League of Legends News - Riot Games Co-Founder Marc Merrill took to Twitter with an out-of-the-blue question to his followers: "Should we build a[n] MMO? Yay or nay?" Many presume it means an MMO based on League of Legends with the provided link to an interactive game map: "Explore the world ranging from the briny ports of Bilgewater to the soaring peaks of Mount Targon".

Wait .. wait .. wait .. you mean to say that Riot games does not consider LoL an MMO ... Thats gonna be a shock to some here ....:) Also , very strange from the 3k responses of LoL fans that they all support the idea are enthusiastic of it , and dont think they are currently playing an MMO in LoL .. weird huh

Anyhow , sure they may as well throw there hat in , they have the resources and backdrop and some talented guys working .....

PS .. Make an updated UO plzzz .. these weak attempts we keep getting are not cutting it

As long as it's more than just WoW + League of Legends, YES PLEASE. I think they've been trying to make a LoL MMO for ages, and this is likely Marc's way of testing that idea.

I don't play LOL and know nothing about the lore or universe but I'd like to see them make a MMO just based on the fact i know they have the bank roll to make a big budget MMO and attempt to compete with WOW. Just don't make another survival crafting game or some sort of Battle royale bullshit, please for the love of God.

I would like a League of Legends MMO, as long as there are no Yordles

Ive thought about this for a long time! It honestly would be a great idea that could easily turn out to be a new GROUNDBREAKING MMORPG orrrrr a devastating loss for Riot lol

Tbh, the way they're treating the Lore nowadays is tipping toward some type of MMO.

Al ot of the shit they tell us about Lore wise is useless in the games current state.

I'm down for it and would love to play!

It would be unique game if player (summoner) can transform into the heroes and fight in a massively battle RvR .

LoL kind of hit a wall nowadays so i think it high time for them to make a new LoL by turn the base game into MMORPG .

I thought about Valve and DOTA2 and building an MMO recently, making it available through Steam only could be a huge thing. But another highly succesful MOBA developer could do it to, go go Riot Games I say.

It is just huge resource waste....'

I would never discourage anyone from making an MMO. But...But... Make sure you know what you're getting in to. It's a fickle, abusive realm where the forums are more deadly than the pvp (or pve for those who prefer). If you can handle that, make sure you come up with a sustainable idea. A lot of pie in the sky stuff, fails. Start reasonably and build on it.

Ideally, I would want a faction based MMO, with players siding with Demacia, Noxus, or Ionia.

What he probably means is, should we market League of Legends as if it were already an MMORPG?  </sarcasm>

Kind of like, if you have to ask the question then the answer has to be no. It doesn't even sound like they have an idea to base an MMO on, i don't think LoL is really suitable, the game imo is kind of boring so basing an MMO on the LoL IP is probably going to be something of a stretch. Riot has its fingers in lots of pies however so maybe they have a new IP in mind? either way it takes a lot more to make an MMO than just being open to the idea of making one :/

Well as the concept of MOBA's evolved from MMOs and RTS, it would be nice of them to return the favour and actually make a MMO.

One of the amusing things you will get is things which don't make sense in a MMO that work fine in a MOBA. Just reading the above we find their is a port named Bilgewater. So who named it that, not the mayor I bet. :)

A few million humans tend to disagree with your assertion that LOL is boring. Just saying if you are using that as your only potential negative to the MMO idea, then it is a pretty weak point. Obviously, I am not attacking your opinion, I just think that there is enough interest in LOL at this that it would support an MMO.

Also, for a MOBA game, there are heaps of backstory and lore involved already, and a good story is arguably a good point for starting an MMO.

Taking into consideration the current state of affairs of the MMORPG Genre, I would say; what's to lose? At worst it will be another stale WoW clone in a LoL package, and there is always a chance that it could shatter the mold. Who knows?

To the people that like to imgaine they are somehow industry insiders, outside talent can be hired to polish or guide an MMORPG production, if Riot somehow did not have resident knowledge on the matter, they certainly know how to hire the right people and make a successful venture. There is plenty of talent out there looking for work at the moment, so I doubt they are hurting for resumes.

Not saying I would play a LoL MMO, but I would at least look into it.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

I personally would love to play a LoL MMO. They have teased the idea in the past, and I think yesterday they teased the interactive map of the world that League is based around, which leads me to believe that they are further into this idea than they are letting on. As making an entire interactive map for something that largely takes place on one tiny map, makes almost no sense.

Riot can be the company that brings the genre back into the AAA market if they can pull this off correctly. They have so much funding from Leagues income and Tencent, plus the fanbase for the game is already huge, and seeing the comments on the LoL subreddit talking about an MMORPG, there were so many people saying they would love this idea, it just adds up to a success.

Who knows what will happen, but the characters and world seem diverse enough to support this idea, plus a company with one of the biggest games on the market, who can put funding towards projects like this, could make something great.

I don't want them to make one. LoL had an interesting story to start but they dumbed it down to make it easier to do storylines. This just became blah to me and I lost interest. Where there were stories that I thought were new and different which made them fun has become clichés that I have read so many times before. No thank you for their story telling now.

Could be great but it'll take ~5 years.

This is why I'm pretty sure they wouldn't bring it up like this unless they had already been working on it for a while. It's such a casual "are you guys interested in an MMO", but no company would generate hype like that if they hadn't had a groundwork already down. The hype would fall off drastically so fast.

    Sure, the more the merrier.
That said, it's Riot, it's going to be a mass market oriented MMO. Most likely not really for me.
