Shocked by the amount of ignorance in this thread. The hate for F2P on these forums is getting ridiculous and I haven't read ONE decent argument against these games. Path of Exile, tadaa, awesome F2P, nothing Evil to be found. Pretty much all your MOBAs out there, F2P. Paying 60 bucks up front without knowing about the quality of said game, now that is a scam. Reviews mean nothing and most streamers are getting sponsored so it is clear all games that have a box price are a scam, am I right?
Free trials are more limited then 99% of all F2P games out there, 'hiding' much more of the actual game. f2P needs to convince the player that they need to invest WHILE PLAYING their game. Games with a box price can let you rot right after you bought it, money already earned, screw the actual game.
Just my two cents, not going to convince the haters or whatever but this crusade against F2P is a massive bunch of ignorance and being stuck in the past, give me facts, data, logical reasoning, not this blablablabla on 'being cancerous' and other infantile hyperboles.

First of all, what you might consider good arguments says nothing about what I think good arguments are, so calling my opinion a lie because it differs from yours is a bit childish. Furthermore, the dark Side? I play all kinds of games, b2p, f2p, sub based etc. Console, pc, old, new, there is no 'dark side' here, nice try though in completely ignoring the rest of my post and trying to polarise as much as possible.

You are missing the point. The assumption is that F2P is evil, and anything counter to that is wrong. This isnt the discussion of the merits of any actual game, or even the actual industry. It is simply a groupthink about we can all agree to hate something, making any contradictory information irrelevant.
So your basic quibble is you hate things that ruin immersion... just leave gaming PERIOD at this point then. Everything inside an MMORPG ruins immersion. RPGs as is due to their overall design systems are some of the LEAST immersive games on the planet. Let's see you have quest logs, a ui to access your "bags", a giant chat window (in the case of mmorpgs) a ui to access skills, ui for system settings etc. Your argument doesn't really hold ground based on the fact that there is a lot in place already that ruins immersion. You aren't pulling up your backpack and literally looking inside it. You aren't having to literally remember attacks (it's a key press). So they ad in another UI element. It's not really a big deal and when you think of it as a currency exchange it works just fine on an "immersion" aspect if you can call much of what rpgs/mmorpgs do as immersive gameplay...

Yeah, they're only spending $1 each day (or mebbe $2, who's counting anyways ?), but it's completely optional !

Besides, they don't have to spend it, which means it's perfectly OK to spend it. They will happily spend $20 or $30 per month, because it's optional, but they'll flatly refuse to spend $15 on a monthly sub, because it's forced spending !!!1!!1
Human nature is wonderfully manipulatable, and F2P monetization techniques are finely tuned to exploit it.
If you don't like F2P don't play F2P games.... or choose the sub option, problem solved...There's no reason to act like the Net Nanny telling people what's bad for them...

Your just blowing smoke at everyone, rpgs are far from the least immersive, paying to progress is not immersive at all, actually earning to progress is and that is those rpg elements which you claim are not immersivem inventory management is part of makes makes many rpgs fun, of course this is subjective, but the point here the basis of f2p is pay to win or progress.

Every word written on these forums is opinion, unless the arguments are backed by credible source references.
For instance, you have no idea how many players spend the equivalent of $1 per day voluntarily in F2P games. Neither do I. It wasn't meant literally, of course, it was just hyperbole used to illustrate a point about human behaviour.

Spotty, what percentage of people are spending that $1 or $2 a month? You brought it up and had fun with your mocking little song and dance there about it, so I am interested in what percentage of the playerbase is spending that.
Do you even know, Spotty?

At this point I really should restate what I thought was clear in the OP. This was not intended as an anti-F2P thread, it was intended as anti the specific methods of monetisation that many F2P games seem to be increasingly utilising. There are many F2P games that I feel have good monetisation models. There are others that have gambling boxes; fail states on armour upgrades; pay walls; world-wide announcements when someone wins a shiny; nickel and diming; fake prices in a fake store which do not marry up with the real world price of fake currency bundles, thus compelling people to buy more than they need and then buy yet more to supplement the left over fake coins they have.
These are the types of monetisation that prey on frustration rather than fun. But I am fairly sure that was all clear in the OP.

This thread presents ample reasoning behind the necessity of needing more paygates (as humane as possible) in games so that freeloaders can't get everything for free and game hop.
The current game to get on this trend and do it right is Marvel Heroes with their Team Ups. They are only available at cash shop and you are very very hindered not to have TU's for the end game content.
The problem with free to play to me is that you're no longer selling the game on its merit of being good.
Of the various business models, F2P is the truest to sale based on the merit of being good, as payment is voluntary and only after the player has made an informed decision as to the game exeprience. With box sales and subscription, you pay before you play.
Please, if you plan to provide a counterargument, I ask that you include examples from actual games to support your position and not just fictional scenarios.
Lol I can't provide proof of an opinion. My opinion is that games created to be F2P generally are more generic versions of tried and true games with modifications to push those who buy to buy from cash shops. I could say something like Candy Crush or Neverwinter for MMORPGs. It can be refuted because its opinion.
But you work in business and you know how things go better than most. But you can do google search on F2P and know its marketing strategy doesn't involve top of the line content or design. Its based on selling things in a gaming environment that will support selling things.
I don't see why all these people on here expect everyone to just like F2P anymore than I expect people to dislike it. But I don't see the point in denying the obvious that games aren't charities. If you're not paying up front you're obviously going to change things to entice people to buy after they try it.
A worst case scenario if GTA 5 Online was FTP. Content would instead of being free or bought with in game money they would be sold for real life cash like cars, clothes, hair styles, tattoos etc. The online game may have lives and a time wall after you die a certain amount of times. Missions wouldn't pay much relative to expenses after a certain level so you will have to grind insane amounts or buy cash in the cash shops. Missions would push you into the cash shop. Many missions are in the cash shop. Adverts for the cash shop would be all over as well as a reminders that so and so won Bugatti from a gambling box.
To me the above scenario does lower the quality of gaming for me. Its not circle jerking for other to think the same either.

Uhhh team ups you can buy in game with splinters just like heroes, maybe it use to not be like that but yea you can buy team ups for sure, also there is plenty of endgame content that people can do solo, groups are not always easy to get atleast decent ones so team ups can be needed for certain things. And certain characters with certain builds have a hard time without a team up.
F2P has gone from bad to far worse. I am glad you have mentioned the future because so many posters think it stops here. It won't get any worse and who knows it may get better.
The direction of travel is clear and it has all gone one way, no reason to think there will not be even more game breaking, casino driven ideas.
The current trend in mmos seems to be to foster negative emotions, to rely on envy and frustration to earn revenue, rather than to rely upon positive emotions, such as simple, old-fashioned enjoyment. I hope that it turns out to be a flash in the pan that gutters under player rejection, but alas I think it is set to continue for the foreseeable future.
Please share your thoughts.
Edited to add: At this point I really should restate what I thought was clear in the OP. These are the types of monetisation that prey on frustration rather than fun. But I am fairly sure that was all clear in the OP (alas most people here don't read them, preferring to knee-jerk on the basis of a title or "misunderstand" posts to suit their own viewpoint).
Maybe if you had based your OP on specific examples of mmos rather than using a mobile f2p game as the starting point and then explained with relevant examples how f2p models in mmos were getting worse/ more abusive, you would have gotten a more positive reaction from the readers.

Incorrect, P2P games do force you to pay.
But not for :
- Developers, there laughing all the way to the bank.
- People that play totally for free. It gives them something to do.
- People with a sickness for spending money.
I agree free to play is garbage, but it works for reasons stated above !
