How do we know there will be balance?  What about stability and performance?  Lag?  Guilds and "whales"?  Combat?

All these factors need to be considered via actual interactions of the gameplay, on a massive scale (not a demo presentation).

    [mod edit]

What CIG does instead is this - they gather metrics from hundredthousands of PvP and PvE fights in Arena Commander. They showed this information to the community in an older post at some time - very interesting. Based on this meta-data they do their ship balancing.

The "play Ship XXX for free this week" events (were you do NOT  have to spend the in game virtual currency REC)  are focussed campaigns where CIG is gathering specific metric data on a single ship type.

So ... basically CIG is exactly doing as you proposed ... gathering metrics on connection speeds, lag spikes, ship wins and losses, general combat stats like maneuverability, missile and shield effectiveness etc.  Information on "whales" they do have from their sales data.  Information on guilds they have from the "Organisations" tab on their website  (how many orgs, how many players in each org) --> the information on Organisations also yielded some interesting data on who bought the bigger ships like the Javelin destroyer ... often it was bought by organisations as a flagship ... and they use this fact for recruiting.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the concept of crowdfunding and how its done before you are calling someone a retard for supporting a crowdfunding project.

It is not being shot down because its a crowdfunding project .... people support it within their means (be it 25 $ or 15.000 $). And it is all voluntary. No one forces you to buy anything more than the basic package, as you will be able to get EVERYTHING in game with in game money once the game has launched.

You may want to familiarize yourself with what cig said about on their kicstart page : THEY ARE SELLING SHIPS.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen/posts/351106

"Every single additional ship we offer for sale in the next 48 hours will never be sold for cash again"

Now all paid poster should go to handlers asking how to spin this. i am curious how will be explained that ships are not sold when is clearly stated that are ofered  for sale.

This is a quote from November 2012.

Ships are part of each pledge package. Pledge packages (which include more items than a ship) were sold during this Kickstarter campaign. But yes, every pledge package does ALSO include a ship.

BTW CIG has re-offered some of these packages at a later date ... so this sentence from the Kickstarter page is not true anymore. CIG has been very open about this and you will find discussions about this topic in the internet. Pros and cons galore.

Is funny how hard you try to white-wash the story and make it like you don;t buy ships but you donate while from the begining it was selling ships and CIG writted black on white.

I somewhat understand where they come from. CIG got 2,134,374 $ and 34.397 backers from Kickstarter. They got 75 mil and some 630.000+ backers from their own crowdfunding campaign.

There are quite a few of these 630.000 backers that also want access to those ship types offered during the Kickstarter campaign, although they heard about Star Citizen after the end of the Kickstarter campaign in Nov 2012.

CIG has to look after ALL of their fanbase - the early backers (Kickstarter and others) AND the mass of other, later backers.

really unfortunate way to formulate things....

Seeing how a high-def graphical asset can with out a problem run you over 250$ if you want to get it for your own projects. And these are not cheaply made, slapped together crap either... Because not matter what you think about the game or the art style... The actual models are very finely detailed and very well planned and designed.

In fact í´d say that 250$ for a asset of that quality is a very resonable price.

Now with that said.,.. I know full and well what you tried to say.... But the unfortunate choice of words served me this on a platter.

This have been a good conversation

Of course they have to look after entire fanbase. All i said is that they sell good ships with great value.

They recognized that they sell ships on kickstarter and europe play vat for the ships.
