I will state once again that this silly idea that you do not care about other people's opinions is nothing more than a teenager stamping their feet.
We are social animals who evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to be social, it is an absolute requirement for survival. If you think you do not require the approval of your peers you are a moron and your opinion is absurd.
Sorry, but the "I don't care what people think" argument is not a true representation of the way most people feel most of the time, it is a petulant strop, an irrelevance.
When you are young/younger you tend to care what others think or feel about you. With me it hit me around 30 where I could give a Fu*k what others said or thought about me. By the time I hit 50+ I just ended up laughing at people that thought or said bad things about me.
When you get older (I won't say get more mature, not sure you really do) you tend to laugh at stuff that would piss you off or get upset. Only thing you end up caring about is family, everything else you start to see is a joke.
Never forget opinions are like aholes we all got them. You also learn from everyone's opinions. So for me I like having them here and to me it's a good thing.
While I like your viewpoint; I kinda think you care less only because modern life removes you from the experiences that forge strong relationships as you get older. So I think your conclusion is (possibly depending upon research) backwards.
I genuinely wonder if their are a core group of people who consider themselves (and are perhaps considered ... yes they clearly are) MMORPG insiders, who just get a free arsehat pass, that they use regularly and repeatedly. Then the small minded twonks who come here agree, because their favouritist member did something they liked, so "yay". But just supposition, of course it is nothing like that.
I know, right, he thinks he's part of the club......
And a perfect example; Kyle is capable of making silly remarks that would get anyone else warned because he gets preferential treatment
What's the password?
Do you know the secret handshake?
Don't be silly, nothing so obvious, just a little nepotism on the sly... not even that, just a little freedom to those who have been around a while to be a bit of a twat a little longer than those who haven't

You're just saying that because you can't do the handshake.

There is a problem with this view.
You are not a "person" to me. "You" consist of text from a random individual on the internet. I have no idea if you genuinely mean what you type nor does it impact me in any meaningful way beyond being bored and feeling like responding to an absurd discussion for entertainment value.
Don't like what someone else is doing, report them. Don't like the site management, go somewhere else. Pretty simply stuff that a mature enlightened individual, such as yourself, should have no problem accomplishing.
If someone clicking "LOL" is triggering you, maybe you should hang out in real social situations more and avoid the anonymity of the internet and all that comes with it.
Hopefully I get 10000 Agrees so I can sleep easy tonight, 1 LOL and I'll most likely cry myself to sleep...

Well, that argument works both ways. You are not a person to me, so I guess we cancel each other out.
Although.. I think I am a person to you given the detail you went into and the way you have imposed your own solitude onto me... given that you are so offensive... I'll leave you to your basement, have fun.

I'm not being offensive, I gave my honest answer that you asked for.
I find it silly going online to a game site and posting on a forum with such nonsense.
"I want your opinion, but if you don't agree with me, you're a moron." Amazing logic and way to have a discussion, especially if you wanted to have a meaningful one.
Clearly I've had a lot of time on my hands with the number of posts on here, but I have no clue how many people have agreed or awesomed my ramblings. I don't care.
I'm throwing my statements/opinions out into virtual land and that's about as far as my caring goes. If I want to have a real conversion about real topics, I'll stick to my "basement" as that is clearly the only place someone with a differing opinion could exist.
I also don't use Facebook. Think of all the deeply thought out likes I'm missing!
While I don't feel the need to subject myself to such nonsense, it is unfortunate that some latch on to virtual thumbs as approval these days. It is okay to have self approval and have no need to go looking for it from faceless strangers.
I might have missed it, but I don't see how the little boxes being clicked (or not) have any impact on the riveting discussions on this site.

Woot, Kopo is back! Missed ya buddy! Just need Narius to return as well to complete my forum fun time!
So, spent any money yet?....
On topic, I don't really care about the approval of other forum visitors per say. I will admit to regularly getting a feeling of superiority when I visit these forums, but this kinda balances out with despair at the stupidity in this world.
The only time I kinda care about the forum ranks is when I'm trying to decide whether I just missed something, some point of view that I just can't seem to understand. If someone has blue/purple name then it means they've posted enough stuff to be considered interesting and have plenty of people agree, so if the arguement they've laid out doesn't make sense I'm more likely to spend the time trying to understand it than, say, a green or white poster.
But, forum ranks are a static scale - you can never go down - so they are kinda pointless. I generally try to do a quick calculation of posts vs rank. So (and this is going to be blunt, sorry), but Kopo used to post every day, all the time, but never got above green. So, not only was I not convinced by the content of his/her posts, the low rank also meant I didn't spend any additional thought because the community also didn't really agree either.
Compare to someone like Loke. Since the ranking stuff came into play, he's achieved a blue rating pretty quickly without posting endless shit all the time. So, not only do I find the content of his posts interesting, if he does post something I disagree with I'm more inclined to spend additional time trying to figure out our differences.
Having said all that, given that the rating system is still fairly new and I've been posting consistently since it launched, I kinda just have a handle on who most people are. I've learnt who posts interesting stuff, who posts just information, who can have a decent discussion and who's just here for forum pvp.
I'd much rather have a ranking system that is based on posts vs points. (obv just posts since ranking came into play).

Pretty much this. Thanks for coming back. Sorry I made you so mad

Remember the correlation/ causation fallacy.
Yes we are social and have a need for approval from a select group. That's it. People on a forum are normally not party of that group.

I might not put much weight into what others online have to say, doesn't detract from the entertainment value.
If you can't figure out how to respond with something of substance or don't care what I have to say, guess I've done all that I could.
As trolling has become an art these days, hard to tell when people seriously believe such things or when they are just screwing around for the lulz.
I hope for the 2nd, but bet the 1st is happening more often than not.
