Just a cheap gimmick, not a serious proposition at all, and certainly no good for gaming. Sure it costs $30 to buy, but unless your going to spend another $1000 on a smart phone powerful enough to work it, then your out of luck. Devices that are just 'holders' for smartphones are really not the way forward, especially when you consider how often you have to replace a worn out smart phone these days, not to mention having that kind of a device so close to your head for hours on end, pretty sure there are some health concerns there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone_radiation_and_health
but regardless of that I am glad that people are starting to debate over WHICH VR solution is the best or will survive rather than if any of them will, that is progress
However you need to spin it.
until Sony started becoming more prevalent in their PR on VR I NEVER head a critic even use the phrase 'successful' in regards to even a remote chance.
we shall see if a VR device that is as good as the DK1 made several years ago will be 'more successful' then a 3rd generation later VR headset.
In the meantime more TV stations are getting on board with VR (generally speaking not getting product specific here)
People are still in the debate stage if VR will succeed at this point.
I don't think it will succeed.
I guess it depends on what you see as a success.
I am curious to hear your definition
I know the question isnt directly to me but I would say its already a success given the following:
1. The amount of money that has been invested in it is off the charts 2. The number of large powerful companies from Facebook to Disney that are involved in it. 3. The fact that every time a VR device goes on sale it sells out. 4. GDC last year had the majority of its floor space dedicated to VR (if you factor our Microsofts floorspace)
however to be fair that doesnt represent a retail success but thus far there is pretty much not a single solitary fact that can be put on the table that suggests VR is failing. The failing part is all speculation based on no data to back it up.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Personally if I where Sony I would try to stop drawing attention that you only have 36 million PS4s in the market right now. That is not really a large number in the context of what we are talking about here.
i may be wrong but the number of gamers with PCs than can run occulus rift and are actually interested in it (and its price) is much lower than 36 million, so i dont see the problem here. The PS VR will run on every single PS4 out there.
The PS2 sold (in its entire lifetime of 12-14 years) around 150 million units. PS4 only has 2 years since it launched, so 8 years from now the PS VR will still run on it (if its popular enough to survive than long) and the PS4 owners number will be much much higher.
On a side note, i doubt VR in general will be a huge success. It'll probably flop in a few years or less.

The number of people who can run the Oculus Rift DK1 which is the same technology level as the PS VR is higher than 36 million by a large margin.
oculus Rift Dk1 was made 2 years ago (I think ) and as the same resolution as the PS VR

I see what you are both saying I just come in from it as a different perspective so i dont notice the comments of Sony really being more of a jab at Xbox I see it as a statement against Oculus in which case it makes my me confused because in the PC universe its not a large number
Why is it a small number compared to the PC universe? every time you put the same multiplayer game on both platforms the PC version always has less people and nobody says "in the console universe, the PC playerbase is not a large number"

If anything could kill VR it will be motion sickness. Although the companies don't really talk about it, it's a big problem for a lot of people. Just Google it and see the list of articles about what happens when you do VR for extended periods of time. It seems you need a chair or platform to help the inner ear orientate you with the movements or you could get sea sick. Now that's a show stopper.

motion sickness and ease of use.
The later is why I think John Carmacks desire to focus on mobile was a good one. In fact, I think there is a good chance that VR in general will be a lager hit for narrative stories (aka TV, movies etc) than for games. namely because I have a flight stick in my closet that is easy to set up by comparision to VR but I cant be bothered with pulling it out just for specific games. If you think all 150 mil steam users can run VR at 1080p at 30 fps then you've never looked at the steam hardware surveys.
It doesn't really matter which platform has a bigger audience. All that matters is if there are VR games worth playing (and no, please don't post that stupid wiki list of hot garbage, or of EVE arena dogfighting Valkyrie - they're not gonna cut it). As far as I can see, having Sony or MS jump in the fray is for the best. If they can get some popular titles into VR, then it's much more likely to find a foothold as a legit gaming peripheral.
Also, can we stop with the whole "VR sells out!" narrative. Has it sold 30 million units? Something that's being claimed is "not that much"? No? You don't know because they haven't released actual numbers? Then shut the hell up about it. It doesn't matter if something sells out, that tells us very little other than demand was higher than supply at the time of offering.
It doesn't tell us how widespread the demand is, it doesn't tell us how large the supply was, it just tells us one was higher than the other. Apple watch sells out! Surface Book sells out! Xbox one sells out! PS4 sells out! Lots of stuff sells out, esp new stuff, surprise surprise.
Gamers will always go where the games are. It doesn't matter if you can do 100000 FPS at 20k resolution, if you don't have the goods, then no one cares. Am I saying OcVR won't have them? No. Am I saying Sony VR will? No. I have no clue what's going to happen, but I do know one thing, and that's VR can only benefit from having Sony and their playstation ecosystem as a part of it.

so if I look at the survey are you saying that there are a large number of PCs that cant do 1080p at 30fps? are you SURE about that?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. A very large number of them would not be able to run VR headsets at 1080p 30 fps. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Please read everything i said, twice too. 125 million steam accounts doesnt mean that 125 million people have PCs than can run Occulus, you can bet that much less than half that number can run occulus. PS VR is not just the same tech as Occulus, it has lower requirements for obvious reasons (PS4 being less powerful than an Occulus ready PC.
You just want to make it sounds that every single PC gamer has an Occulus ready PC regardless of being a steam user or not. Steam is a free platform full of free games. 125 million active accounts means nothing. Non steam gamers play mmos that are not on steam, what makes you thing all of them also have beast occulus ready machines?
your are willing to bet on your own opinion. Do you think a PC that can only run 1080p at 30fps on a regular monitor will also run Occulus at 1080p 30fps? you just killed your own post there.
Im not saying PS VR will be the big thing or better than anything, just in case. But you seem to think the PS4 will only sell the 36+ million units its already sold. Like i said, the PS2 sold 155 million units in 13 years. PS4 sold 36+ in 2 years. That number will only keep growing and the PS VR (if its successful) will still run on day one PS4s.
Stop trying too hard to make it sound like PSVR will not go anynwhere but OC will.
PS VR is designed for a single hardware, it will run on every single PS4 out there. That alon makes it very accessible. OC is designed for beast machines, it will not run on every gamer' PC out there, much less if its a non gaming PC that wants to use OC for other things.

Lets break this to one item at a time.
Do you think that 100% of Steam users can run 1080p at 30fps because I think its around 100% or very close. in the PC universe 1080p at 30fps is very low, as in near Chromebook low.
1080p at 30fps is what the PS4 can do WITHOUT factoring in VR. apples to apples.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

1, what do you mean when you say 'vr headsets'. what we know is that PS4 can do at best 1080p at 30fps WITHOUT VR. so we have to compare apples to apples not apples to apples plus VR on one side and not the other side.
2. I think my $200 chromebook I bought 2 years ago can do 1080p at 30fps for a PC that is very low
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

You think!, that is your opinion right there, key word, you think. No facts there.
The Last of Us and Killzone, some of the best looking PS4 games run at 1080p 60fps. Your point? Dark Souls 2 (the newer version) runs at 1080p 60fps as well. Your point?
We are not comparing hardware PSVR vs OC here, obviously OC is more powerful so dont mix it. And designed for a much more powerful machine, that alone lowers its playerbase. You were basically pretending that because PS4 have only sold 36 million units the PS VR doesnt have a chance, like that number is not going to grow beyond that.

1. PSVR should not be comparing itself to OR because its not apples to apples. They should be comparing themselves to OR DK1 NOT OR CV1. comparing Sony VR to OR CV is being EXTREEMLY disingenuous. 2. I was not aware that Sony games could do 60fps at 1080p I have been misinformed. If I can get your claims verified

If I'm not mistaken the PS4 VR comes with a power/processor block that attaches to the PS4. I'm not trying to knock you or VR, i'll be picking up a headset once they prove themselves to not just be a quick gimmick and have a good library of games that i'm interested in. I would be interested to hear what games your chromebook runs at 1080p 30fps

1. What I havent read anywhere is a confirmation from Sony is that the price they are quoting contains the price of this magic processor which magically and without cost brings the headset to that of the same as the OR CV1 release which needs a $1500 computer. See anything whatsoever odd about this magic box?
2. I was being sarcastic when I said chromebook. Let me try to be a little more specific. I think 100% of the computers that run Steam can handle most games at 1080p at 30fps not factoring in the need for VR. is that clear, exact and specific engouh?

You are the one comparing PSVR to OR, im talking about the number of people who can properly run both on their respective platform.
I specifically said those 3 games because they do run like that. The majority so far are locked at 30fps for whatever reason, maybe because the PS4 is not old enough and going to 60fps later in its lifespan will be consider an improvement in the games through out its life span (my assumption here)

you should know that is just a marketing stunt.
There you go again with the 36 million units sold. Lets hope VR is successful and we will see in 5 years from now where that 36 million end up and the PSVR running on all of them making it more accessible to people, while the OR still requires beast machines to run, making its adoption slower.
Just to be clear, Im not on anyone's side here, i wont be using PSVR or OC, for other reasons. I hope both succeed with their own audience.

2. I think my $200 chromebook I bought 2 years ago can do 1080p at 30fps for a PC that is very low

2. I was not aware that Sony games could do 60fps at 1080p I have been misinformed. If I can get your claims verified

2. I was being sarcastic when I said chromebook. Let me try to be a little more specific. I think 100% of the computers that run Steam can handle most games at 1080p at 30fps not factoring in the need for VR. is that clear, exact and specific engouh?

I specifically said those 3 games because they do run like that.
The majority so far are locked at 30fps for whatever reason, maybe because the PS4 is not old enough and going to 60fps later in its lifespan will be consider an improvement in the games through out its life span (my assumption here)
I think although I dont know that the vast majority of all so called gaming PCs which far execed 36 million can run the OR dk1 which is 1080p
