I remember when Carbine said that WS will never go f2p because all they need is a small to medium sized community to make them happy.  Well they got their small community and they are going f2p. HA!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sub games don't work if the game itself is boring and not fun to play!

    Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge
Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.

I'm sure the initial Cash Shop and F2P monetization will be very attractive.

Wildstar has a lot of convincing to do.

But I don't expect that "generous" monetization to remain for very long. I don't think the switch to F2P is going to make the game popular overnight, and the revenue pressure will continue to mount.

Should know by now if a mmo says they'll never go f2p, end up going, so no mmo is safe out there. And Have not seen a sub game working just yet, even wow put in a token system seeing how there trying to keep people around.

Agree. Although a part of me even wonders how popular the initial take up will be. Launching in "fall" there will be a lot of competition from other games.

CoH was closed less than a year after going f2p; Zynga continues to lay off staff; Daybreak are "considering" other payment options and seem to have started on the path of paid DLC.

And as you say the revenue pressure will continue to mount.

Sounds like many here saw this coming. I always had fun playing WS. But in the end, ESO and other games were just more accessible, i.e. the sub just wasn't worth it for WS. Another poster commented the sub model wasn't the main issue, it was the core game and gameplay, but not everyone is a hardcore PvP or raider. For those of us who generally enjoyed it, this is good news.

who cares if wildstar is going free.  Servers were empty 2 months after start and only bots remained gathering gold.

Yay!! cant wait for the F2P. I love how SWTOR and LOTRO nickel and dime ya for everything in the game hope its the same way

Expected move from NCSoft. However, they must work hard towards providing some meaningfull endgame activities outside raiding. Because right now besides raiding there is very little else to do once you reach the level cap.

And no, player housing, crafting and PvP in its current state do not count as meaningfull activities.

    Boooooo!

It doesn't exactly take long to hit 50 without boost potions. Those will just be used by people making their 4th alts.

Played this at launch and it was an okay experience. I thought the telegraph system seemed like a good idea at first but then they just started to annoy the crap out of me. It was also always really hard to get a good group of people together to do some content with. Questing really felt boring and bland and I usually never give up before level cap but this time I did. It felt grindy and very repetitive. Glad to see the games going the f2p route like many others. Hopefully new interest will spark some much needed updates of the game mechanics. Sure it was over-hyped but it's far from a bad game. More mediocre than bad but the hype made people give up quicker, me including.

"So, now that it’s official… will you be coming back to Nexus?"

I will not be returning, but the reason is that I refuse to play another MMO with traditional leveling and a complete disregard for PvPers.  For those players that like PvE and a corky IP, absolutely you all should give 'er a go.  As a F2P title you have nothing to lose.

In the mean time I'll be here staring at my computer waiting for Crowfall and Camelot Unchained to release.

    In a nut shell:

How much of the game is accessible to Free players?

We place no restrictions on any of the game’s content. Every zone, every dungeon, every raid, every battleground... they’re all available. All players will be able to create characters of every race, class, and path while choosing any tradeskills they like. Characters can achieve level 50 and path level 30, just as they can under the current system. There are some restrictions on services and social functions, however, as noted in the table below.

What access will Free players have to future game content?

All updates will be available to both Free and Signature players. However, we do plan to include optional purchases with all new content. We may also offer some new content and full expansion packs exclusively for purchase in the future.

What types of accounts will be offered when the game goes Free-to-Play?

There will two main types of account when the game transitions to Free-to-Play:

Free accounts get full access to the game. There is no recurring payment of any kind required.

Signature accounts get everything provided by the Free service, along with the unique bonuses and benefits detailed below. Signature accounts require a payment plan offered in 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month increments including C.R.E.D.D., Game Time Card, or recurring payments.

Might have to stop playing now, the quality of the game will fall off for sure.

I find it amusing that on the official forums the drama about people not getting the unique mount since they weren't sub the whole time is far, far greater then the so called proclaimed drama that some claim would take place with game going F2P.

People actually saying they'll quit playing the game since they can't get the mount iinstead of stopping with playing because they are going F2P.

No no way FFXIV seem like it's untouch, sooner or later may end up doing the same.

    I'm not surprised.

But this is a good move on Carbine's part. I see it doing well as a F2P if they keep it fair.

I don't get why people clamor for a game going f2p. You've got a portion of the game's life where devs put resources back into it to make content to keep subscribers happy and attract new subs vs a time where devs put resources into making stuff that will sell in a cash shop. Why would anyone want in on a game after it makes that turn?

Could be said that WS was "yet another game" ruined by a subscription.

Indeed this is what Carbine said.

So as a sub isn't working and Carbine has said the IP won't support b2p your option would be ...... to close the game?

Just because you like FFXIV and it has a sub it does not follow that all sub games are good. Indeed FFXIV - with its sub - was hardly a poster for sub based games when it first launched. I suggest that FFXIV is "worthy" not because it has a sub but because SE "care" about the Final Fantasy brand. Indeed they make good f2p Final Fantasy games as well.

And talking of f2p games there are bad ones as well as good. And yes conversions tend to "less good" because they were not designed as f2p from day 1.

Indeed. Revenue lower than when they closed CoH. Subs are very low and - presumably - this announcement means the downward trend has continued ... downwards. Last roll of the dice.
