Bravo to MMORPG.com for conducting a good interview, instead of asking general knowledge questions like other sites (though, you did ask a few) there were specific questions of a relevant nature for the community at large that no other website will ask.
If this interview is worth anything its because it asked about the server populations however Im very disappointed in only one thing: you let him skirt the issue. In response Casey Keefe, said: We never have and never will comment in regards to subscriber and player numbers.
His statement is inaccurate (possibly a lie); you let him get away with it. In the past SOE actually has revealed the server populations and subscriber numbers, after a few months of the games release they stopped releasing that information (for whatever reason). This is fact, and others will attest to that.
So, a follow up-question should have looked like this: You say you have never commented on the population/subscriber numbers yet SOE used to release this information on a regular basis up until (place date here). Other gaming companies such as (insert here) release this type of information on a regular basis, why is it that SOE has stopped communicating this information to its players?
.... follow-up questions are a must... this interview was a good start but I should hope that any future interviews use follow-up questions that don't allow the person to dance around the question or give non-answers, which is what happened here.
Swg pre cu was great, and the cu wasnt bad but nge sucks. I think soe should make "classic" servers. Classic servers on other mmo's such as dark age of camelot are great for ppl who hate the updates. Soe, let us old players move our charecters to classic pre cu, or cu servers! then the noobs can have the nge, and us vets can have our game back. SWG, was the best mmo i had ever played, change it back, and im sure tons of players would come back.
only someone who hates star wars would continue to subscribe to SWG NGE. because i hold a special place in my heart for star wars and SWG:pre-CU, i cancelled and stayed cancelled.
continuing to subscribe to SWG is like enabling an alcoholic with a weekly allowance so that they can buy more alcohol. stop delaying the inevitable closure of SWG, cancel now, let LA boot SOE to the curb and give the IP to a more competent developer to recreate SWG pre-CU.
With SOE's recent number of mainly disapointments, they seem to be bitter with people now, considering his multiple "No comment." Feel bad for whoever had to give the interview...SOE sucks.
Once again I see tons of negative comments. I played this game when it first came out, only to quit because of jackasses in the game stealing my missions and running around like fools. It sure looks like NGE has run these fools off, and I have really enjoyed the game since the changes. I have seen comments about the subscriber count dropping since the changes - first off since SWG doesn't publish these numbers and never has, no one really knows. Secondly, I suspect it is far more likely that the numbers dropped and that NGE was in response to lower numbers. Personally I am just glad to see a game publisher ignore the 'power gamer' assholes who have ruined virtually every other MMO out there and reinvent SWG as a FUN game that actually allows for *gasp* ROLEPLAYING. Basically - if you don't like it, STFU and move on to the next game.
P.S. If this post angers you, you are probably one the assholes I am refering to.
hi guys, i used to play SWG when it first come out!
can you guys tell me what are CU and NGE stands for? and when did it comes out?
when i played, we used to grind the xp from Tusken Raiders Castle (on tatooine) and the holocron came in, and i did my share to get the force sensitive (i mastered 16 professions, still no Jedi)
anyone.. thats when i left SWG~
anyone willing to fill in the time gap from then to now?

You have your perspective and the people who don't like the NGE have thiers. I wasn't a powergamer and I can't stand what they did to the game. So instead of stereotyping people who have problems with the game perhaps you should jsut go play the game.
I was apart of a very great group of RPers who had quite a few events on Eclipse. Very few of us were power gamer "assholes".
So I guess what I really want to say is... quite being a stereotyping dillhole.
You all saying NGE destroyed the game?? CU damaged the game??
I will say they started destroying the game already when they unleashed Jump To Lightspeed (JTL) on us! Within 4 months after they released this expansion I saw the population within the major cities drop by more then 50%! I saw famous large and thriving player cities go down and turning into ghost towns!!
Cantina's? Who doesnt remember those? Reallife female players using their nice characters flirting with us in roleplaying matter to collect our precious credits what an overwhelming atmosphere hung there in those busy populated cantina's! I spend hours and hours and made lots of new friends there! Those cantina's became empty tombs within a few months after release of JTL!
I was guildleader of a very large guild with over 300 active members! We had a great city! This active guild and town died within 4 months after release of JTL like many others!
Why? The community didn't want the JTL expansion!! ....yet! We wanted SOE to fix the groundgame first! Fix the Smuggler profession (Number 1 in most wanted bugfix!!) ..wich they never did!!
Instead they unleashed a very buggy and imbalanced expansion on us, wich introduced even more bugs into the groundgame as well!! Also attracking tons of anoying young FPS fanatics wich litterly destroyed the whole escence of Roleplaying! Local was turned into a whining L33T chat!!
SOE lost tons of players already before CU was launched! I left SWG before CU like the rest of my guild and other friends did! And I never regret it! More when reading what damage CU did to SWG and the final deadblow NGE gave! Sad realy!
And you know why they wont open classic servers?? you realy want to know why?? Because when they do its admitting they screwed up! It will hurt their already vanished EGO even more!!
Every other player here that works in the ICT like myself know its DAMN WELL possible to launch classic servers! Every decent developer company has release management! It will cost some work to do it! But it's possible! I think it will be EASY to do compared to trying to fix the current dead version of SWG thats running on the live servers now!
SWG was the BEST EVER MMO out there! It was the most diverse with endless possibilities! The best in roleplaying! It had a fantasic SWG community wich consisted of many SW fans! It's such a shame how it all went trough the drain!
Just once I would like to see a SWG interview with some kind of substance. By constantly giving vague (or in this case none at all) answers to questions, they just give the haters more ammunition.
Very regular subscriber number updates have been given by WoW and EVE....Sony is only admiting they are hiding something.
LOL LMAO ROTFLMA SOE sure did brag about sever pop back in 03-04 when they had people playin thats just funny as he11. It's was posted on the main page of the web site at the time. It's nice that Soe's looking into all the reasons people left abd all but it might would have helped to think about how to keep people in the first place that would have been a much more sound business call imo.
If you ever need anything please don't hesitate to ask someone else first.I'm too busyactinglikeI'mnotnaiveI'veseenitall, I was herefirst. -Very Ape- Nirvana

Exactly! Every company would be happy to show off the numbers of subscriptions they have if their game is succesful! WoW and EVE Online (Wich I play now! Fantastic game) are succesful MMO's atm and don't hide their numbers! Why should they??
It only proves more SOE is in a huge spiral that goes down fast! And this downward spiral won't stop if they start communicating with their community! And then I mean REAL communication!

You don't have to be a power-gaming "asshole" to have liked the game pre-CU and NGE. If that's the case, then gGunny is the same as he liked it enough to buy it and play it. As for them never publishing numbers, well, you're (gunny) wrong. They did right after launch. You may just not have seen them, but it happened. Either way, SWG is watered down from what it used to be, and noone can argue that. It's lost a great deal of complexity and players, and most of which aren't power-gaming "assholes".

And to see 5 pages already so fast after this article is posted. Tons of negative posts (including mine)! You don't need to see them in a Negative context ... whining Power Gaming assholes! These are the real SW fans that supported SOE in the beginning! Loved the game for what it was back then!
We are all angry because we saw all our massive hours of hard work spend ingame being destroyed by SOE! That hurted us all the most! Changes 99% of the community didn't want! We, the community, were the players that paid their salary! DONT FORGET THAT!

MxO (Matrix Online) is another example of how things can go wrong! REALY wrong! In this case the game didnt even last for a few months before it was dead! Now in the hands of SOE it is down from 7 to 2 servers wich are hardly populated anymore! SOE had to take over this screwed-up MMO to get a licence from WB for a future (new) MMO release ...ROFLMAO
Sony used to be about the players. The first Everquest was great in the early years. Hell, even SWG used to be awesome. Same with Planetside. Now, it's a rare chance in hell that there's an update for ANY of these games that's to the fans liking. Sony does not listen to the people that play their games. They think they know exactly what we want. The NGE was the dumbest idea their little think-tank has ever had. SWG used to be fun for me. I loved how you could level up ala-UO style, progressing in the things you actually did. It made sense, since "practice makes perfect". Now, I don't want to step on any jedi's feet here, but I think it was even better when after a jedi died, they were deleted. It kept the jedi population low, and if you saw a jedi knight running around, you respected them. Why? Because you knew they went through some tough crap to get that character and evel them up. You also knew they had never died, since they were still around. Then, they said that when you died as a jedi, you just lost points. Okay, that makes it a little less brutal. I can deal with that. Now, you can select a jedi from the start and dying means nothing! Isn't the story of this Star Wars era that jedi are now in hiding or dead since Vader is coming after them? If so, then WHY ARE ALL THESE JEDI RUNNING AROUND? Sony, you ruined the story. You ruined the game. You ruined EVERYTHING just so that you could pile more money in your wallets. I hope this company dies in a fiery blaze.
Ok, here are just few of the things that are just WRONG:
MMORPG.com:
Recently, server population numbers circulated online that someone allegedly uncovered. Can you comment on the accuracy of these numbers?
Casey Keefe:
We never have and never will comment in regards to subscriber and player numbers.
This is just a LIE. Mr Keefe, might I suggest you look through LA's OWN press releases (not to mention media articles), since LA & SOE have both previously discussed the number of subscribers when the numbers were going up & looking good (such as 2 years ago saying SWG had 500k of subscribers). This seems to be selective memory at it's best. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
MMORPG.com:
You acknowledged in your last producer letter that one major flaw with the NGEs introduction was broken content and that it was your goal to fix that. How did this happen in the first place?
Casey Keefe:
No comment? That actually says more than enough about you, your attitude & LA. These things were already said. This type of comment makes me believe the rumors that JT got canned and now LA is trying to reposition. But come on, no comment?
MMORPG.com:
What message do you have to those players who quit Star Wars Galaxies after the NGE update?
Casey Keefe:
After hearing the reasons why players left, we have gathered that feedback and used it in deciding future elements of the game. Even though we arent rolling back the game, we hope to re-introduce some of the older elements that players enjoyed in the context of the new direction of the game, such as what we are aiming to do with the specialization elements. Our hope is that reintroduction of these elements will draw said players back to the game.
ROFL.... You're designing future elements for the game that are like the old version? This is called RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL. How do you justify designing something you already removed, while asking poeple to pay for it, and still call it an addition to the game? Oh right, the cash...
MMORPG.com:
We asked this before and the answer was no. However, today, Id like to re-submit it. Are there any plans for a classic server that runs an older version of the game?
Casey Keefe:
No, and not for business reasons it is impossible in terms of technology and resources.
ROFLMAO!!!!! "it is impossible in terms of technology and resources." OMG, everyone knows this is a complete lie, please. IMO, you have egg on your face, and you're trying to save face by NOT rolling back since it would CLEARLY show that the NGE was the LARGEST mistake EVER made in the Star Wars universe, not to mention the gaming community. And, uhhhh.... The Old SWG would more than pay for the resources.
Well, thanks MMORPG for trying to get them to talk, but it's clear the only thing you can expect from them is the cold-shoulder-damage-control responses. The only question I wish was asked was if JT was canned, but I know you couldn't... (
Thanks MMORPG for the effort.
LA/SOE, get over yourselves... admit a mistake... rollback/revert... stop lieing & denying, the NGE killed SWG...
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
All I can say is I will do whatever I can to never by ANY Sony product again. It might be hard but I will try my best. I will also try to never by ANY Star Wars product again. I will try to see that my children and possibly their children never purchase from these companies.
I was a true Star Wars fan, but this all just seems to play into a bull crap commercial con. Let's face it we all should have known the first time we saw Jar-Jar on the big screen. Much of this problem comes from Lucas.
It wasn't just the credits and the rare loots that were lost due to the expansion. It was also the complex communities and the friendships. I logged in one day and basicly Sony said,"You can't play that game anymore. Here is some junk and by the way we are keeping the money you paid in advance." Immediately people that I had known for years began to vanish.
I can not ponder as to why Sony did what they did. I can ponder that Lucas is an idiot. But all I can do from now on is have my own personal boycott. Thats how capitalism works.

Never, ever in any interview do they ever say anything worth reading. Just business Non-speak bullshit.
Oh well, more non information.
What a joke, the interviewer didnt mention rollback, but HE did... so they know its the only thing that can save SWG..... Pre cu, even pre NGE...
Sigh, i guess they WANT to let SWG die...

In fact, forget the SWG!!!!
Too bad none of the questions got a decent answer. Typical tho.
