Guild Wars Sucks

anarchyartanarchyart Member Posts: 5,378

It's not an MMORPG, it's Diablo 2 with a Lineage 2 skin. It shouldn't be on this site and it's appalling that it holds 2 of the top spots on the ratings.

Bottom line, it's not an MMORPG and it doesn't belong here. Give those 2 spots for games that have persistant worlds, or at least the ability to play with more than a handful of other people at the same time.

    Maybe traditional mmorpg's suck.

Maybe more action is just what the doctor ordered.

Most of the MMO's out there are garbage. I'm glad at least GW is doing something different.

I'm going to agree with that and say guild wars breaks the boundaries of what was once considered to define mmorpg.

Diablo 2 was actually a kick ass game that sucked once blizzard made the expansion. Well, all they needed to do was make the expac and then not allow people to farm bosses and took care of a few hacks which would have taken about 5 minutes to fix.

I still think like at least 40k people still play diablo 2, then again it's riddled with hacks and dupes because blizzard doesn't give a crap about game that doesn't bring them money.

Also the more I think of it the more I think WoW is like three-dimensional diablo 2 with crafting and a persistant world with races and crappier PvP.

I think that if you give people a choice between playing a

    massively multiplayer ROLE PLAYING game

    and a

    massively multiplayer FIGHTING game

%99 will go play the fighting game.

I don't consider myself an MMORPG'er, but I still play MMORPG's, because most of them are just 3d Diablo.

As far as I'm concerned, EQ SWG FF etc can all take a long jump off a short pier, all of them suck.

I'm done with grinding and camping. Fighting is the only cool part of any game, thats all I want to do and not waste time with bullschit like fishing/mining/etc.

I don't know why everyone hates GW for being something different than all of the terribly boring mmorpg's out. Just because it doesnt follow the same exact formula as other games people say oh its not an mmorpg. While I'll agree it's not a traditional mmorpg, its not just diablo 2 with a new skin, not even close. I played diablo 1 and 2 a lot, and GW even more. I hated diablo 2, I thought it was a terrible game, and I love GW. ntm Diablo 2 only allowed 8 people in a single world, GW allows much more in some of the pvp areas.

GW may not be a traditional mmorpg, but people will keep calling it a mmorpg no matter how much you complain, and for the lsat time its not just diablo 2 with new graphics, its not even close.

    Hey fizzle my nizzle,

what do you mean by MMOFighting game? Can you describe one?

For me, fighting is cool, but I love PvP and not only the combat PvP but economic, political, etc PvP. . . too bad space isn't my preferred genre or else i'd be an EVE fanboi.

No, it does not suck.  It is a very well made game with a lot of depth.   It is true that it is not a MMORPG, and should never have been included here on this site.  DDO (which does Suck) is not a MMORPG and also should not be included on this site.

But, GW does not suck.  Now, I don't like it, and I don't play it anymore.  Because it isn't a MMORPG.  But for what it is, it is really good.

I'm not a guild wars player (yet anyhow, maybe soon since I'm currently not playing any online games) but I do not believe they have ever claimed to be an MMORPG. I will shamelessly steal the following entry from Wikipedia that addresses that exact subject :

Though often referred to as an MMORPG, ArenaNet coined the term CORPG (Competitive/Cooperative Online Role-Playing Game) to describe Guild Wars.
This title describes the competitive PvP-oriented (Player vs. Player)
design of the game or the cooperative PvE-oriented (Player vs.
Environment) instances of the game, as well as serving to differentiate
it from the standard, subscription-fee-based, MMORPG genre. Guild Wars
does not support hundreds of players in combat, instead having large
towns where people form groups of eight or fewer players who then fight
in their own unique instance of the game world. "Guild Wars is not an
MMORPG," said Jeff Strain, producer of the game.

In terms of how that relates to whether or not it should be on this site - well, that is a little bit of a grey area. If defined by the title, MMORPG.com, of this site alone, no, it wouldn't belong here. However I think the spirit of the site allows for it entirely: it is a game that is played across a network instead of locally, it supports multiple players, it has a PvE storyline and PvP as well. It may not be a classic MMORPG, but it does consist of many of the key defining elements

Then again, I'm not defensive of the rpg side of things at all, have never cared for it in the active sense (ie my characters personality is mine, it is nothing more than a controllable avatar to me, no DnD in my blood). I would be just as fine if they redefined MMORPG as MMOSIG (social interaction gaming, just something I'm making up here to my knowledge) which would be a better catch-all, and usually a better description of the nature of the gameplay, while still not laying exclusive definition to it's style.

Guild Wars does suck, but not for the fact that its not an mmorpg.

  • anarchyartanarchyart Member Posts: 5,378

Warcry if you lost your respect for me because I have different tastes than you then it was never wanted in the first place. Not everyone likes the same stuff. It might not suck for you, but for me, it stands for the decline of MMORPG's as we know it and the dash for cash. Guild wars is an online fighting game with a quest based levelling treadmill. If that rocks for you, I'm happy for you, but I want more than Team Street Fighter Online. And I sure don't agree that Team Street Fighter Online should be on mmorpg.com.

Just my opinion. And LOL Remy

Is just a mater of taste,i perfer pvp games without instances like lineage, some people dont they like guild wars, and many instances, imercive quests.

Gild wars is a street fighter online? Can yo guive me an example?

Have you tried GW?I tried for a few time, and it can be an amazing pvp game if you do skill combos with your group.

    Is a difrent game,difrent market.

    I call it inovation.

I see you've returned to your holier then thou, attitude.  If you think the reason he lost respect for you.  Is simply because you don't like GW's.  Then you are probably alot further gone then I thought.  When I read your original post.  Which I do agree with the guy.  It's simply nothing more then a poor attempt at trolling.  GuildWars has been in the released game list for how long now?  Has been on the ratings list for how long now?  Riiight that's what I thought.   Sadly your attempt at trolling gets two thumbs way down.  Surprised you couldn't pick up anything better from the trolls, you were so fond of picking on.

Heh AA... I dunno if I agree with you there :)
It's got 1.5 million players.  In the cities you *do* technically 'play the game' in the form of completing and getting quests.  Crafting armor/weapons.  Geting weapons/equipment enchanted and enhanced.  Meeting other players to form guilds, alliances and groups.  All the while you are physically *in the game* not in  a web interface or even a 'chat' interface waiting for a 'launch room' to open so you can play on a game hosted from anotehr player's PC... no it's all on the same servers though possibly in different Instances.

    It's played Online

    It's a Role Playing Game

So by definition it *is* an MMORPG.... granted not a more traditional one but it fits the definition.

DDO is even less of an MMORPG but I don't see people griping about that.

So saying it doesn't belong on this site is silly.  It, in point of fact, *is* an MMORPG... whether you like the game, hate the game or are indifferent to the game it fits the definition of an MMORPG.

Indeed, it is controversial that Guild Wars fills 2 places in the top seven on this site, but the game definately does not suck. In fact, I feel that it's one of the most technically accomplished pc games I've ever played, and delivers exactly what the developers promised it would.

But yes, (by my own definition of MMORPG) Guild Wars does not belong on the list . No need to be arrogant and elitist about it, either.

Everyone is being mislead by the title and aren't getting the real message across.
Is Guild Wars really an MMO and should it be listed here on MMORPG.com?
This isn't really a discussion about whether the game sucks or not.
IMO, this game doesn't really belong here on this site.

Actually, by that definition, it's an ORPG, just as stated by the devs. There is nothing massive about playing with only 7 other players at once. The games large size doesn't make it automatically make it an MMO. If we are going to define games by the genre to the very core of the definition, then games like Halo are RPGs because we play the role of Masterchief. The game may have some MMORPG elements, such as partying, crafting, and guilds, but it doesn't have the core feature of an MMO where you aren't limited to playing with just a few other people at a time in an isolated instanced area.

Funny how people get jealous because Guild Wars rates higher than their favorite MMO, so they try to get it taken off the site. lol

Who cares how they rate? If you enjoy it that's all that counts.

Funny when someone brings up topics about Guild Wars being an mmo or not, people always think that person is jealous of GW's success.

I think GW is a great game, but its definitly not an MMO. heck, we don't call Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst an mmo either, right? Its rediculous that a game that isn't an mmorpg to even start with is on top of the list.

While I fully enjoy Guild Wars and think it's a great game, I do believe that it does BELONG here but it does not belong on the rankings.

Guild Wars is in a class all it's own and really this would be the best place for it, but I do not believe that it should compete in rankings w/ the other true MMORPGs out there. This will lead people to believe it's an MMO and go into it looking for an MMO when infact, it is nothing like what they are looking for. I have even seen posts here saying "WELL WHY IS IT ON THIS SITE THEN!?"

    "Guild Wars Sucks"

    How original ...

Anyway no I don't think it's a MMORPG. It's about as much MMORPG as if they decided to add StarCraft here.

I dislike calling games MMORPG's just because you have a character that you can level inside of them. I think it requires more to gain the MMORPG title.

Anyway GW is an excellent game.

so are you saying you want companies to keep doing the same a;sdlkf thing.  level grind is fun  i want to pay people to do work lol.  kill identical mob 500th is SOOO  FUN....  sure you might do that in guild wars but its under differnt circumstances each time,  with required variations in strats, and its not to raise a stupid number.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

This might be the 1st time I actually agree with you Snake. While it does resemble a typical MMO in a few ways, it is infact in a class in its own.
