I Can't be the only person who honestly does not give a shit what the story or lore is in WOW or any MMO for that matter, Am I ? Been playing since Vanilla and barely read quest text, If it wasn't for animated cut scene's i still wouldn't know the stormwind king is dead and his brat son now leads my gnome into battle .
For me MMO's are all about the Questing, Loot & end game. I like the thrill of getting new gear and taking down a difficult opponent. As far as who I'm fighting and why, I could care less.

Well, I suspect a lot of players are like you, but at least some players love stories and are invested in the lore, flawed as it may be. It shouldn't be a reason to be dismissive of them -- they play the game too. It's just another type of player from the type you are.
I read quests and I follow them and enjoy the story and lore immensely. I also create and enjoy the character's lore and why they exist and I get immersed in my race and areas and I enjoy looking around me and realising I am in an orc or elf in an orcish or elven area. I'm excited to follow the story and I play MMORPGs for this reason among others.
If I didn't then one game will be no different from another. I have fond memories of completing harder quests and watching the story unfold and really love it when it is a well told lore or sensible and fulfilling quest line. I dislike it when they truncate quests for expedience and fast dungeon delving it saddens me when the story loses its impact and relevance as a result.
I feel like no one has actually played through the undead area while leveling or at least read the quests back when Garrosh was still warchief. People seem to think Sylvanas will care about how her actions would make her look in the eyes of the horde, without thinking that she's always cared about the undead above anything else. Who's to say that she's not just killing the night elves just to resurrect them. She did get some kind of item from Helya during Legion, so that might allow her to do it. Even back in undead early questing, she was always wanting to raise the dead alliance but Garrosh was like "it wouldn't be honorable." I'd define her actions as "morally grey." If anyone read the 3 sister's comic though, she's not gonna go a garrosh route though, that's all I'll say about that. Besides, everyone is so focused on "good" (light) vs "evil" (void) but forget death rules them both.
So what is the in game consequences of this? Is it just story, or is it driving new content or the like?
It's hard to say long-term, but from playing the beta basically of the two original continents one has gone all horde, the other all alliance -- well, save the BC Belf/Space Goat starting areas, which are in their own instance anyway. The alliance has lost Teld, since it's one big burned out matchstick now, and the Horde has lost (or will, anyway) Undercity, Brill, and the surrounding areas.
As with other zones that have changed majorly in the last couple of expansions, you can still go back to how they were via Bronze Dragon timey-whimey stuff, but in "current time" a couple of racial capitals went kersplat. Overall this should be a much bigger deal for Sylvanas -- ultimately The Foresaken were her primary powerbase and there were already issues there, losing Undercity ain't gonna help her position any -- while for the Nelfs, who knows? They can take over Elwin forest or something.
That, and it looks like it's time to start a pool on what the raid where we kill Sylvanas will be called ("Battle for Orgrimar, Redux"?) and exactly which patch it'll be where Arthas' sis gets nominated to replace her.
It's too bad, really, Sylvanas deserves better, much better, and at this point any twist Blizz pulls out of their arse is going to have to be epic to have a chance of redeeming things.
Personally I won't be holding my breath.
Honestly I will never understand why it is Blizz can't get it through their heads that it has been years, most of WoW's lifespan in fact, since the whole Faction War thing made any sense at all. Nah, instead of recognizing that it makes no sense to have the factions at each other's throats right after a successful war against The Legion forced them to work together more than ever, let's come up with some increasingly ludicrous (Tossing burning rocks at a magically defended skycraper of a tree from twenty miles away? Seriously?) and out-of-character actions as possible and tell everyone it's 'morally grey'.

Im not being dismissive or judging anyone , If anything im judging myself ( people need to do that more these days imo ) . I Wish i could get into the lore and story, everyone is so passionate about it on these boards it looks like fun. I try to read the text and follow its just so dam boring, TO ME.. I'm going to research this Sylvanus today and try make sense of whats going on, right now she just comes of sexually frustrated and angry
Blizzard reminds me of myself at age 5. Seemingly the only thing I could find to do with my toys was to use them to destroy my other toys. Blizzard's "changes" to WoW, the lore, whatever, is always just to tear something up. So none of this surprises me.

Yeah, that'll work...
It does seem as if they are having real issues, but don't worry it is not that bad (I can't remember the game) but a poster was explaining how they were doing missions on the instructions of a zombie head with no idea why they should do so.
What needed to happen was a lull in hostilities before they introduced reasons for the hostilities to flare up again. Indeed that lull could have been all story and hardly seen in game.
Reasons for the flare up, well the Horde does a sneaky betrayal and...Ok that's just an old Alliance Druid talking. But you can use anything from historical land dispute to resource squabbling to get that ball rolling.
My grief is that it's so poorly written. It's even worse than the Garrosh goes back in time story line in my book. Remember that Sylvanas argued AGAINST mana bombing Teramore, because she said it would anger and unite the Alliance and make them possibly retaliate against the closest Horde target in Alliance territory... which is Undercity. And now... she just did it. Doesn't make any sense.
Another thing not making any sense... if the Undead, Blood Elves and Goblins engage in that kind of genocidal actions, it can be logically explained. By hatred and greed notably. For the trolls, it already becomes hard to believe. But for the Orcs and Tauren, it doesn't make any sense at all. Where's the very strong sense of Honor they have when they help burning down the habitat of thousands of innocent civilians, roasting them alive in the process ?
This said, if Sylvanas wanted to unite the Alliance and divide the Horde, she succeeded.
I'm actually reading the book "Before the Storm" to see if it gives any sense to this crazy story line, and I'm not impressed so far. Christie Golden never was an amazing writer anyway (she already butchered Arthas), so I'm not very surprised either.
We had great story lines in Mists of Pandaria and Legion, but for now, this one sucks at least as hard as Warlords of Draenor for me.
I'm very disappointed.
Maybe a LotRo approach is better, that IP protected itself, Turbine could not make up any cobblers they liked just to move a story along or do something "cool" in game.

More fascinating is horde player's concern at now being painted as "the bad guys." Some are saying they are ashamed of being affiliated with the horde.
Things must have really changed, they always were the bad guys. Sure, Alliance had their bad side, but nothing at all compared to the Horde.
All just a game to me. In EVE my characters race might have been slavers, but I didn't get concerned when CCP made it possible for an actual player to assasinate the Amarr Empress in sight of thousands of other players.
I mean, it was a nice touch, but the real lore was what the Goons were up to and would Pandemic Legion side with them or against?
Getting deeply into the story and lore does help explain how players can stick with it for so many years, like having the next volume of your favorite novel series release.

The lore does matter in any RPG, stop pulling my chain.
The quality of Wow lore has been questioned many times before the reason I asked the question was that lore to often jumps to the tune of what the devs want this month in any MMO.
It seems from what @tawess said it will have an in game effect. The question does arise, did the devs think its cool to do the things he mentioned and the lore was written accordingly? If so that's a poor way to run a MMO, they may all do it but it is still poor.
Well after the players accepted the pandas - this is worst possible. Also it is great for sure - years of writing and rewriting. The question is how the lore affects the gameplay - and the answer is it does not, except for the people who play WoW with imagination instead with fingers and rational thinking. Then the goals of the gameplay become different.
I still can't bring myself to play a Panda. I did make a Night Elf Monk and had fun with it but a Panda, just can't do it.

LotRO is based on a pre-existing IP that has a beginning, middle and end. The MMO takes place inbetween or on the fringes of that story.
So, how does that apply to WoW in any way, shape or form?

I personally don't care about Horde being the "bad guys", I play both sides and Alliance have been asses too in the past, but what I don't like is that it is poorly written with a lot of nonsense. And I'm even more pissed because Sylvanas is a character I like a lot and she deserves SO much better than this mess, which I'm afraid will be her end.
Garrosh was a prick, and despite his crappy story line, I didn't waste a tear for him. But Sylvanas could be as epic as the Lich King mixed up with some sprinkles of Thrall, if properly written.
Having really only played for 18 months or in the first two years (quitting as BC launched) and mostly raiding I don't think I got much of a chance to see the lore evolve.
Even when I returned for a month when Cata launched I spent most of it feverishly trying to level to Max in mostly dungeons with friends or the DF tool still never noticed the lore.
Also flying was in Cata, and I abused it shamelessly, dropping on top of quest objectives and bouncing out, of course not really taking any time with the lore.

We've seen much worse abuse of lore as of late , Look at ESO with One Tamriel as an AD i can now go grovel at the EP Kings feet , and clean his villages for him for a shiny trinket , when i should be killing him and him me .. for ex..Everyone is the same now just different skin .. such rubbish ..imo
At least with the change Blizz made here it has generated an interest and can change and alter the story line , with what Zeni did to ESO there is no fixing that mess and the community is complacent in accepting its shit ...

That is how most people play MMOs - rationally, as they do in any game. I read the lore only if it affects my progression, competition or cooperation. But other people seems create some own delusional world in the game world, which even overcomes the illusion of the game. They play MMOs for the solo personal story - actually they do no play MMO, but anyway. And this is my biggest problem with all the WoW clones - most players actually play a singleplayer game.
As long as millions of players are happy and willing to keep paying for a sub I doubt Blizzard is too concerned about how they chose to play the game.
(Well, except for that weird cybersex roleplaying, I suspect they aren't so keen with that)

Tawess, a breakaway faction of the Forsaken was behind the attack at that gate in Northrend where the Alliance and Horde were together. I still think Sylvanas and the forsaken are a vindictive lot.

Well 5 mil. is not so big number as it was. Also most of those people simply have played only WoW and WoW clones.
So they probably cannot even imagine a real MMO game.
Definitely their happiness is not a problem at all. But the stupidity of the developers and the publishers who are trying to repeat the WoW success is a big issue.
In fact I like the WoW books, specially from R A K, but the game is terrible as MMO.
5 M still makes them larger than most other MMORPGS and they really don't have to spend much to keep making a good profit.
We have yet to see a MMORPG design that might bring in Fortnite numbers, but if we ever do (God forbid) my guess it won't look very much like something you or I will enjoy playing.

I'd play a Fortnite MMO personally. That be awesome. Get rid of grinding, levels, skills and all the junk I said in other posts and just focus on what the vast majority of PvPers want...PvP.
Its why PvPers demand PvP in every MMO and want only sandbox PvP MMOs and not PVE sandbox MMOs. They only want PvP...and no company has taken advantage of that and make a huge open sandbox world just like Fortnite for the massive PvP playerbase that is left with junk MMOs where they need to grind before PvP.
its why leagues of legend and fortnite are so popular...pure pvp...none of the other junk that stinks up the MMO genre.

Actually I think Planetside 1 and 2 were very close to what you describe, yet really weren't all that popular.
Perhaps because players who favor that style of PVP already have plenty other genres to satisfy their needs.
Also I suspect MMO combat is a bit too zergy for those who favor a "fair fight"

Well, I remember Planetside 1 being a lot more popular than PS2. That was a pretty big thing, though of course not fortnite levels. But it was a long time ago.
I think most people just don't like SOE, so they avoid their games on that basis. That was and still is a huge thing for why Planetside 2 and other SOE games don't get big numbers.
The other problem (and as big as SOE name attached to it) is Planetside 2 is optimized terribly with a lot of lag (at least when I played). AND on top of that, it needs a very high end PC which is another major obstacle. It was one reason WoW did so well (and Fortnite is the same) cause almost anyone could play WoW without needing a top PC to play it.
Any game that needs a high end PC to play, or even just a mid grade PC...its not gonna see the numbers ever, of games like WoW and Fortnite where anyone can play it no matter what PC they have (to a point of course).
I think Planetside 2 was on Playstation as well though, but I dunno how big the numbers were/are on there. But as far as PC games go...the reason planetside 2 isn't popular is simply cause most gamers have bad PCs.
You won't see someone say their PC sucks (except maybe rarely) on a dedicated game forum (because dedicated gamers tend to be able to upgrade)...but the quiet AND majority play non-intensive games since that is what their PCs can run. Especially in other countries where buying a game can itself be a single year worth of wages just to buy a game let alone upgrade a PC. Hence again, Fortnite and WoW can see such huge numbers.
Other reasons too of course, but the two reasons above (SOE+high system requirements) would definitely be up there for why SOE games are small player wise compared to other MMOs.

Perhaps because players who favor that style of PVP already have plenty other genres to satisfy their needs.
Also I suspect MMO combat is a bit too zergy for those who favor a "fair fight"
