About the GUI. I am not sure if I am all that happy about being at the mod community's mercy. Some great mods were made for EQ II, or was that WOW, can't remember now. But the fact is they were nice but buggy. Especially after patches. So after each patch of the game you would have to run a patch for the mod. That is if the moders had already had time to adjust for the game patch.
So I say great. Gotta love the moding community. But my hope is that the UI is so well thought out and implemented that only the super picky or the adventurous would feel it necessary to down load a moded UI.
Not to mention some mods are unusable for the computer illiterate unsavvy like myself. I immediately look elsewhere when it goes beyond just downloading and running a program. As soon as the instructions start talking about open this file and delete this file before copying A into Z, etc., I don't want to play anymore. I am afraid of messing something up and having a program that takes up disk space but refuses to do anything else.
Sorry if I sound like an ungrateful brat. I just think that customizing your game play is important.
Besides if my friends come over I don't want them to be able to figure out how to play any of my avatars.
Sounds like WoW to me - the modding comunity was very good and the way Blizard implimented the UI was very wise - basically they gave modders the tools to create what they wanted and needed while also freeing up their staff and not having them bogged down with minor tweaks and improvements - clever

If you look at EvE online, you'll see it's basically gank city. Most 0.4 sectors you set foot in you are swarmed with gate campers and if you are not mucho leeto or fast, you had better keep your clone upgraded with good insurance. And EvE is breaking all kind of records. Different genre, but same base.In respect to ganking, look what Dragonrealms and many other games do. If you kill, or get caught stealing, etc. in down, you get to make friends with the judge, and sitting on the nasty ole bale of straw is no fun! If the guards don't get you, you are still flagged, and they will eventually get you once you return to town. However, outside of city limits, most everything is fair game. Grave robbing is always a unique challenge, and i'm interested to see what HJ has in the works. That is always a touchy issue. Then you have spells like Mental Blast (DR) that used to make the castee drop items. There is a whole 'nother set of issues too.. See, these GMs are more busy then we thought :-PI am in BIG FAVOR for a Bounty Hunting system. For much reasons. -Aelrion
First of all let me say that for a PvP focused game I think EvE did a great job.
It's not a gankfest simply because a new player isn't put into an area where he's likely to be killed. The whole sec level thing is explained clearly and simply and you have to make the choice to go into those areas. You can spend your entire gaming life and never be at risk if you choose.
But...there's always a but...even that system can be exploited. An example I saw posted just a few days ago is actually one of the things I was thinking of when I made my comment. An experienced player logs into a high sec area and just shouts in OOC "Where's my momma" to which some newbie replies "In my bed". The high level checks, sees that this is a new player - or at least low level and possibly new - and tells him that's the best response he's gotten all day so he's going to give him some free stuff. He loads up a pod, jettisons it and walks the newbie through getting to him and taking the pod. The newbie is then flagged as a thief and the high level blows him away and pod kills him to boot.
Now put yourself in that newbies position. Was that fun? Does that make you want to continue playing the game? Personally I'd log out and un-install right about then.
I play MMO's because of the community and from the little time I spent in EvE they have a really good community. The problem is that incidents like that and most especially like the big guild infiltration incident leave me with the feeling that while there is this great community I can't really trust any of them.
Also EvE may be breaking records but they're technological records. 20,000 + simultaneous users on a single server is impressive but not the same as the 1 million plus online at one time initially set by the original EQ and since blown out of the water by WoW. EvE is, and always will be, a niche game. The developers seem to know that and seem to actually want it that way. They built the game they wanted to play and they're sticking to it, for which I applaud them even if it's not the game I want to play.
Wow, I never knew EQ set that record. Thanks for the schooling
I'm eager to see how unique HJ is in handling theft from low level players, and theft in general.
I like the idea of stealing. Stealing in a Dragonrealms sense. A skill, one you must work at. Item theft should be a TOSable offense. Targetting 'newbies' for laughs and giggles isn't something I support either, and IMHO shouldn't be allowed. I'm not for scaring anyone away here
I still say it all depends on the gamer though. Myself, I would use being stole from or ganked from a RP tool, and a fun way to get revenge. There is nothing quite like stepping out of the shadows, and splitting someone's head open with a bolt because they earned it
IMHO, Simu has always done a great job handling death, rp, stealing, item theft, graverobbing. I cut my teeth on Simu, i'm a happy camper
are you all seeing what im seeing? can WE build towers on the backs of those turtles?? can WE inhabit those towers? can you offer all the information you know about this? do these turtles walk around in open areas or only instanced areas?

"For archmages who wish to conduct magical research and enchantments, finding a Giant Tortoise with a back broad enough to build a tower on is a stroke of great luck"
Originally posted by HJ-Rowell In regards to negative player interactions, I think instancing for quests is really one of the best ways to do it. I've been gaming MMORPGs since....Hmm, Ultima Online back in '96. And the thing that always annoyed me to no end was waiting for a mob or an object to spawn, only to have someone 10 levels higher zip in, kill/take it, and then zip out. From a gaming stand point, that's Hugely Annoying. Now you'll have to sit there and wait again, and hope someone else doesnt run in and KillSteal your NPC or whatever. From a storyline quest standpoint, you (and your party) are being assigned a mission by an NPC to complete some task. Now, if this task was a top secret type quest, where the mayor is asking you to steal back the town seal from a band of brigands....it would dilute the whole experience if you snuck into the brigand cave, only to find 50 other people wiping out bandits left and right. In that case, the whole experience of the quest is cheapened and trivialized.I can understand where there's a sense of "loss of community" by using instances for quest. But with that loss of having hundreds of people at your beckonned call, you're gaining an entire area, set up just for you, for you to experience the quest as it was meant to be. I know, that once people hop into HJ and experience the quests there, they will no longer compare HJ's Quest Instances to other games' instances. And don't forget, there is still the rest of the world to explore and travel in...and those are not instances and will offer ample opportunities for community building and RP.In regards to PVP and Griefing Newbies...in my own personal thoughts, I think the FAIREST way to handle higher level players killing lower level player is not to allow it....unless the lower level player attacks the higher level player first. Example: Bob the Level 10 Rogue and Dirk the Level 50 Warrior are both PVP flagged and pass eachother on the road. Dirk cannot attack Bob, even though he's PVP Flagged. Bob can attack Dirk, but the second he does, Dirk can beat the snot out of him. Of course there'd need to be a level range which restriction comes into play, but you see what I mean.I've seen too many people in too many MMO's that are just jerks. Plain and Simple. And those people won't be deterred from ganking lowbies no matter what penalties you place on them. Okay, back to work for me.
For me this is the best explainations of two very important issues for me and my friends when we play.
It's one thing that has always confounded me about people not liking instanced areas (if they are done well and used with pre-planning and thought to the Immersion). I played EQ (And UO for a while before that) and I can say with all the might I can muster that having exactly what you said happen is a game killer for me. Infact, many times with uber guilds you get then in rotations on the same spawn (Can you say Efreeti? (EQ)). I think instancing ala CoH/CoV is a great thing. I get to suspend belief that I'm playing a game with my friends in a creepy, wet, nasty cave or whatever for the furtherment of the storyline. to me that's important, not to mention I actually get to kill the badguy and finish the quest before the 27th Expansion comes out.
PvP is another issue for me and my friends. To put it plainly, I don't like it, I don't do it, and I don't care about it. A lot of focus is on PvP in MMOs and a trend is to make the high end content PvP. Oh joy, yippee, woohoo. I understand from a design standpoint PvP must be rewarded if it's included in a game (and let's be honest, if it's not in your design Docs, expect many a customer heart attack to ensue on your forums) but to make it some fort of endgame seems silly. Look at Star Wars Galaxies for instance (It's safer not too). I played that game for longer than I care to admit and loved it for the most part and there was NO content. Ok, bad example. My point, such as it is, is games such as WoW Raiding and PvP are it for End game content. Which is why so many people burn out on it. Sadly Raids are on my list of things I'd rather not do on a constant basis to spend time with my friends and frankly, I suck at PvP. I never seem to be uber enough or have the latest uber gear. Bleh, ranted there. Apologies.
One thing that I'm extremely happy about is your focus on RPing. SWG had a strong RP community the likes I've NEVER seen anywhere before. When that game went south (Like antarctic south) me and many of my friends were crushed. SWG allowed you to community build like no other game and the skill-based system allowed you to customize your character profession-wise so you could do multiple things.
Ok, blah blah. I have some questions. Please forgive me if these are repeat questions but I haven't managed to pile through everything yet (Unofficial FAQ, Website, Forums (here and Official)).
1.) Crafting... I really haven't seen a lot mentioned anywhere about this yet. Is there going to be any at all? I realise that you probably can't answer this but thought I'd ask anyway.
2.) Auction System... I see there will be one (More than likely). Will this be open to all players for a modest listing fee or some such (Ala WoW).
3.) For the love of GOD! When are you guys gonna start putting the info out? hehe It's killing me here.

It more a matter of what's been publicly released info, and whether or not we have worked with what's being asked about. Building unique looking NPC's is something we on the World Building and Questteams tend to do a lot of. Whereas crafting is something I believe the onsite developers are working on. Also, unless we get permission to discuss it. Whatever is on the FAQ is pretty much all we'll discuss as far as game related content goes.
Don't stop asking questions though. Questions give us ideas on what people are looking for in the game.

Well I think a lot of it is, most of our stuff (ideas, systems, etc.) for the game would be stolen, and then it wouldn't be quite as cool when we have it.
I'm sure after the game goes live, the other companies will go absolutely nuts trying to imitate what we do, but it just won't be quite the way Simu does it.

1. Not much information is available on crafting yet so no details but I'll refer you to the FAQ. If you do a quick search you'll see a quote explaining what the goal of the crafting system is going to be.
2. Not a lot of details available yet but it's been mentioned that there will be an auction system and having an auction system that's not available to everyone makes little sense.
Thank you for the answer. I was curious to know one more thing. Will there be hostile humans (like the Defias in WoW)? Playing games I noticed, psychologically talking, that fighting a human being is different from fighting a monster; probably, even knowing that they are no more than a bunch of polygons and scripts, I subcounsciously attribute to them the ability to reason like me. From this point of view I find it more intriguing fighting a human than a monster (and I'm not talking about PvP or duels). Unfortunately I couldn't find pictures of HJ where two humans were fighting!
I still think that the Dead Mines are the funniest instance in WoW.

Thanks for the answers. Since I've posted those questions I've burried myself in the FAQ. I think I've read it like 37 times. It just feels like the week before X-mas. You can see all the presents with your name on them under the tree from friends and family but you can't touch them. Sadly, I can't whip out my exacto-knife and scotch tape in the middle of the night and convertly open a dev for more answers. Well.... I suppose I could but if I'm in jail I can't play HJ!
Hopefully this question has not been asked. I did not scan the hundreds of posts in this thread...
HJ appears to have tremendous potential. I want a game that focuses on exploration, that allows solo and small party groups, and has dynamic content that will keep players like myself going.
Hopefully you have studied the method that Blizzard used to suck hundreds of thousands of players into beta stage of WoW. I realize they were operating on a huge budget. While I don't think it's necessary to have 5 million players to have an excellent game, what is your company doing to generate interest in the game? Will simple word of mouth suffice? (not accusing)
Is the quest system truly dynamic? I would love to see a MMO that incorporates a large amount of dynamic content. As a heavy duty WoW player (now retired) I was devistated by the change in WoW game-play emphasis at the level cap.
I know 2006 has been mentioned as the date, but is it looking like Christmas time frame or later?
Thanks! -Hunt'n

1) We are mainly offsite GM's that don't deal with marketing. (Although, being here is a type of it I suppose.) What the onsite gang has planned for beta and marketing is beyond our scope to answer at this time.
2) Yes. Actions in a previous quest can play a part in future ones. There are other bits as well which I can not mention.
3) I can not give a date other than "When it's ready." Sorry about that. Once we know for sure. www.mmorpg.com will be one of the first places that will know.

It more a matter of what's been puclicly released info, and whether or not we have worked with what's being asked about. Building unique looking NPC's is something we on the World Building and Questteams tend to do a lot of. Whereas crafting is something I believe the onsite developers are working on. Illiminatis hit the nail on the head here.
I just wanted to add that I didn't respond to the post because, I just flat out missed it. Sorry about that.

3. I'll fall back on Royces favorite...soon

Making us wait is evil . Just so you know.
Thanks!

With this topic sitting at 399 posts for a few days, I've decided to go "Monk" on it and round it up to 400. (I feel better already.)
We are all still here for questions.
I also wanted to mention that the onsite and offsite crew are gearing up for e3 in early May. I look forward to seeing some of you there!

So how much of a hand do you have in box-popping, device disabling and them DARK houses? Your boxes in DR were and still are fantastic, so I hope you at least have a lot of input.
