Rarely seen this. They can report all they want. If your getting banned or warned it's likely cause you did something against the rules.
No, it is not that simplistic. The moderation here isn't that honest. Being part of the clique, as in being a mod on a posting account, or a friend of a mod, or just sharing a mod's view, will see you protected. Saying the lightest thing outside of that will get you a warning or a ban. Mods are human, they have their own agendas and axes to grind. I have known a couple in game personally.
It's been many many YEARS since I've received a warning...
This is why folks use the term 'uneven'. Good for you though.
As long as "uneven" means "mostly in their heads" I'll agree with you.
The clique speaks. Everyone else must be paranoid and crazy.
There likely have been some mods who were biased and also likely occasional mistakes by everyone however by and large i think those were few and far between.
The most likely answer is people broke the rules.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.
I don't come around here much anymore. Maybe once a week. I haven't completely lost interest but I have other projects to do now and they kind of take priority.
Someday maybe it will be different but the genre as a whole has kind of fallen into a rut that is really deep.
I'm choosing to be positive with what is left of this genre, and I do actually think mmorpg does a good job with covering mmos, mostly mmos, and other games that as a mmorpg'er I might have an interest in.
My only complaint is they release so many topics/stories, that stuff cycles off the page quickly... I think maybe cutting some stuff, or keeping some stories/news around longer on the main page would keep more in depth discussion and attention on stuff for longer. Sometimes things are off the front page in less than 2 hours... the whole thing has been scrolled down!

I agree for the most part, but my original account was banned without any of the posts removed/edited and without any kinda explanation on the matter a bit ago. All prompts on the matter asking as to why has been met with nada save for a brief conversation with the CEO who said he doesn't know about the mod stuff.
Super duper confusing, but I kinda just moved on with it and oddly zero problems since then.
I make things personal on purpose occasionally. And I've been banned for good reasons before. But there have been a few times that really were ridiculous. It's easy for people that haven't been banned or warned for very poor reasons to imagine that all of the warnings/bans are fair. But there have definitely been a few times that made zero sense from my point of view.
I never actually post about any of that stuff though - that would be a blatant reason to get banned. I haven't been banned in years and have been warned very little in recent times. Still, I have this bad habit of returning in kind. It's immature, but then again, fuck those mother fuckers, right?

Moderators are always biased, it's a human thing. Bias is OK, prejudice is not. I haven't seen prejudiced moderation on this site.
So once again... what would be the downside be of testing a forum where the rules on "negative" posting were relaxed? Not relaxed for the straw man argument about obvious attacks but one where you don't have to worry that your third post in a thread may get you a warning for being overly negative even though your just responding to some diehard fan who posted left 8 consecutive cheerleading posts the the same thread.
Why not try it? People who want their safe space can simply skip that forum...

What are these "rules on negative posting" you speak of and if they exists, why does our own Wizardry never get banned?
One thing I've learned in this thread is that "negative posting" seems to be used as an euphemism for "behaving like an asshat." People here get warned and banned for unsophisticated personal insults directed at other forum users or the staff, posting on an alt account, whining repeatedly about having their threads closed, etc. If you don't do that you can be just as negative as you want.
"Safe space" lol.

If you think it is required that you make a personal insult you are misinformed.

I believe you will find that if you negatively criticize points of a game, you'll be fine. If you jump into a thread and say something like "xxxx game sucks shit" you will get a warning. If you make a habit of "xxxx game sucks shit" you will get a ban.
I believe it's a case of whether a mod believes a poster is just trying to stir up shit.

That probably goes back to "how" you criticize a game.
How many times has someone posted about them being banned for "being honest" on some forum only for us to then see their post and try hard not to roll our eyes.
Additionally, as I've mentioned in this thread, some people just don't know how to criticize a game. And sometimes it becomes less about criticism and more about a personal vendetta, their life mission, to constantly attack.
At what point does any reasonable person say "ok, we get it, you don't like the game, now feel free to move on".
Lastly, I've criticized Lord of the Rings online quite a bit. for me it was a huge disappointment, their side quest writing has declined in quality and the helm's deep game play is the most boring, lackluster addition of any game I've played.
No warnings or bannings for that.

Yet as mentioned there are several posters here who regularly post negative comments.
Seems the trick is to not post the same negative comments over and over, they tend to be quite creative while rarely crossing the line into personal attacks.

Taking your SC example, I can see many of the main SC posters from both sides of the fence are fine, moderation wise. Some are nothing but negative concerning SC but their comments are mainly arguable criticisms and not just brainless bashing.

From 2003-2016 I've been part of this site and I've seen where it used to be and where it is now. There was a time when there was thousand+ of concurrent, active community on these forums and now there is barely a hundred. As a MMORPG fan I am disappointed when any community/site is going downhill but usually these things are caused by bad decisions within those in charge of either their games or in this case their site/forums.
On the flip side I find this site actually has more involvement and feed back on there forums Im guessing you bought into IGN and there all encompassing not only MMOs but movies ect Thats kinda like when Comic Books moved from panels and real content and went to splash pages with little substance . And now look at comic books LOL . MMOrpg is still about MMorpgs

Yes, back when MMO forums were the main 3rd party community and MMO sites like this were the main 3rd party news source for MMOs, it was bigger.
I'm sure Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, TeamSpeak, Ventrillo, Mumble, RaidCall, GuildPortal, GuildLaunch, Wordpress, Twitter, Reddit, and the 3-5" screens of mobile devices have absolutely nothing to do with diminishing forum communities.
You forgot Discord playing ESO I see that Zone chated many times only thing is are they any better then Vent and Ts Your right more thrown at people to divide and conquer the little time they have as it is

I think you are thinking of this site as a "fan site".
It doesn't matter what we think. It does matter what the owners think and what type of business they want to have and what issues (if any) such a section would have.
Do "I" care? No, not really, as long as the site maintains decent discussion and doesn't get dragged down to lowest common denominator.
edit: I should add that I'm not convinced that moderation is the reason that site traffic is down. I'm very sure it has to do with not having a lot of games in the pipeline.
After all, CNN has decent moderation and they have quite a bit of traffic. That's because they have quite a bit of news.

I believe it's a case of whether a mod believes a poster is just trying to stir up shit.

But again... what is the downside to trying that optional forum on a controversial game? I'm a fan of SC but would have no problem starting there... If I don't want to read the negativity I just skip that forum... But those who want to participate could do so.

Seems the trick is to not post the same negative comments over and over, they tend to be quite creative while rarely crossing the line into personal attacks.
Come to think of it, I'm a pretty negative poster who routinely slams all things not old school, virtual world style MMORPGs or basically aren't EVE yet have not seen an issue.
Oh that's right, I'm in the special secret 'clique'

And now look at comic books LOL . MMOrpg is still about MMorpgs
