Atlantica Online, without a doubt! It's totally P2W, and the graphics are dated. It used to have the worse publisher ever, Nexon. Not to mention A LOT of forum drama.
I was so addicted to AO until I got walled off at like level 94 and ran out of cash.
I don't get why people still play vanilla wow on private servers and that people actually felt like blizzard should devote their time on bringing it back. I imagine hell to be a place where you were forced to raid molten core over and over with hunters getting first dibs on all melee weapons.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.

We like it up hills both ways in the snow. Some of us played mmorpgs when they were actually designed to be time sinks and enjoy them that way. People without patience and or time to make it through don't last long and we end up with other like minded players at high level.
I understand why people still play UO despite the graphics I can't stand anymore... because there's nothing similar nowadays. All those "UO successors" didn't make it.
I don't understand why people still play DAoC though, when you have way better games nowadays with 3 faction PvP.
PvP is not RvR.. DAOC is not a PvP game. Can you name me any game with a 3 faction RvR system? I can't think of a single one.
For my vote it would have to be EQ2. When you take everything that EQ2 was and bear witness to what the developers have done to the game over the past 10 years it's shocking to me why there would be a single person left on this planet that would play it. It is the game that:
1. Went F2P first while still having a monthly sub plus still making players pay for the game along with a cash shop making players buy stuff.. think about that one. 2. Puts out expansions with extremely low content but yet still commands AAA prices for the expansion. 3. The first game I've ever seen that released an expansion where all the mobs drop the same item table (which had a low count of items in it).. and yet still commanded a AAA price. 4. One of the few games that required players to pay for back expansions to come back to the game, at one point I calculated that I would have to pay over 300 dollars just to get back into the game. 5. Owned by a company that is owned by the Russian mob which the US froze assets and effectively EQ2.. but yet somehow that got real quiet.
Just saying that this was a great game that got into the wrong hands and basically got destroyed.. but yet people still play it.

Ganking noobs isn't PvP either, thats just being a carebear.
Real PvP is in an FPS game like Planetside 2 (edit: That and EVE Online since even a noob can kill a pro). No amount of armor, weapons or level or "skills" (except actual PERSON skill) will help you win if you are bad.
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
Istaria or when it was released it was called Horizons I believe (I have a bad memory!). I do remember beta testing this game wayyy back and it is still somewhat kicking around the MMO World.
Horizons was the game that made me lose all hope in the genre. The direction I want had few attempts and little money.
Wow is one of many. The first time Wow released i went from trying out EQ2 and then tried Wow and i quit the first day thinking, who on earth would play this over EQ2.
Several other cash shop type games, most of those imo are mediocre at best and i would have thought those games would fold up shop after the publishers contract was up.Tera is one example and yes i would have thought UO would have folded up shop,it was dated in many ways so i figured people would go play more modernized games with better tech better graphics etc etc.
I thought AOC after the mass exodus would have folded up shop, odd to see it hanging around.Sooooo many others, like i said all the cash shop games and all those KS'r games imo are nothing more than quick cash grabs,H1Z1 is another.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

One of the devs spoke somewhere about Istaria (previously Horizons). It was either a Reddit thread (pretty sure this is far more likely) or maybe here on MMORPG.com. But I'm almost positive it was Reddit...in any case
He said the leader (managers I guess + CEO) of the business kept promising insane things to the public, and the developers (which the person who posted on reddit was one) kept going "no this can't be done with current technology, stop promising things that we can't keep".
So it wasn't the devs fault, but the managers who kept wanting them to do insane things AND publicizing it to everyone to create false hype. But none of the promises could be done at the time. And they also had a low budget, so that made it worse
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
btw, Istaria is now owned (pretty sure) by a team of volunteers. So they are keeping it alive with the 2nd smallest MMO playerbase (only Ryzom is smaller in terms of numbers).
Though don't quote me 100% on that one, I'm not entirely sure if I'm remembering the right game. But I sorta recall Istaria being owned by volunteers now and they keep developing the game. That might be why its still alive.
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
There was a lot to like about Horizons/Istaria. The crafting was one of the best in the genre and made for an interesting economy. You could craft almost everything in the game from weapons to spells, and then apply traits to them to modify them. I made a living crafting dragon sorceries with good traits, because most people balked at the crazy vendor price.
Unfortunately the game did have its problems, which lead to the ultimate MMO problem: low pop. Playing an MMO alone is not a fun experience.

Arguing semantics is the new in these days huh?
It's not semantics, it's 2 different play styles. If you don't know the difference between the 2, then you no nothing about DAOC. DAOC did have a PVP server, but it was not the core game play and only a small percentage of the playerbase played on it.
Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds. Not sure why anyone ever played this, but they have been since 1996 and they still are I believe.
Woah there buddy.. Nexus TK was an amazing game. Literally one of the first Mmorpgs I played and the amount of Roleplaying in it is still astonishing.

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
You can't believe why people are still playing one of the most popular MMORPGs on the planet that periodically gets free story expansions and also larger paid expansions?

RF online.
That is 1, I'm actually shocked it's still running in some capacity. Didn't it get shut down after a year or 2 because of licensing issues? But to say that it's 'way better than DAOC' is a bit of a.. no it's a huge stretch.

Yea, i never got around to playing Nexus TK but i did play Dark Ages though. That game was built for roleplaying. Player run religion, politics, if you wanted to be a class, you had to find another player that was that class to guide you to become that class.
Skill leveling as you used them. An actual elemental advantage system. That shit was just filled with so much greatness. Then Kru ruined it.
I'm sure Nexus TK had a lot of similarities given Nexon made both of them.
I can't believe that people, myself included, are still playing the MUD, GemStone IV. It's been around since 1987 or 1988. All of my friends in-game pay $40 a month for the premium sub, and there's actually a $50/mo. option that some people go for.

That's just not a smart decision. I'm sorry but even paying 15 a month for a MUD is like...what?
