Go play ultima online and play on the server siege perilous.  If you are a hardcore pvp player like that or want to be that would be a good place to be.

EvE :) .. kill anywhere, be killed anywhere, and riches to be had if you kill  the right person :)

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.
Use this code for 21days trial in eve online https://secure.eveonline.com/trial/?invc=d385aff2-794a-44a4-96f1-3967ccf6d720&action=buddy

How about one that's fun for beginners, and where you won't get ganked every other minute while you learn how to play, level up, and gear up?

I would echo the "real life" quotes...and then I would simulataneously echo the sentiments that people who SAY they want this don't REALLY want this...They just want a venue where they can demonstrate how h4rdc0r3 they are...as if anyone cares.  They don't seem to realize that the world has moved on, and that there are enough people on the net nowadays that no one gives a shit if your virtual avatar is a serial killer.

PVPs suck because they are not balanced and fair.  PVPers say they don't want that.  But the great majority of them have no idea how to play a good villain that can actually make things more dynamic and interesting for heroes in the game world as opposed to just being griefers, sadists, thugs, and bullies.  They think all that matters is that they can kill other people.  Without much risk, rhyme or reason and without consequence.  People who think they can or want to do that in real life are often in prison or heading there.  If they're not dead already, in a gang or mob, or some sort of fraternity that can protect them and cover up their tracks.

EVE is really the only real choice, however I hope your a huge fan of depth and spreadsheets. It's actually really good though if you think you can enjoy the combat.

Can someone actually start EVE now and not just become easy prey for the veteran players?

Mmm, there are ways now to catch up using in-game currency for skill points, but it would be hard for a new player to make that sort of money.

It would require the person trying to put forth a ton of effort and join the game with a friend that already knows their way around EVE or join a corporation that's willing to teach them (which there are a ton)

I would say that the MMO is certainly worth trying....even if the new player wasn't planning on staying long term. EVE is the kind of MMO where we may not see another of its kind to come out for years. Personally I had a great time on it, but I also realized it wasn't really the MMO for me, even though I wanted it to be very badly.

(however I do still play from time to time, but you would REALLY have to dedicate yourself to it if you wanted something more)

    It's certainly something else.

No way, totally impossible, can't be done, forget about EVE.

Well, I could download the 14-day trial, but I don't know if (actually really don't think) it would be worth my time.  I doubt I'm going to want to pay for the full version afterward.  Not saying they should have free-to-play.  I think I hate, despise, loathe so-called free-to-play now.  It's a greedy and cynical way to fleece players of more money than they would pay for monthly subscription, that's all.  Anyway, space is not really my thing.  Not that I hate space, but it has just never interested me as much as medieval fantasy or historical settings.  And btw, all space sci-fi is pretty much fantasy until humans build lunar and Martian bases, and/or start building ships which can transverse deep space.  Probably not really feasible w/out a hypothetical/fictional warp drive or hyper speed engine.  I'm certainly not gonna hold my breath waiting for mortal humans to accomplish this.

So, you don't REALLY want forced PvP where you can kill someone anywhere then... at least not until YOU become capable of killing people anywhere.  THEN it would be fine, but before that, not so much, hmm?  :D

    Touché, nice one

OP, check AoC. Roll a character on Crom, learn the ropes, then go over to Rage (open world ganking corpse looting bullsh.t ruleset).
But to be honest, as I've heard AoC pvp is pretty empty - like all pvp should be, by default

The game the OP seeks has recently folded up shop after a VERY short life span "Wizardry online",so obviously there is no market for such a game.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Yes. You have to make peace with the idea of not skipping hull sizes though. If you start now and stick with frigates you'll be able to be useful in days, decent in a month, good in three and have close enough to perfect skills in half a year in the racial frigates of your choice including one or two t2 (advanced) hulls you might choose. What this means is that you'll be as good as anyone else in the game in terms of skills in situations involving frigs, and frigs are always useful. At this point, when you have perfect Navigation, Gunnery or missile, fitting and tank type of your choice skills then moving up hull sizes is a breeze, you'll have the skills to make full use of them compared if you were to get into them early. The hard part there is only going to be your main gun size for that hull.

There's two things you should do, first is to learn how to fight, because it's not just locking a target and clicking orbit and turning your weapons on. Best way to do this if they're still around is joining my boys in Red Federation or Blue Republic as part of RvB. You'll learn how to fly frigs there for sure, but it's education by getting many ships blown up around you so you'll need an income stream. Using someone's free trial code for a 21 day trial creates a plex for them if you then buy the game, and most people that mention this part of it to you will split the isk value, 50/50 was a common split when I played.

The second thing is to take time at the start and create several free trials so you know exactly which race has the ships that appeal to you most and what weapons you want to use if there are options in the race. The total amount of skills in eve is daunting, but if you were to learn them all most of your time would have been spent on horizontal progression (getting skilled up in other racial hulls and weapon types) rather than vertical progression where you start at crap and move on up to good. While it may seem you're setting yourself back, spending more time at the start making sure you know what you want to fly will save time in the end when you don't change your mind about things.

Death Penalty and PVP shouldn't never be in the same sentence.  It refines PVP communities down to a few hardcore. Getting back into the fight should never be a chore to gain progress back. That just bleeds players from a PVP game in the long run

My problem with Darkfall combat is the ridiculous melee 180 awings, it's pretty dumb to see heavy armor 2 handed sword guy jumping and doing 180 swings like a badly overacted  broadway show. Yeah no thanks.

Agreed, though I've played the crap out of that game it always bothered me that people in full plate really have no movement restrictions, and that mages wearing cloth still had too much armor and survivability for the amount of ranged damage they could unleash.

They tried to fix that in UW but the problem is that as in most full loot PvP games players come then leave then all your left with are the original DF players that want to wear heavy armor and swing a two handed sword around like its a toothpick, so all that class balance got ripped out.
