Fallout 4 Base building was a addon to anyone in the know of the game. they just released the developer tools in a easy consumer version so they could snag a larger audience
which has been around for at least 10 years if not more, but now they do it.
I say the reason they decided to add it as a game feature can be pathed directly to minecraft in the manner I just did.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Sean are you talking about pong? or pac man? some sort of reference would give us a clue as to your direction
?????
in fact i would go as far as to say if it was not for Minecraft and the indie games that followed it (like 7 days to die, forest, ark etc meaning 'building') that Fallout 4 never would have had base building
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
People really are their own worst enemies when it comes to building hype, or selling themselves on the game they imagine in their own head, rather than the one actually being sold to them. Cognitive dissonance sets in *hard* with many of them; they're so convinced that their imagined version of the game is "what it will be" that they completely ignore direct evidence/quotes from the developer themselves stating otherwise. And then they take to the forums crying "Betrayal!" in true Spoony style, because the game they got isn't the game they imagined - despite all evidence it wouldn't be, well in advance.
One example of this I can give off the top of my head: FFXIV going F2P. There's been this myth floating around with FFXIV for a long time now that Yoshi-P (Producer and Director of XIV) has said he would rather shut the game down than go F2P. People have repeated this as though it's historical fact. Yet, it was never said. Quite to the contrary, what he *has* stated, unequivocally, is that if/when they should find the change to a F2P model appropriate for the game, they will make the change. He's stated it would be a mistake for people to believe F2P is off the table.
I've quoted and cited those statements for people, many times. Doesn't matter, I've still seen the same people repeating the same mantra afterward. They're clinging to what they want to believe, and ignoring what they're actually being told.
So guess what's going to happen when ever XIV does go F2P (and it certainly will at some point, I believe)? Inevitably, all those people who sold themselves on this "it will never go F2P" myth will cry foul. All the people who believed the lie without doing any research themselves will cry "Liar!", and Yoshi-P and SE will be attacked for doing something they'd said was a possibility all along.
Now, on the other hand, there are developers out there who don't help when they allow these myths/theories to persist without clearing it up, or use (deliberately) vague descriptions/terms in promoting the game, leaving those gaps for others to fill in to begin with. In the FFXIV situation, at least Yoshi-P has stated, multiple times, F2P is a possibility in the future - they could easily just point to that and say "Uh, no, look we said (months/years) ago that it was never off the table.". They have themselves covered. Other devs who let the rumors grow and expand have themselves partially to blame when the backlash occurs.
People need to learn to temper their expectations. They need to learn to do research and check on the truth/validity of things instead of just taking it as true because it sounds cool and they want to believe it's correct. They need to stop placing expectations on developers to create things that were never promised/described to begin with. And, *some* developers need to do a better job communicating, fact-checking and engaging in rumor control when they see people getting carried away with assumptions or expectations.

and this is what happened with this game. All we knew in the beginning was a ship flying around an infinite universe and landing on planets. Nothing else was said by anyone and people literally ran with it and even after being exposed to games like Elite Dangerous, Space Enginners with planets they still would keep on running with it apply all kinds of assumptions to the point where I am a bit surprised nobody has said that you will be able to mount trophy heads from the kills you make (which reminds me that is something Wurm was talking about doing I need to see if thye have that in place now)

I guess I'm just not looking in the right places, because I've heard and seen almost nothing about No Man's Sky, nor do I have a single friend salivating over the game.
That's too bad. I remember the very first time the game was advertised years ago. Even before Sony put their name all over it.
And I've been eagerly awaiting every piece of info from it ever since. Also pre-purchased on the first day it was available for pre-purchase. Very much looking forward to this one.
@ElRenmazuo You listed three heavy story driven RPG's that have tons of lore and story and also games that you could put in +200 hours if you do all the oddball quest. so when you side tracked your argument saying you will be able to p[lay this game without a story, you could have led off with solitare, mindcraft, or some other non story game. Many games exist without story. I just don't think it will hold my attention long enough. I might just watch someone play on twitch to get my fill.
p.s.When is Sean going to hijack this thread to talk about something to do with VR?

Wasn't it sony who bailed them out when their studio was flooded (causing them to lose a bunch of progress)? Just trying to remember when they got involved.

I have to disagree. I think this title will be all that it's cracked up to be. HG and SM have been pretty open about what the title is and what their goals are with it. They have created numerous tools to help make sure the title is creating content the way that it should.
I mean they have managed to procedurally generate an entire universe. With that they have created numerous tools to ensure things are created properly. Such as their "drones" which they can use to do fly-overs of planets to see what is being created to ensure that it is correct. We are talking about a giant engine using procedural generation, not random generation.
In the end if the game does not live up to the hype that should not be placed on the shoulders of HG, SM, or Sony for that matter, because they have intentionally not revealed a great deal of information. I feel it falls onto those which play the title itself, those which draw conclusions based on information which cannot be confirmed. The information flow has been very tight for this title and I for one am just plain excited to see it come to fruition.
The best part is websites like Twitch where people will play for you so they can earn income while I just watch them to see if the game is interesting or not.
My issue is after years of delays and finally a big yay release day is finally here, opening sales and taking our money, then they have the balls to delay it another 3 months with only a pretty lame " we are getting death threats " apology. Of course you are getting death threats, people are not idiots people know you needed cash so made up a release date you have zero intention of ever meeting for your cash grab. These game devs always think they are the smartest people in the room and the rest of us are total morons, this is not the first time a game developer has lied for a cash infusion.
Personally, after these guys track record so far, I will be shocked if they release this year.

They received the death threats because they delayed.. not the other way around.... They chose to postpone.. if they needed the cash they would have released early.... The story on death threats wasn't an apology...
People are idiots... I think it's been proven quite accurately... very.. very recently.
Why are we pretending that what stage of development (or prior to) matters as far as announcing your game? Why aren't we talking about the fact that these companies announce and then go quiet for MONTHS... release some screen shots... gone for months... a video that's wholly underwhelming... silence...
When you announce doesn't matter, as long as you're honest about what stage you're in. It's all about staying INVOLVED in those who show interest. Waiting until you're ready for testers is ludicrous. That's how you build an environment where testers all come from this company that just collects names and charge you to have beta testers that don't even know what your game is playing through and providing hollow and uninspired bugs and insight.
Inform from inception AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A COMPLETE GAME CONCEPT and start slowly building the audience by remaining in contact with them once or twice a month with credible information and insight. Nothing major just talk to your community... they aren't just going to pop up overnight unless you're it's an IP people will jump on the SECOND they hear the name.
SPOILER ALERT: There aren't very many of those out there so indie studios and small studios NEED to start building an audience from the beginning.

No Man's Sky is going to have Taxidermy?! Dude! I am so buying it! I was wondering when someone would realize the genius in developing a Taxidermy Simulator in Space!!
People who send death threats like this are disturbed people. Nothing that happens during a game's development is a 'reason' this type of behavior happens. It's simply a trigger.
There's going to be a huge backlash from those that have convinced themselves that NMS is the living embodiment of all their space game fantasies...
Yup, somewhere along the line, "No Man's Sky" became "Everyman's Perfect Game" !
Half the blame for that belongs to the usual gamer runaway hype...
But the other half of the blame can be laid squarely at Sean Murray's feet. He's been the spokesman for NMS all along, and his interview replies have been all over the place. And there's no shortage of interviews over the last 3 years.
If you look really hard, you could probably "prove" anything you want regarding NMS, because somewhere on the internet there's a video, transcript or article where Sean apparently said that thing X is a thing. But in a different interview Sean will have said that thing X is NOT actually a thing, or isn't a thing in the way that people think it is...
I'm not personally concerned, I'm buying the game for the exploration and eye-candy, not because I believe it's the next Freelancer or it is "better" than Elite:Dangerous.

well it would make sense after they put in housing, building, fishing, hunting, animal taming

I agree with your assessment and I would like to add is the lack of story content? Will there even be a story line to follow and questing and such? They really have not talked much about this and if you can't meet up with your mates then this game will need a lot more then just fancy stuff.... it will need a good story line and questing to go with all this fancy stuff.
I think NMS will be pretty close to what they are saying it will be. People have already sat down and played the full game. I can only imagine that this delay is for a polish top off and last minute bug fixes that popped up.
The comparison to SC ( in the article ) was just stupid and only something a fan in denial that is grasping at anything would say.
