You are an amazing GM !
The different server types are the best way to go as long as they have a PvP Server as in FFA(no factions...). This makes for a very interesting type of gameplay (I believe so) as you always have to live on the edge. Who knows when suddenly your enemy will come out and start attacking. It is a challenge not some place where all I do is just kill monsters all day (maybe Heroes Journey will change this grind though, who knows).
Originally posted by Techleo I totaly respected the L2 pvp system. Save for the fact one flaw. Alot of the time on the server i played if you made someone a murderer the only people able to kill the red were other reds lol. So what ended up happening is if you attacked they killed you. If you didnt they still killed you because all there buddies wouldnt attack back. Made for a rather unpleseant circle. Wasnt like that on man servers tho. Just a limited experience i disliked.
Incorrect, anyone can attack a RED with no negitive outcome. You do NOT go RED by killing a RED. That is the control in the game. You can not go on killing/ganking sprees because you become open target for anyone who feels like killing you. On top of it, your chances of dropping an item off your inventory on death are greatly increased while RED.
The open PvP in L2 is easily one of the most misunderstood aspects of the game. Basically if you are attacked and do not fight back the other player will go red. (he becomes a murderer, on top of it your chance of dropping anything is about zero) If you fight back, you yourself will go "Purple" (meaning hostile) for a short period and will cause no Karma on the RED player. (because you basicly consented to the fight)
If a "white" (peaceful) player attacks/kills a RED there are no negitive effects at all. REDs are bad, being RED is bad. Everyone will kill you hoping to get a piece of your gear.
...Everyone will kill you hoping to get a piece of your gear.
And therein lies the problem with L2 PvP, not so much the system as the comunity - they do not care why you are red, just that you are and they can get something from it
frostydf2, your last comment saddens me.

Sorta true..... but that is the balance. No one forces you to go RED and you can not accidentally go RED unless you paid no attention at all to the mechanics of the game. The game although "open" PvP discourages anti-social behavior. If you are Justified or feel you are "entitled" to kill someone (revenge or whatnot) Generally you would want your guild/friends there to protect you. (meaning you would need to have some ingame, thus be part of the community) If you even can find the offender again. Its really no different then any other game. Other then that a RED is considered a PKer and killed. Also, just because someone is RED is no guarantee they will drop anything, there is only an increased chance.
Killing anyone is risky in L2 simply because you never who you are killing It is more then likely the other player has friends or is in a Guild. The last thing you want is to end up on a large guilds "kill on sight" list because you wanted to kill low levels. I know I have put way to much time and effort into my main character to get it all turned upside down over killing someone for no reason. Not to mention my Guild would probably throw me out because I put the entire Guild at risk of a clan war. Many guilds feel this way. Its hard enough with all the politics in the game and Clan Wars over castle and hunting spots already going on. There are guilds who dont care about that sort of behavior but they generally don't last very long.
The community is actually very very strong and very supportive/helpful. You would need to play and socialise ingame to know that though. Many people jump in for a very short time and write the game off because its difficult. Starting out is very tough in L2 and generally, things do not start happening for you until level 25 or 30 - minimum.
I've been reading up on the lore of Elanthia, so I am wondering if the lore of Hero's Journey Elanthia will be the same as or similar to DragonRealms or Gemstone lore?
Or does the Elanthia of Hero's Journey branch off from previous lore and form its own separate story?
I'm sure the Lore Section on the official site, when updated, will fill in this info, but can the GMs enlighten us a bit about HJ lore -- or would it be better just to wait for something official?
Not to take away from Spirits lore question, cuz I'd like to know more about it as well. But what are you all most excited to learn about in the upcoming dev log? Wizards, Necromancers, or Rangers?
I'm partial to Rangers myself, wizards maybe.
OH! and I thought of a question for the GMs since this was posted in the "Questions to an Off-Site GM" thread.
Is there a question that hasn't been asked about HJ yet, that you'd like to answer? Take your time
I am very much interested in what they plan for Rangers and Wizards.
I first tend to play Ranger/Archer types, since I like their abilities "in the wilds," which unfortunately usually give them skills which are not very group-friendly.
I usually do not like Rogues much, but that also may be because I have not liked the skills Rogues had in other games -- Simutronics may make them more interesting. Seen some screenshots of Rogues for HJ which seem to indicate they will be more interesting.
Wizards controlling magic usually makes them an interesting class. Especially if they get a lot of utility spells to make them "tricky."
Druids also can usually do a lot of interesting things.

BTW, with E3 coming, and since I will not be going in person, is there one place that is better than another to get really good E3 game demo information? Just wondering.

I saw that as well and I highly doubt it. If they cover any MMO it'll be Vanguard, anything WoW, and maybe StarGate Worlds or Star Trek (if Perpetual is there which would be dumb if they aren't).
Simu isn't high profile as is Vanguard (With the Microsoft PR team behind it) or Blizzard. Hell, 90% of the people I know who play MMOs don't even know HJ is in development . Which isn't very good if you ask me. E3 Needs to come and info needs to get out so sites can start pushing HJ to the masses.

The Lore/Timeframe of HJ takes place (If I remember correctly) before Dragonrealms and Gemstone
And it is unique when compared to DR or GS's lore.

I'll get back to you on this.
Hrm, I don't think anyone has asked about what "type" of currency we will have. Although I may have missed it.
I can save you some time though, I've not even been told yet either.
So, what I'll do is give away a detail ablout clan stuff that hasn't been told I suppose. This is just a small detail but, as of "this" moment, to even form a clan it takes 2 people of a certain level to make. The person that initiates the forming of a clan becomes the leader, and the second person becomes the co-leader.
I'm looking at a coding a system for this that will track how long a leader has been gone. After a given time frame (and notices to others), the co-leader is auto promoted upward to leader so a clan may continue. The same will work for a co-leader. The oldest member of a "rank" below the coleader will be promoted upward to co-leader if the leader does not promote someone within the allotted time.
That's just one "tiny" part of clan/guild stuff... and subject to change without notice.
Thats a great featue which I could have used in WoW as I used to run a guild but due to personal reasons couldn't be in game for an extended period, when I came back the guild had disolved

While its nice that leaders can't "abandon ship" and leave a whole guild without a rutter, I think the biggest benefit comes from the relationship building that this idea promotes. Think about it. Guilds will be much less likely to spam invites to random people because the reputation and values of everyone in the guild actually matters now.
How much would it suck to have a few of the most elder players in the guild go on vacation at the same time(not inconcievable) when a different guildmate eventually becomes leader. Only problem is that he was a random spam invitee with zero loyalty a taste for mayhem.
People will want to actually "know" others a bit better before they shoot them an invite.

I saw Stephanie's interview at gamebunny and had a question about the sweet screenshots we've been seeing up to this point. (Stephanie's great btw, A LOT more interesting that the other interviewees)
Anyways, here's an excerpt from Q&A. ------- "gamebunny: What about from a game creation standpoint what has caused the most trouble as you inch toward the gold master?
Stephanie Shaver (HERO'S JOURNEY): Computers. Man, those computers with their hard-drives and their memory and their wires....
Seriously. Computers. We want to do amazing things visually, and we've had to throttle back on it because this is an MMO and in MMOs (as in any 3D game) framerate is probably one of the most important technical challenges the team has to contend with. Even with paying tithes to King Framerate, though, the game is still visually stunning, and though we wish we could do more, we know our limitations and are constantly pressing against them." -------
So, for obvious reasons developers usually release screenshots with the Graphics settings cranked up to the max levels. My question is whether we've been seeing screenshots at playable levels (with a good computer of course), or are they shots from a part of the development cycle that doesn't need to contend with Framerate.
Either way, I'm sure the game is still "stunning" as Stephanie states, but I'm curious to know if those same screenshot settings will even be achievable in the released version of the game.

When Steph says "throttle back", she's talking about the game itself... not just graphic settings.

The e3 video from last year shows what it's able to do. And that was a year ago. It does so much more now. That video is 100% in line with our screenshots as well.... that is until recently.
There have been drastic improvments to the game and engine over the last year. Examine recent screen shots with past ones and you should be able to spot the difference.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited should we be about the information that will come out at E3?
1 is a pretty UI
10 is Hero's Journey begins to usher in an era of peace and prosperity the likes of which the world has never seen. Republican and Democrat, Muslim and Jew, Greifer and Carebear, all adventuring together in a spirit of unity, joy, peace and brotherhood. Violence, and crime soon become a distant memory. Hate becomes and foriegn and abstract concept as the world finally achieves harmony. During server maintanence, we all emerge from our homes and in one glorious voice, chant 2 letters again and again. "H. . . J. . . H. . . J. . . H. . . J"
*edit* 500th post on this thread. WWOOOOOOooooo*cough*ooooooo. . . .
Are there any other playable races planned for release, or possibly in a upcoming expansion? Like a reptilian of snake like race? Pretty please, with sugar on top?
