I also wanted to mention that the onsite and offsite crew are gearing up for e3 in early May. I look forward to seeing some of you there!

So how much of a hand do you have in box-popping, device disabling and them DARK houses? Your boxes in DR were and still are fantastic, so I hope you at least have a lot of input.

Not as much as you would think. My primary focus has been and will continue to be Clans / Guilds / Great Houses. With a slim chance of taking over Group Mechanics as well.

But rest assured, I will make time to find a very cool way to kill you via a trap of some type. (Yes, I already have ideas)

I haven't found any answers to this yet, though admittedly I haven't searched the entire 40 page thread (I did search the FAQ at least!).

A GM commented on creating villages for instanced quests. This got me wondering whether instanced quests reuse locations in HJ, or if unique areas are created for individual quests. Which would be a little...disconcerting. Rather Brigadoon-ish.

Hero1: ...and that's how I saved the village of Bobville.
    Hero2: Bob-what?
Hero1: Bobville...about 5 miles northwest next to the lake, just past the mill?
Hero2: Dude, I grew up in that area. There's no place there called Bobville. *twilight zone music plays*

I have questions around box-popping and device disabling also.  Is there someone who can comment on these?  I was just about to start another topic on this.

I have never played a game with box-popping, lock picking, device disabling, etc.  Is opening a locked box more than just clicking on your skill and having a roll of the dice to see if it opens or not.  Maybe you destroy it, maybe there is damage to you, damage to the contents, etc.  I guess I am looking for someone to set my expectations on how much to expect out of a system like this.

Should I expect several skills to examine the box and determine the mechanisms buiult into it, and seperate skills to disable different types of measures?  Is it more than using my skill against the item and praying?

Maybe an example is in order: I have a box, and upon examination(using a skill, I guess examining the device could make the device activate too if my examining skill is not well honed), I determinte there is are 3 wires in a trip wire system, and I could examine it further(another skill usage) and find out that by cutting 2 of them the box would be opened without damage? I use my skill(another skill usage) to determine for sure one of the wires to be cut.  I cut that and there are no issues.  However I cannot determine the second of the three wires to cut.  So I have some choices now.  I can 1) Give the box back to the owner in a partially disabled state, 2) Make a guess and attempt a cut of one of the wires and bear the consquences.  3) Rexamine the box, with the threat of the device enabling again.

I am just on a fishing expedition here to try to understand more about a skill such as "lock picking"  I personally can't stand the 'box popping' term it seems soooo artificial.

Box popping where "I" come from (Dragonrealms) is a 2 stage process that involved 2 different skills. Disarming and Lockpicking.

Disarming there has a multi stage process that involves finding the trap first, then disarming it. There are also various other bits to disarming... like... removing the trap inside the box (or part of it) to be sold to the local "npc" locksmiths.

The DR system of disarm is very... intricate. And I enjoy it.

Now, the lockpicking part itself is fairly straight forward depending on your skill in it and the quality of the pick you are using to open the box. Yes, there they have "lockpicks" to use. Thieves there can even make lockpicks.. and darn fine ones at that. Non-thieves can as well, but not with the quality that thieves can.

There is even a "Locksmith Union"... and unoffcical/offcial group of players that set prices for lockpicks and offer services to other players for a small fee.

How does this boil down in HJ?

Other than the fact that you know the systems will exist, that's about all that's been shared. But the small history lesson should give you some idea as to how we do things sometimes. This in no way means that HJ will have a system identical or close to DR though.

Most of the time, failing to disarm a trap can have drastic result. (or funny)

    Examples:

Scarabs eat the skin off your character.

You are blown 50 feet from where you are standing with a bad ringing in your ears.. and bleeding.

Your box bounces from room to room spewwing it's contents on the ground at different locations for others to take.

    Poison Gas.

    Teleports in a "nasty" critter.

Teleports YOU to a nasty area.

    Needles with various poisons.

    Shrapnel type boxes.

    The all important, fireball.

    And lets not forget acid.

Like I said, these are just examples from some of the traps in the games we currently have. This in no way means that they will make it into HJ.

That's about all I can share on the topic at the moment until the onsite gang releases more information.

P.S. Laughing Gas... I can not forget laughing gas. It's not about harming the player It's just about making them have fun. Humor has it's place.

P.S.S. Device disabling. Not all traps are in boxes. ;) Traps can be part of the Enviroment / Quest.

And, just to show more of what I was talking about...

    http://dr.warcry.com/index.php/content/compendium/traplist (Traps in Dragonrealms)

    http://www.jerrec.com/traps.htm (Traps in Gemstone)

    http://www.lurksponge.com/locksmithunion/

Through various links on any of those sites, you can see how we "currently" do our Box Popping.

Thanks for the reply, this helps a bunch.  It sounds like a lockpick could possibly be a crafted item, and based on the crafting as described to date, this could be very interesting.

It sounds then like a rogue could build boxes to do similar type things, and does not necissarily know about a type of device until they experience it for themselves.  I enjoy the part about being able to take a device apart and being able to have it re-used/learn from it.

I find it absolutely hillarious (as it is not costing me the contents of the box, my fee,  or my reputation) that the contents of a box could go bounding around a dark corner of town and out into the street spweing contents about.  In a 3D world this would be very very neat.  Granted this is not included or stated to be a part today, but put my vote in for stuff like this happening.  It is a great interaction between different types of players.

As for the environmental type stuff, it would seem a skill would be in order to search out traps/devices.

I like talking about this a lot.  I can see explosions of goop onto you that does damage to you.  Imagine a mud facial, with a few rocks for spite. *POW* *Splat*

Don't forget that some boxes CAN hurt other players, and if you fail to pop it in town, you will be on the wanted list, and eventually arrested.

I hope we do something like no spitting in town or you go on the wanted board(Like DR), that is extremely funny

And no kicking the beggar! (Darn hooligans! And Divi's always on the board for pilfering (shop stealing).. Learned my lesson for kicking him though)

I have two favorite boxes in DR, the one that turns you into a frog and you have to get a kiss from someone to turn back (it's so funny when you're a frog, sometimes I wish I could stay that way!), and the razor box! It has to do with when I was in my "suicidal phase" of teenage years (14-17), and it was always satisfying to have a box chop off my hands, instead of actually doing it myself. I'd rather not do it myself.. but I always used Divi as a tool to help get rid of my issues, her death at the time meant not mine.

I hate that mime box though. I got stuck in the Shard Gargs once, and it took a little while but someone finally dragged me out of there.

DR helped me in a lot of ways, it let me express myself in ways I never could in real life, and it always let me get away when I needed it the most. Without DR, I think I'd still be in a lot of that major depression, and I'd probably be a lot less mature too. And no fun. Although I think I'm just too weird for people sometimes. Seriously. Liek ahmagad.

How could you leave out turning into a frog and needing someone to kiss you to become nomral again?

Yeah, the list is long, I know. That one I believe was the very "first" trap I ever made for DR.

It's also the reason I posted the list of "all" the traps in the next post.

And if you guys don't quit it, I'm going to have to postpone clan stuff and build something to blow you all up at least!

Stop making me miss traps! /tackle

P.S. Shockwave Trap from DR + Physics engine of HJ = LOTS of bodies flying around. Mwahahahaha!

    It's really neat

If you try to talk, you ribbit

and when you move from room to room, it says you hop

I think you can hop if you jump too but it's been a while so I'm not sure

I usually mess up the flea boxes instead. :/ Those are no fun

Clan stuff huh? Ya know what could be interesting. A light weight client that would let me log into clan chat, without logging into the game it self. Ya know, for those slow days at work when I want to keep up with my clan mates but cant play. Something that would work on my laptop woud be nice.

I recall that EQ did something like that. It was a very very nice tool.

I have another question after rereading Q&A #15, where Stephanie takes the time to explain the different clothing styles of the races.

Obviously HJ is going to try to imbue a sense of history and culture, and dress-style is part of this. But...players will obviously mess that up a bit by wearing what they darned well want to.

But still...will there be any effort to point players towards those clothing/armor choices that best reflect the race they've chosen? Maybe by making non-restrictive subcategories in the costume tool, or showing some examples of suwari/ilvari/stoneborn/human style. I'd love the former sort of organization, as I'm a player who would want very much to match the racial norm, but even if I know what that norm is...I might have a hard time finding the right stuff (if the choices really are as diversified as has been said).

Yes, I know, I'm such a girl. /sigh Well, you know what they say..making games for "female gamers" is the Next Big Thing.

EDIT: ARgh! My paragraphs are being erased when I submit. I look like a posting newb. :(

It was called EQIM. Is was a little clunky.

Interestingly if something like this was to implemented I think jabber would be interesting to use as a base. It's open source (not sure how effective it would be to put it into a closed source MMO) or something similar. At the very least take a peek at the code. GoogleTalk uses jabber as an example of it's very small footprint.

Also, another thing to note in MxO had AIM integrated, although I think that was some sort of business thing considering Time Warner and AOL are basically the same company. But making a built IM chat functionality would be a very interesting feature. Unlike EQ it could be integrated before the game goes live I'd imagine or depending on how evil the code is for chatting perhaps later with the thought of IMing as a future feature. One thing that made EQIM such a clunky (I'm being nice here) was the chat function was never supposed to leave the game, so it was kind of wierd sometimes. Infact some people even hacked the EQIM client and fiddled with it to do things and even made plugins for other IM clients (Trillian). Then SOE changed the code so that wouldn't work anymore.

    Just brainstorming here. :::^D::

Hrm, I honestly am not aware of any type of "direction pointing" when it comes to what can be worn. We were pretty dead set on letting players be... themselves. (Subject to addition at a later time)

And the disclaimer up top allows posts to look like it was posted a forum noob. It's basicly a beta test on the forums. So post away!

This is why I don't use post-it notes I just have a stack of spiral gridpaper notebooks covering my desk :).

Speaking of which if anyone knows of a good online source for National Brand Science Notebooks (33-620) made by Avery Dennison Office Products I'd appreciate it. These are spiral bound notebooks with college ruled on one side and 20 squares/inch graph paper on the other. The only place I've ever been able to find them was the University of Washington bookstore in Seattle and a 6 hour flight is a little far to get a stack of notebooks :)

    On the IM thing:

I like the idea but one thing to point out is that EQ and EQ2 - which both have a version of this feature - both have the chat/login server as a separate system from the actual game servers. If I'm remembering correctly from the EQ1 client it used a modified version of IRC for chat so they were able to allow you to connect directly to the login/chat server and never actually touch the game servers. I'm not sure how our servers are setup so this might not be possible.

    On the clothing thing:

As far as I know there are no plans to limit you to only being able to wear styles appropriate for your race - though this is subject to change. I don't know if it would be possible to add in some sort of clothing filter to allow you to only see race appropriate styles but it can't hurt to ask.

I don't think we've let it slip as to what types of pets will be in game yet.

But the thief/rogue in me agrees with this comment.

Your english was fine by the way. I'm very glad to see someone from Austria here. Vienna no less! Home of some amazing museums, galleries, theaters, restaurants and, if I remember right, a giant ferris wheel in the Prater District! (Wiener riesenrad?)

I deffinetly concur, weasels would be a fantastic pet. Tho my personal taste tends toward cats. In particular the nimble Egyptian Bird Hunting cats. Very tall for such a small cat. Capable of some fantastic vertical jumps. Not to mention notorius for stealing jewlery and anything shiny. I'll be curious to see what kid of ultility skills pets will be enabled with.
