MS needs X number of its customers on windows 10 to hook developers to want to create programs that are cross platform. PC, Xbox and Tablet. Once they get what they need it make sense they shut down the free upgrade and make people pay for it. You will wish you upgraded for free when nothing is supported under Windows 10, updates and software.

Windows 10 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Why on earth would I even use win10 It's crappy as hell, I'm fine with win 7 and dx12 sure thats nice in about 5 years when more games uses it and by then a new windows will go live hopefully better than win10.
fyi there is no "new windows in 5 years time". Win10 is it; the last one. What you will have in 5 years time is ... Win10 with 5 years of updates. Now maybe they will still be offering free upgrades in 5 years time. I think they are going to draw a line under the free roll out though, decide that if someone doesn't want a free upgrade over the course of a year then its simply not worth the effort of pushing it anymore.
Not aware of any Win7 games that don't run on Win10 either.
It almost feels like these people defending 10 work for MS lol, but this a more sinister reason as to why I wont be engaging in 10 and pertains to the future of pc gaming in general.

Its not just about being able to run the same game or software on all your devices. Its about software developers looking at, say making a game. Knowing that they can target a larger number of people because between PC, Xbox and tablet they are all using the same OS. Means more money for them and means Windows will be getting more developers on board. 1 OS means more money for MS and for developers. Windows 7 and 8.1 will be dropped very fast by both MS and developers.
I plan to buy a copy of Win10 for a whole new computer and keep Win7 on my current computer to use as a back up. So I'm not really upgrading, just starting over from scratch.

Not sure if you know this but your windows 7 rig will run faster with windows 10.
There are people who still refuse to use ATMs or pay bills online so not surprised that many are hesitating to upgrade now. That said, Win10 is pretty crappy right now. The benefits for upgrading are in it's future updates, not now. Trying to convince those who do not have it for what it offers now is futile. Explaining the virtues and benefits of having it going into the future is a much better way to go about convincing those that don't have it to get it, than trying to convince them that their experiences navigating the computer tech world will improve to any noticeable degree right now. It won't. Win10 is a crappy, bug-ridden, heavy-handed, mess at the moment. It will no doubt get better, but it sucks pretty bad right now.

In this area Apple has kicked MS butt. Its proven keeping all Apple products on the same OS keeps developers happy and developers keep supporting their products this way. That keeps Apple customers buying Apple. Because this is a proven track record, you are right. MS is putting a line in the sand. MS wants the depth Apple has fostered so well.

Thats the thing. Windows isnt making any more new OS. Windows 10 is it, from here forward its only updates. Much like how Apple does things, free upgrades for current customers.
