your F2P game of choice and why?
Yes, Rift is my current favorite as well. It just has every content that I want for an MMO!
Rift would have to be the best f2p mmo out right now. It doesn't restrict the player as much as other MMOs, such as EQ2, Lotro, Swtor, etc. I just didn't like Rift's gameplay, otherwise i would be playing it.
The entire game is free, no pay to win, only cosmetic.
A pretty decent game to boot, with excellent crafting, so so combat, and a huge world to explore.
Just checked Fallen Earth on YouTube but the graphics look very dated? I checked out this vid - - which was posted earlier this month so it's not an old gameplay video.
Looks like an old PS2 game or indie game.
What's so good about it that can make me look past the dated graphics?
Probably Neverwinter was one of my favorites, it was super fun, loved the combat style and the PvP but I never stuck with it.
Another is probably Tera, although I didn't stick with that either, it was definitely fun and I liked the combat style there too, plus the characters to me were adorable.
MOBA:
My favorite has to be SMITE. My favourite game in the whole world at the moment haha, I absolutely love it and the only things you pay for are cosmetics. Like skins and ward skins.

All in all though, WoW is my calling.
Haha SMITE is the only MOBA i can play, but i play it here and there for quick pvp action. They really had a solid idea though, its hard to stand out in the MOBA world.
I still play Rift since late Vanilla, so Rift for me. I sometimes feel bad for Trion, it feels like stealing sometimes.. seriously.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

SMITE for me, as well. Regular updates, fast gameplay, really entertaining gods and skills, and regular new gods/skins.
Favorite F2P MMO is APB: Reloaded. If we don't consider that an MMO, then Free Realms.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

Many many things. But you sound like you are very uptight about graphics, so it may not be for you.
The graphics may not be the best but it has great atmosphere for a post-apoc type of game. And when I say it has good crafting, I mean that all weapons and armor in the game are player made. Loot drops are mats only for the most part. A gear drop is very very rare and usually only as part of a quest. So this makes crafting a very important part of the game.
I can't comment much on the PvP because I never did much, but many ingame players seem to enjoy that aspect.
But I doubt from your comment that you are much of a crafter either, and the combat probably won't be your cup of tea either.
However since it won't cost you a dime I think it is well worth giving it a reasonable trial period. I never expected to like it either, but you never know unless you try.
I forgot to mention the flexibility you have in creating and upgrading you character. It is quite different as well from the usual MMO in that you assign points to various skills and attributes. You have the choice of Melee, Pistol or Rifle (sniper) toon. You cannot usually combine the different types because there are limited skill points available. Its very good system IMO and is another good aspect of the game.
FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

So most of the responses are sub based games that have added a F2P model.

Hard question, I did like EQ2 but the terrible F2P model killed it for me.
Maybe DDO, it actually have at least some of the D&D feeling in it. Or TERA, pretty good for F2P.
But then most F2P games I tried (and it was a bunch) were pretty terrible.
+10 Lord of the Rings Online (Best F2P Model, free until level 40 (or free ´til cap via farming TP, huge world, TONS of instances, dwarves! etc..)
+5 Tera (terable community, nice game overall... )
+2 Everquest 2 (Huge World, nothing more...)
+1 Age of Conan (Best Looking MMO, great atmo, "great world" with shitty gameplay mechanics)
Definitely. Usually i don't spend money on F2P game but I did spend $30 on MH (the avenger pack is on sales on Steam) and I am glad I did.

Yes, Rift is my current favorite as well. It just has every content that I want for an MMO!
A better definition of "best" would help, but as far as best considering the F2P model then Rift wins hands down!
As far as quality of game play and content...... I have not found a F2P game yet to keep my attention longer than 3-4 months.
edit- missed the lil "no" nvm...
Age of Wushu was the best f2p I've ever played.
