I want to point out that I feel this forum is sub-par. It is as if there is something wrong with the forum engine.

If I log on, while inside a thread, I am tossed back to the index page. That isn't right.

I also don't like how this forum seem to have removed the options for coloring text.

Social media has hit every type of forum that exists, it has become the default place to start your day and end it. Gaming sites have in no way been immune.

MMOs are not the genre they once were. Less AAA is coming out, less has been coming out for a good five years now. Gaming has moved to repetitive formula and MMOs have suffered from that more than any other genre.

Many young gamers see forums as the past, they are only really concerned with keeping in touch with social network friends and those they actually game with. The wider gaming community holds little interest for them.

I have been here from 2003 myself, it is hardly surprising that MMORPG.com has taken a big hit repeatedly from the factors above, does that mean I will give up on forums or MMO's? No.

What we need is the reviews to be like those ridiculous ranting ones you get on You Tube. The reviewers need to scream, shout and act like infants. Likewise for Bill on MMOFTW he needs to act like someone possessed so they get a few more clicks. :D

The largest US mmorpg forum is reddit.

For other language there are similar forums all really active.

I think the reality is if I want to talk about a specific mmorpg, there are better forum out there.

And this forum people really discuss about mmorpg design, which not many is interested.

Yet countless times I've seen people claim they steer clear of these forums because it is a "cesspool of negativity"

So which is it, people respond more to negativity, or they prefer to avoid it?

It's both. Some people will avoid it, but those that do stay will engage more because of it. They are less likely to lurk and they post more often. The increased activity brings more in.

These forums right now are the same old 10-20 faces lording it over a small pool of active users, saying the same old thing. It's pompous, stale, slow, and unevenly moderated. Not the most fun place to come and post.

The current setup is kind of a no-mans land where moderation is at times haphazard and uneven and really only serves to diminish the enjoyment of both supporters and detractors.

Also keep in mind that it is conflicting opinions that drive traffic to the forums.  The forums are what differentiates this site from places like Massively(also a great site but generally just news and opinions with limited reader interaction). You should be focused on ways to spark debate and conversation.
You can have different opinions and debate without people acting like trash.
But it's the "trash" that brings in the clicks, no?

Make this site resemble an online "Housewives of (insert self-absorbed city here)" and watch the clicks roll in! Seriously.

Being a Forum PvP lover myself I would gladly welcome an un-moderated area to spout bullshit without repercussion. Sticks and Stones and all that jazz.

Oh Kopo.  it took you like all of one whole post before you started praising Kopo with this alt. Must be hard for an egocentric to accept being disliked and considered a troll and banned even. What reddit kicked you out too is it? No hugs for you from here any way.

Considering this medium you can easily control what you type and yet people cannot express themselves without being offensive and ban inviting. Those who get barred or banned deserve it in my opinion.

Just like MMOs can have PVE and PVP servers, I've always wondered why forums couldnt have both a moderated section and a FFA zone.

The latter of course would be join at your own risk.

    See, here is my issue.

Kopo and his/her/attackchopper ilk are entertaining, whether they mean to be or not. One of my personal favorite posters here is nuttier than a peanut farm but man can his posts be fun to read. "Outsider art" if you will. I enjoy the wingnuts. Who wants to immerse themselves in a circle-jerk echo chamber?

Hell I miss the bat guano covered troll that was Brenics. I wouldn't be surprised if @Erillion does too.

The only logical reason I can see is legal issues. Like if someone would do something stupid like get butthurt and take it into the real world, if you know what i mean.

The Internet is not meant for everyone; but you can't, nor should you be able to, keep those too weak willed to handle it from visiting. Therefore we must put up with controls to protect those that can't handle a Wild West type environment.

Honestly, it's the genre itself. We're not immune to when the money goes out of the AAA MMO world. One day it'll return, and people will return. Until then, we do what we can and try to entertain you guys.
    Thank you Bill.

Just to point out the obvious, the "good" people still here are not that many, as opposed to when moderation rules were more relaxed and the site was thriving, the "good" people like to argue with the "bad" people (I over-simplified, there is not such thing as bad or good people, we are just different)

I want to point out another obvious thing, controversial  threads like this one are really popular.....check the number of views compared to other threads in The Pub Section
3.3K views in just 3 days, it dwarfs any other "Micky Mouse" thread on the list.
People click this thread because they expect to find some "PvP" like it or not, and though very few participate by posting their opinion, a large number like reading this type of threads.

Numbers speaks volumes, everything else is just hot hair.
People like controversy, debates with polarizing opinions are interesting, whilst boring monologues everybody agrees with are not.

From 2003-2016 I've been part of this site and I've seen where it used to be and where it is now. There was a time when there was thousand+ of concurrent, active community on these forums and now there is barely a hundred.
But that was when mmorpgs were popular...nowadays the genre is rather retreating back into it's niche again.

As a MMORPG fan I am disappointed when any community/site is going downhill but usually these things are caused by bad decisions within those in charge of either their games or in this case their site/forums.

The switch from being a mmorpg-centered webpage to a more rounded, general games-news website is not an easy one.
You just can't compete with the big pages that are owned and backed up by multimillion-dollar media conglomerates.

That's not to say that no bad decisions have been made. You saw the downfall of the affiliates like "FPSGuru" (sp?), the effort with the new website that became a pitiful running gag over years and the amateurish story of the forum change. You saw the site's general setup and layout catering more and more to ads and less to actual content.
So there is alot of room for improvement, there always is. Maybe someone from the staff will chime in and PR-assure you that "we are always trying to improve" and in some aspects you can also see that -while elsewhere they just don't do anything. We've seen loads of reasonable suggestions made by veterans mostly going unheard in recent years. I'm hitting 10 years here (incl. a previous account) and i have yet to see a giveaway posted by Craig that isn't crapped up in one or another way, like wrong links, invalid keys, no deliveries or such. We still miss basic forum features like underscore or text colors. What happened to premium/sub ad-free membership? The official poll was started on 2nd of August, that's quite some month ago now.

I guess nowadays it's rather about getting the costs covered and ship along somehow....and they seem to be ok with that.

This site's active members are mostly fanboys of the status quo.  Every time I give some niche idea for a game that wants to appeal to a specific audience some guy like DMKano will jump in and let me know how useless my idea is because then their game won't be the next WoW.  Games have been trying to be the next WoW for 10+ years and it just isn't going to happen.  MMO games will never get back to where they once were until they return to the niche audiences they were originally famous with.

I've all but stopped posting on this site just because any time I have anything to say these 'LEGENDARY' people get on and let me know how bad my idea is or how worthless my opinion is.  Their opinion is obviously much more valuable than mine since they live on these forums.

As in real life, don't let someones color affect how you compose yourself.

If you feel the need to speak out, do so without worrying about what anyone says. If it's worth listening to, it will be. If not...

Maybe your opinion was worthless? Got an example of one that wasn't when the mean "legendaries" treated you badly?

If they just stuck to posting nutty stuff for humor's sake that would be fine. I think most would join you in considering it entertaining. However, there are several that specifically try to disrupt conversation and provoke negative reactions. MMORPG.com has a long history of taking action against those who react to trolls rather than getting rid of the trolls. This drives some people away and creates a level of resentment in some that are impacted but stay. Both contribute to a less positive and more caustic posting environment.

Yep I have been warned in years past about calling out an obvious troll while the troll themselves was free to continue. That actually makes my and others argument doesn't it? This sites own actions shows it puts a value on trolling to some degree.

But they have put the hammer down on the outright vicious trolls like Brenics lately. Actually it seems they have been hitting the Star Citizen forums hard with the ban hammer more than most places here. Maybe it's confirmation bias on my part.

The nuances of Trolling are not my strong suit. I'm not emotionally invested in games like some here are so I don't get my Jimmies rustled and throw a hissy every time someones post an contrary position.

Remind me of Narious or narius .
After he finish forum crushing with his strawman attack , where is he now ? make another clone to spam ?

I think the first wave of troll start around 2012 to 2013 . At that time most of them have less than 3000 post even though they account are made before 2008 and they start farming spam .
Specially narius , he have around 1000 post at 2013 (made 2007)  if i remember right and jump to over 20k or 25k after more than 2 years .

Well to test it, let's open a lightly moderated forum for one of the big games in addition to the existing one.  Then watch and see what happens.
