So much for the sugar coating, "things will get better from now on" and similar postings and articles we've had just one week ago.

I am so good, I backstabbed your face!

To preface my comment: I am saddened that people lost their jobs.

That said, Linda is the only one I will miss. I'm not a "lore guy" so the Lore Master doesn't really impact me. However, I do NOT like the direction EQN has been heading so I actually am glad that Georgeson is not leading that project.  Still, not pleased that anyone lost their jobs no matter how disappointed I've been with EQN.

as the poster above said I am never happy someone loses their paycheck, with that said after Dave G ruined Tribes 2 I never trusted him again and glad I didn't.  He wasn't helping EQN or EQNL by his marketing speak and hipster pony tail.  He was never a good producer, he should have chased a career in advertising instead.

/Salute and thanks to Dave and you others who have been let go. Everquest was introduction to theses types of games. In fact, I started it in June of 2000 on  my honeymoon. Perhaps that's why my marriage failed lol. I fully understand why many in the community called it Evercrack. I remember lots of old jokes about rangers from that game (I played a ranger). Lots of guilds got so close they crossed the country to meet up for parties. As for EQN, the thing that got me intriqued with it was watching the videos by Dave about the upcoming game. Sadly, I'm now going to have to say no George, no EQN for me. Please realize that this is only my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions. No game has ever immersed or hooked me like Everquest, and I suppose none ever will. It was like being addicted....you were always chasing the next big high (game) but you never quite found it. Thanks for letting me grieve the loss for a minute.

Columbus Nova will give those two positions to toadies who will toe their corporate line without question.

This is all a control issue...

I guess I'm in the minority, I'm glad he's gone.  For all of you that are torn emotionally over this, ask yourself what real purpose did he serve in the actual development of any of the EQ franchise games.  Same with "Brasse" Linda Carison and a handful of other people that got layed off today.

Majority of the layoffs were management ones, and community relationes or liason type jobs that could easily be cut and served very little purpose in the development of the games.  They were positions to either communicate with the playerbase or people like in David Georgeson's case a guy who just managed people and reported to Smedley, easily a position that could be let go.

I only saw a couple of cases were they fired a developer or artist, and no coders so far that I see from the list that we know off.   Thank goodness, although I'd be glad if they let some of the old developers go, as their creativity is seriously lacking with the type of content they are putting out nowadays.

The direction EQ1 has taken over the last few years, I for one am glad they are getting rid of some of these folks, if it means they are rethinking the vision of EQ franchise.

If only thats what it really meant.  I'm guessing its more of just a money thing than an actual understanding of what originally made their games appealing and an attempt to reverse course.

Fresh blood will do some good either way.

Nope Smed wants a pvp focus like the rest of the world.

Dude you really need to stop with sweeping generalisations in your every post. Seriously, are you always like this? no wonder people don't take what you post seriously.

Is that your retort really? i am not the one who quotes super data and oblivious to what term 'retention' means. And neither do i claim to speak on behalf of rest of the world.

    Just stop please.

Thanks for reminding me that bully somehow fell off of my block list. I shall fix that in just a few moments.

I don't think they are getting any "fresh blood" (new hires) though, I think they are eliminating positions that were truly unnecessary to begin with from the majority on the list of people that got layed off.  Pretty much the bulk of it was managerial positions/community liason, and they weren't doing a good job either in terms of the EQ1 community, most people have been unhappy with the direction EQ1 has taken over the last several years.

Maybe, but they are in desperate need of some people who can get the ball rolling, and that isn't going to happen by removing people.

Well the list breaks into two groups:

    • Community Relations and the like, these are people who have largely failed to foster community in recent years. Mind there have been exceptions like the EQ Not! guy that left because of lack of support and Margaret Krohn (left to persue other opportunities) but they had already gone.
    • Dave Georgeson et al who have been responsible for rolling that ball and have been failing badly at doing it.
So if they want to "get the ball rolling" it was way past  time to find some new people to do it.

There's something of value that the investment firm wants to market, it's really really doubtful that it's an MMO. More likely, it's an engine (possibly the one they were building for EQN). Selling licenses for an engine can make lotsa bucks, dare I say, Columbus Nova is interested in money more than gaming.

Then i guess they are not very smart investors since they could have bought much more proficient companies who specialize in mobile, tablets and consoles.

They bought off a game division which specializes in MMO but don't want to sell MMO? what?

    Like someone else said.

They could have bought it for the new Engine SOE was developing.

Also the EverQuest Franchise has a lot of value.

Both things they can make a lot of Money on by licensing out.

In worst case, they just dump this studio and sell off it´s assets. I am pretty sure there will be some large studios lining up to buy the EverQuest franchise.

Still waiting for John Smedley to get the boot!  As nothing is going to change, as long as he stays on the helm.

David was the face of EQN, he seemed to hold a real passion for the project. I'm not sure how they'll do without him, but I can tell that these news bring EQN's hype down another notch.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

"It's the end of the world as we know it."

Looks like Columbus are intent on "transforming" this studio, but transforming it into what exactly ? I have a sneaky feeling that I am not a part of Daybreak's target audience any longer. I must admit the new name leaves me cold.

So instead of focusing on promoting the new corporate identity and direction of the studio (where's the new logo ?), they are first concentrating on seeing how many people they can fire ? Good start.

If I was an EQ fan, I'd be seriously worried at this point. Watching this story unfold has me thinking the next installment in the EQ franchise might well be running on Android...

No, that was when Sony sold SOE, now we're seeing them whittling down the 'expenses' prior to the 'asset stripping' more to come i am afraid, very much more. Investment companies do not make things. image

  • RaapnaapRaapnaap Member UncommonPosts: 455

The moment Sony sold SOE to CN, was the moment I already saw this coming.

CN is simply liquidating assets and selling them off for a profit, as soon as the last penny has been milked from existing live services.

Good luck to all affected staff.
