I got repulsed from Wildstar since its F2P way is similar to SW:ToR aka, unplayable,

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! No, seriously. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

You must have not played either SWTOR or WildStar. Seriously!

I mean both have onerous restrictions or "decisions", while being very generous in other areas. The overlap between these good and bad areas between the games is almost zero.

MOBA = Multiplayer Online Battle Arena.
    Are these game multiplayer? Yes.
Do they have online connectivity? Yes.
Do you battle in them? Yes.
Are they in an arena setting as oppose to an open world? Yes.
They check all the boxes for a MOBA just not a DOTA style MOBA.

I agree with the ESO choice. I can't think of a single current mmo that doesn't have a laundry list of woes but ESO offers the most solid "modern" mmorpg elements of any of the current crop I can think of.

Not going into the huge list of issues I could speak of with the game, there is 2 major reasons why this game is becoming extremely solid:

    1. Potential: Everybody over uses this term but I mention it because Zenimax has delivered a couple of dlc's now and Orsinium alone reveals to me these guys are on the right track with their game. Vet levels are finally confirmed to be removed and key dlc's long promised on next up as well. The B2p transition was a long hard wait but it seems their fast development is back in gear. Potential appears to be a promising term because there is evidence to support it.

    2. B2p model still allows solid in game experience: I cannot stress enough how important this is. Swtor is completely ruined by their model for me. Lotro was as well along with Champions Online which are the 3 games that last took up most of my time. I feel I was forcefully ejected from those games by their f2p transition. ESO can be played without ever opening the cash shop. There is virtually no barrier to play without a sub if willing to purchase the dlc's of your choosing. Don't want the more pvp oriented Imperial City? Don't buy it. Want to take one character through the Orsinium story and not bother to do it again? Pay a one month's sub. The b2p model is flexible and not tied to progression. Loot enters the market without barriers (although limits craft choices in some ways but there is plenty of core craft content without dlc's).

What would ruin this game is a f2p transition so I hope they never go that route. Having to at least purchase the core game brings in players with a level of commitment that still provides some sense of community preservation. Social features tend to improve instead of decline despite the odd guild structure I am finding ESO to be a very strong RP destination and there are long standing market guilds still around that are very active.

If Zenimax continues the design philosophy of opening up their game away from the more linear progression they started out with I believe their game will continue as a very solid AAA mmo choice in a landscape where such games are on a decline.
Yes they are removing vet levels, problem is they said that 2 years ago, or at least getting close to it. After this long you would expect the vet levels to already be gone. Also saying it is a solid game, all I can say once they fix a lot of the bugs and other issues (from beta) with the game then yes it will be solid. But 2 years, they should of already been gone.
Read what I said: " I can't think of a single current mmo that doesn't have a laundry list of woes ..." and "Not going into the huge list of issues I could speak of with the game ...".

Please learn to read before replying with pointless posts ignoring that I may very well already be aware of every issue you mention which in fact I am which is painfully clear in my post history here, on massivelyop and on the official forums ... all of which share the same user name so I can be tracked easily.

My comments reflect the very current snapshot of the game which is the only way to review something as all else stems from emotion that blinds you from what exists in front of you.

Also what is your point? Do you have another mmo you wish filled this slot? Are you trying to change my opinion? You just want to complain? Would of, could of, should of isn't an argument to be made here. Only what is is up for debate.

Didn't MMORPG.com just say WoW or SWTOR was the best MMO of 2015 a couple of months ago? Remember when some posters started putting up their own "lists" so their favorites were number one? Consistency is king and I'm starting to notice it lacking more and more with this site. :(

Congrats ZOS, ESO deserves this and more.  I highly recommend the game to anyone that hasn't jumped in yet.  And in case no one's mentioned it above, you can pick up a PC copy today at G2A for about $15.

Thanks for the nod to ESO, started playing a month ago and have been pleasantly surprised. I think it needs a second look by most. I played beta and hated it, but I'm a big ol' fanboy now.

Doesnt bother me that ESO got the win , i would favor FF14 not by much but just enough to give it the win .. Both are great games .. Curious to see the Forum members results next week..

Question for admin: are the runners up in any order there or is it just randomly thrown in there?
  • CyraelCyrael Member UncommonPosts: 239
A fairly solid list, but best MMORPG still goes to Eve Online for me. I keep waiting for something else in the genre to surpass it, but I'm still waiting. I also would have given the runner-up for best RPG to Xenoblade Chronicles X. Fallout 4 is lacking - broken stealth, half-finished gameplay systems, inconsistent depth and all of the usual Bethesda fails.

2014 prior to the launch of WS and ESO: mmorpg.com: "subscriptions making a comeback?"
2015 after WoW's decline and the news that subs will no longer be reported "will WoW go f2p?".
Subs are not extinct but the shift means that many games now have - pretty much - the same business model.

Another trend that has continued: mmo being/becoming solo-centric and single player games embracing multiplayer elements.

Combine the two and it begs the question: are the categories "right"?

Sad to see HOTS edge out SMITE. At least SMITE was runner up and not LOL or DOTA, so props there.
  • CervaniCervani Member UncommonPosts: 21
Meh, I agree with all of them except for ESO and maybe HotS. Hell, the only reason I disagree with HotS is because of the comment that Blizzard knows how to water a genre down to the "fun" parts.

As for ESO, sorry but I just can't agree. I would have accepted FFXIV or GW2, but not ESO. Not only is it one of the most bland MMOs I've ever seen, but I do sense a bit of favoritism towards it due to whatever reason. Yes it's improving, but to the point that it overtakes MMOs like FFXIV or GW2 which had smash hit expansions? Yeah gonna have to say no on that.

Best MMO of 2015 – The Elder Scrolls Online / Runners Up – WildStar, Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, FFXIV

"As we stated at the start of this award season, 2015 was all about the existing games getting better, delivering content, and expanding both in terms of content and player-base."

Maybe it's just me, but couldn't an MMO that released in 2015, at least get a mention?

Nah a couple of months ago they've said ESO was the best MMO in 2015, I mean at least it was on the #1 spot.

However yes ESO was not on the list of the 35 Greatest MMOs of all time, which was a huge fail.

Too bad the list wasn't for MMORPGs, perhaps then EVE might have been mentioned.

MOBA is probably too generic a term, as other games such as CS:GO, World of Tanks, Teamfortress 3 etc, would also fall into the category of being a MOBA under those terms, and yet shooters and tank simulators are very different games than the 'lane' games that LoL represents, perhaps MOBA needs to be broken down into seperate categories, as technically, even games like BF3 fall under its heading.

Heroes of the Storm dumbing down League while still being 1/10th as popular is not deserving of an award. And Smite is light years behind the top 3. The main thing this list shows is how disappointing 2015 really was, especially for MMO's.

you are talking about paragon without any kind of gameplay, just because you dont like paladins, atleast for me from what i can see in the cbt paladins is the best moba/shooter right now, even better than the overhyped overwatch from blizzard...

Cyberpunk will release 2017 at best if not 2018 so why it's in Most Anticipated 2016. Also Witcher 4 will be new story arc like new Mass Effect, that was the end of Geralt trilogy so we can expect new main character and maybe even full sandbox game where we can create our own Witcher (i expect Geralt cameo anyway).
