I understand what you're saying but I have to ask, do you think that an artist's complete honesty regardless of the subject matter always sanitizes those things to the point where they're ready for distribution to mass audiences worldwide?

I mean... complete honesty about goatse is still... well you know, frikking gross.

Blade and Soul is "Ecchi", meaning it is not supposed to be pornographic, but is meant to be "suggestive". It is a style that pushes boundaries of what viewers may find acceptable to get people talking about it, as well as for others to feel they can express themselves on all levels without feeling persecuted for what appeals to them in particular.  It is not about objectifying but rather being completely honest about what the artist finds attractive and appealing.
i love ecchi manga or anime as long as they don't have a "loli", i never liked their idea of "lolicon" as much as i never liked those child size races like faerie, gnome, halfling(in some fantasy settings where they look just like a child and sometimes they even have adult size human spouse...) etc.. These are just simply disgusting promotion of pedophilia, i can understand a person being short; like a lot of women in my country are around 5 feet or lower but have big bust size; but these races are at a height below our waste and have body of a child, disgusting implications, curse the people who promote such things. i hoped ncsoft west would remove the lyn race instead of censoring costumes but these people are no better than the freaks they are trying to please...

Nearly all of the Localization area is pretty dumb as well.  Eliminated story, changing character personalities, etc.  The game had established lore and anime that will become irrelevant and make fans confused for the sake of simplicity of story.  Though I'll just wait for official announcements or confirmation on the matter as a whole.
Well, I would agree with that. I'm never for localization. I'm smart, I'm educated enough that if I don't understand something I "look it up".

Heck, I would prefer having the original voices and subtitles for the story. I always watch foreign movies with subtitles, why can't I do so with foreign games?

However the outfits? Couldn't care less unless someone can show how the "whole" of the game will be trashed if we don't have the original outfits.

From what I've gathered in the before-mentioned quote, most of the sexiest / revealing clothing is taken out of the game and put into the cash shop.  So it's not gone, it's just harder to get to and not accessible in game.  Minus any taboo changes such as the small character races having a little more cloth.  This would seem to indicate they want to profit off of what they know they can profit off of and don't give a crap about anything but good PR when it comes to trying to say they're cleaning it up (as most who would be satisfied with that won't even play the game in the first place).  As was said earlier in this thread, they don't care about small little groups that think they have any influence over the populace as a whole.  But it seems like they are using everyone and not taking sides with this (as expected of a company that is good at making money).   People who want pure versions of the game have to pay for what parts there are, and it's mud in the face of those who are against pure versions because they see how much the game profits off of things they don't approve of.  This is actually the smart part of it all in terms of business.  Because it is just all business at the end of the day.

I'm with you on general changes of attire as a whole -- except where it collides with lore.  It may not be present here, but if a race is known for not wearing very much -- a cave man-like or barbarian race (male or female), then I believe it's an infringement on creative rights and works of art (both written and visual in game).  If something is savage, brutal, sexy, etc.  It should be portrayed as such, and will ruin the lore / story with dumbed down tripe.  To allow any sense of "morals" erase it is a travesty along the lines of the ignorance of history in burning down art museums, books, etc. because of a few activists or leaderships getting influence and deciding other cultures are bad.

When doing a bit of research, I've read that the only guidance the localization team had was to basically:

    1)  Don't make the game any easier
    2)  Essentially make the game more accessible to everyone ("welcoming" was a term often used with this desire).

How they (the localization team) came by some of the other things they are doing is mind boggling to me.

It makes me think of this video when it comes to localization:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jafd97yJFOI

Edit:  Have to really input how impressed I am to use one's own culture or groups of people against a community.  Your culture or a group within it says this is wrong, so you have to pay for it to prove them wrong or just get access to it when it's a normal part of the game elsewhere.  The consumerist in me is a little appalled, but this is how you divide and conquer and how easily people are manipulated as a whole.  Few people care about groups, but they're easy targets / pawns to get you more money by giving justification to screw over opposing groups and throw mud back at the first group by turning their hates into capital.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Just wanna add... last weekend playing though the beta there was a cutscene of fully nude main character and that is not the censored version.

Here is the same scene censored.

considering they are now actively censoring the game that will be changed for final no doubt, same as when archeage had a nude npc in beta that was fixed for final launch. They also changed underwear for western players in archeage the same as they are doing here.

Anyway what does that have to do with what I just posted?

    as in:

changing underwear into a sports bra and changing poses from sexualised to "empowering" to pander to western feminists.

    http://i.imgur.com/r9Hrep4.jpg

Personally, I think the NA underwear is a lot sexier. I've never understood why so many Asia fantasy MMOs give the female characters modern lingerie.

That being said, I think players should have access to the Asian underwear option. I also believe that players should be able to chose between default poses. Many MMOs already allow you two or three options.

Most of these controversies over westernization would be completely moot if the developers would just produce options for the west, with the new options the default and the old options still available for those that want them!

They always do lol. They all think they speak for all of us lol.

I don't know if people are stupid or ignorant. the image from OP is posted in a thread on official forum not talking about censorship but something else.

yes our starter outfit is different but the other version for rest of the world is in the game too and i saw it when someone is wearing it during CBT3.

    in a nutsehll  -

costumes won't be censored and will be left untouch

some quests/ lines will be changed to fit western audience

they stated that in livestream and on official forum. if people really are believing costumes is going to be censored seriously don't play the game at all since you are too ignorant/ too easily believe into rumours and stuff.

some dumb threads by people spreading rumours of costumes being censored when its not:

    https://forums.bladeandsoul.com/forums/index.php?/topic/143000-costumes-censored/

heres a official response in regards to costumes on official forum if anyone is interested:

"As I recall, the general question of "no censorship?" and the official response that B&S would not be censored was in regard to the costumes, which underwent heavy censoring in the Chinese version of the game client that the long-time players of B&S are likely most familiar with. As I've stated plenty of times before, the intention of the writing/localization project was never to perform a direct 1-for-1 translation of the source material, but to rework it to suit a broad-scale release to Western audiences. That was the premise the writing team was hired for in the first place. There has been material the writing/localization team was given free reign to edit within the confines of the lore and setting, there has been material we did not wish to edit or add to but were requested to do so by those higher on the development food chain, and there has been material effectively marked as off-limits or only open to minor alterations by those same higher ups and the Devs. That's simply been the nature of the entire project since day one."

    basically -

    costumes won't be censored
quest lines/ text will be changed to fit Western Audience.

if people still really thinks the NA/EU release will have costumes censored please play the game in CBT and find out the difference between censored costumes on China's version then compared them to ours/ Taiwan/ Japan/ Korean for a better understanding.

and for god sake stop spreading rumours/ information which is not true if you never/ bother to play the game.

costumes is really all that matters. i can't believe there are many people mad over a bunch of text that is changed.

One cannot promote pedophilia. No one that was never attracted to children will suddenly become attracted to children because it was 'promoted'. Pedophilia is a wiring issue in the brain. A pedo is a pedo, while a normal person not attracted to children will always be so. I have no issue's with what artist choose to put down in fiction because it in no way can influence the changing of someone's sexual desire. A loli race while might be disturbing to look at for most of us(and I would never play one as a choice in a game), doesn't do anything to promote pedophilia.

I'm beginning to think that Asian RPGs must suck for actual game play. If all people can do is bitch about little animated girls wearing gym shorts in America instead of combat-lingere. Are the publishers taking away the only "redeeming" factor in these games or something?

LOL, it sure does seem that way. IF a game is good I do not see how this would make much difference in that at all.

I personally hate the Asian leathery big boob thong art and high heels that is so commonly seen. It kills the immersion for me, especially if I have to play a gender locked class. I'm all for the censorship "localization", and yes I agree it's totally based on market research and western aesthetic preference. Bring on the shorts!!!

So ... Looking at the picture ... They're "censoring" it by showing more skin? O.o

Also, this is far from "censorship"; however, the rampant desire to scream and shout this buzzword in lieu of what it really is (catering to their market) is comical. The term you're searching for is "localization".

Looks better after "censorship", IMO. They're right, a martial artist wouldn't wear lingerie into battle; the sports shorts and bra reveal more skin and provide a much more "combat oriented" feel. The changes reflect Western values, tastes, and expectations far more than the original; it will certainly be less "villainized" than the original.

So, if you mean censoring that they tailoring their game to fit their players (potential players) to make their money.  Then I guess you can use the word.  However, I won't let my kids draw things on my walls, so I must also be censoring.

She's not completely incorrect, a number of pre-WoW MMOs did tend to have more non-combat elements and did tend to attract players that were not that into combat.

Though if that's the problem then adding more non-combat content would be the solution... Oh... but they're just translating the game not adding anything of substance...  So instead we'lI just get everything edited by a feminist, that will totally be an OK substitution...

The part where they were editing the story to remove any moral ambiguity was a knife through my heart, but I understand... it's meant for an Americans audience after all.
