Seriously, I was just scrolling down the list of highly rated and released MMO's and none of them sounded appealing. Like literally every single one of them was just giving me a sour feeling and making my head spin.

One of the top rated "MMO's" on this site right now is SMITE. SMITE is a moba!! Its not even an MMO!

ESO is repetitive, FF14 is nothing but grind, Secret World is all mystery no substance, Guild Wars 2 is just Meh.

Literally nothing, you know what I want?

whats stopping you from doing that in Rift, or GW2 or even WoW?
No offense MMOx but that's exactly what you cannot do in the examples you gave. Rift is microscopic, GW2 is non-sequential but cartoony and gives you either easy PvE, frenetic Dungeon action gaming, or PvP. WoW is so simple and silly looking as to induce a sugar stomach ache and diaper rash simultaneously.

The old games listed by OP had mystique, complexity, and the hope that over time these things would deepen in both the games listed, and those to come. This is a dark age for the V-world, a time where the non-market artistic lessons of the past have been burned by cash-grabbing corporate vandals. The console kids have risen to adulthood and see no reason why the modern adventure should not be modeled after mario or zelda, knowing no better and wishing for nothing more.

MMORPG as we used to know and love is indeed dead. We have something new and different now but its doesnt have the same gameplay.

Who are "we"? I think the MMORPGs that i found mildly interesting is now improved a great deal into games with more convenient features.

It is great that they are no longer shackled by the old gameplay. If I have to wait for boat rides in modern MMOs, do you think i will still be here?

Metallica made three good albums, Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets.

Since then all they have made is shit albums, just like SOE made shit games after EQ2.

Metallica isnt a good band, SOE wasnt a good company, it doesnt mean everything they made was shit, but the most recent majority is.

Theres really no explaining to do here.

Very few people want to head out into the world to seek adventure and danger, to explore, to die and feel the pain of death.  People want to be an epic hero from day one, fast travel all over the game world, join instant queues for gear runs, participate in the great zerg that is the zone event to level and visit the cash shop for boosters and hats.

You my friend like me are looking for a new game that doesn't cater to the above, something with a fixed payment model that puts everyone on a level playing field and how hard you play determines what you get out of it.  I'm not aware of any being made besides maybe Pantheon.

The game you are thinking of is, The Repopulation. Its feels like i'm playing a old school game. The game doesn't hold you're hand. Its a true open world MMO

It is also primarily a PvP game and has a FPS mode. Nope IMHO not an old schools MMORPG at all.

Better try Darkfall: Unholy Wars before they pull the plug on it. Or one of the old Darkfall reboots.
DF: Unholy wars is trash compared to the original, while better than alot of the mmos on the market at the moment it pales in comparasion to the original darkfall and currently we are still waiting for the community companies to purchase the liscense to DFO, which knowing Aventurine could be years.

That said, I agree that there are only sandbox games on the horizon that look promising(like it was 2-3 years ago) but most of them were ended up indie turds and lackluster. It seems these days we are waiting for mmos more than playing them. Rather not boot up old titles like AoC.

If the boat ride is fast and entertaining (like a lot of scripted events that are shown only once), then may be.

    Otherwise, count me out.

Literally, has a very specific meaning.  Literally, there are many MMOs out there to play.  It would be more accurate to say that there are literally no MMOS that I think are good..  or something to that affect.

Normally, I don't get into semantic discussions, because I think people use them to justify their reasoning.  In this case, I've decided to, because I think it highlights an issue that I have with the reasoning some people use.

Because a person doesn't care for something doesn't mean that the feeling/belief holds true for everyone.  One man's trash is another man's treasure comes into play.  It's just as valid to say, "I don't think there are any good MMOs'  It would be a accurate and leave the over geralizations where they belong.  They cloud the discussion.

I self identify as a monkey.

There are many to play, but nothing I want to play for a long time. That being said I've decided to channel my energy into learning unity and reliving my childhood by creating a simple 2d game.

Hell, if I can create something along the lines of Secret of Evermore + Dungeons and Dragons as a barebone prototype. I'll be happier than whoever gets to throw it in Angelica Ebbi every night.

We need innovation, we need to stop stagnating and bring back the things weve lost before we reach the MMOPOCALYPSE.
Bringing back old ideas is NOT innovation.

May be devs look into new types of online games. MOBA is a great success example. Sure, something new may be interesting, but why go back to old designs?

Uh, science is chock full of older ideas being repurposed, re-designed, or adapted with new technologies.  Often to very useful purpose.

Similar thing with entertainment.  I don't go see one zombie or vampire movie and then go 'Seen one, seen them all'.   There can be enjoyable depth within a trope or genre.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

I check this website often but- I made an account simply to reply to this-
I feel your pain I am in the same situation for the past 3 years, every new mmo has been a disappointment some more than others.
Archeage, Wildstar, ESO, TOR, ETC of the new ones.

On the horizon for my self right now I am looking at Star Citizen (will be happily surprised if it pulls off), Black Desert (will probably fail but you never know) and Lost Ark which may never come here for years.

Not much to hope for it is very bleak, I have been playing mmos since 2002/3 and its the only game genre I can really dig my self into, shooters and stuff dont do anything for me yet every new mmo manages to surprise us with ways to fail. Old ones turn into cash cows. New ones are either p2w or ran by morons.

I'd say the only decent mmo around atm is gw2 yet it really is not my style, its a big megaserver instanced thing for me those type of games shouldn't even be called mmos.

I quit eve (been off and on since 04) 1.5 years ago but if black desert fails I may go back to it as it is as others have said the only real mmo around these days that stays true to its self.

*I hear you, but Black Desert has the stench of Archeage all over it. I pre-ordered and RU beta'd the hell out of that, hoping against hope it would be the one. It turned out to be shite like the rest of them. When I tried Black Desert I got sucked in, but only to find out about the labor points like system that's in place, the easy griefing, the limitations. And the fact that they don't have any pve end game and largely don't even know wtf kind of game they want it to be.

It's shaping up just to be a good looking money grab just like the rest of the trash out right now.

**I'm super grumpy because I'm staring at my char in ESO and mad because the grouping sucks, it's buggy, the LFG tool doesn't even work, and it gets so boring after a while and yet I want desperately to play something.**

Well we are consumers after all, think of your super market, if it suddenly most of the food you boght got changed into beans and carrots, except you don't like beans and carrots so you are abit lost, the pizza that you so love the only ones available are well out of date or frozen rubbish.

As a consumer I am not happy with the market, I only continue playing because 'i have to buy food' or in reality I am an mmo gamer.

If it continues for another few years though I will end up quiting, only so much crap I can handle afterall. Maybe I'll get an outdoor hobby instead lmao!

But yeah.. MMOs are bad atm and I don't need to feel appreciative for what they are right now, people should strive to do better and whats on offer right now is pretty crap.

I can respect things like GW2 and EVE but I am looking for something else, a fantasy type that leans heavy on pvp but not JUST pvp.

I played conquer online 10 years ago it was right in so many ways. (bad in many too though hah)

Tried Blade & Soul, Starforge and Black Desert. All did not "click" with me although i have to say that Black Desert looks the most interesting. So i just kept playing FFXI which for me is still the best MMORPG out there.

The current mmos are just as amazing as back when I played UO and EQ1 in 1998/1999.

if that is the case, then the mmo genre as it is now, is no longer for you or those trying to cling to the past. I personally have moved on to games like POE and marvel heroes(big arpg fan). with console games here and there but arpg is my bread and butter genre. Time to look for other genres to play. there are nice srpgs and jrpgs out there as well(sword coast, pillar, civ games, and the such)
