So graphics, controls, AI, etc are standard questions for games, but what about sound in HJ? How much effort and resources are being spent on sound effects and musical score? Because both of those make a HUUUGE difference with immersion, as well as emphasizing emotional "tones" for various environments.
As someone who has played many online games, I understand what you are talking about when it comes to sound. In fact when I play most games, I just turn the sound off and listen to music. Walk through an area in most games and you can close your eyes and have no idea where you...they all sound the same...maybe some wind blowing every 30 seconds and maybe a wolf howling in the distance. With HJ however, when I play the demo areas I listen to the sound, because of the fact that it pulls you into the game. Actually it pulls you into the world you are playing in. If you close your eyes in the middle of a forest in HJ...guess what??? You can see the forest you are standing in.
Hero's Journey will go into beta testing later in 2006 and be launched commercially in mid-2007. Simutronics will announce retail distribution plans and local online partners at a later date.

Sure. I don't know if you've seen any screenshots of the character creation screen but there is basically a triangle with the names of the 3 current races (Human, Ilvari and Burian) at the points. You can click on the circles at the ends of those points to make the character a "purebred" member of that race or you can left click and drag to move the little pointer along the legs of the triangle to make a "half breed" between two races. But where it gets really interesting is when you left click and drag around the middle of the triangle to get a mixture of all three races.
The 4th race, the Suwari (cats, sorry no lizards) aren't part of this for obvious reasons.
Currently your race will not really impact your "stats" because we're trying to keep what your character looks like seperate from their abilities and skills as much as possible. It's one of the things we're going to have to explain over and over to those that have been playing MMO's for a while.
I can see why the Suwari were left out but it was fun playing with the idea for a bit.
Suppose if all four races were added to the slider you'd get something that moans "killlll meee." after character creation.
....which might not be a bad idea for some monster to encounter in, say, the isolated community that hasn't had contact with anyone for a few generations. ...sorry I've been reading Lovecraft

When you do something right people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
I posted this question in the Hero's Hall forums...
One thing I'm confused about in the "Triangle" is that "Humans" are presently (as far as we know) composed of Old Bloods (normal humans) and Togs which are somewhat different. I assume that "Human" in the hybrid former refers to the Old Bloods. Is this correct? If so, what about the Togs?
Basically, the biggest question is about RP. Simu's always done well for its love for the RP community. I know players are money, and it's the biggest reason that griefers in other games are just given a slap on the wrist, but in DR and such anyone that makes an effort to disrupt RP were met with extreme prejudice. Will it be the same in HJ? There's a larger budget in graphical MMOs than there was in the MUDs, after all. Banning people as much as they really need will be a big loss of money.
I also wonder about PvP. I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of it. That's mainly because it's always done poorly. Like... you fight, die, run back from a graveyard, and fight again. It generally only ends when one player gets tired of the repetitiveness and goes away, if they can. I also hate being ganked when I'm just minding my own business or RPing in the wild.
Okay. I have a question that involves the grouping together of multiple levels... I guess a couple questions.
A) If 5 people group together, they are all raised to the level of the highest level?
Do you think that strategy is wise? What I mean is if a level 5 and a 75 group, the 5 is now 75... That would make the level 5 get bored quickly of high level things so when he gets there he's going to be longing for all the stuff he missed at level 5. Wouldn't it be more logical to give them choises?
Option 1 - All members are raised to the highest member's level. This would be good for getting some help with endgame things, but It would be far too powerful in my opinion.
Option 2 - All members are lowered to the lowest member's level. This would be great for helping your buddies level up, and not miss any game story. The high level would gain experience at a somewhat adjusted rate.
Option 3 - All members are raised or lowered to the mean average level of the group. (Level 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 would all become level 15). This would be the most logical in my opinion. But it would make mid-levels overplayed and very boring.
Option 4 - All members are raised or lowered to the median average level of the group. (If there are 5 level 20s and 1 level 100, the 100 would come down to level 20) - or - tossing the highest and lowest level and averaging the remaining levels. This would be good for targeting a specific quest or having a high level (more real experience) help you with a specific quest.

That would make the level 5 get bored quickly of high level things so when he gets there he's going to be longing for all the stuff he missed at level 5. Wouldn't it be more logical to give them choises? I have not played a game where at any point or time I longed for lvl 5 content. It's generally so dull, thoughtless and the ultimate in "filler" content. And for good reason. in most games you're only lvl 5 for like a hour or 2. Killing rats? Nah I could pass on that. Really. Option 1 - All members are raised to the highest member's level. This would be good for getting some help with endgame things, but It would be far too powerful in my opinion. Generally speaking, and the way that HJ is planning on doing it a "raised" lvl 50 is not going to be as powerful as a "natural" lvl 50. The whole purpose of it is so that freinds that play differently, or have different amounts of time to play can still play together. Not got get a bunch of lowbies powerleveled ASAP. And hopefully, the "Endgame is going to be dramatically different than in most MMO's, and not the only thing worth doing. Option 2 - All members are lowered to the lowest member's level. This would be great for helping your buddies level up, and not miss any game story. The high level would gain experience at a somewhat adjusted rate. I completely agree with the need for this option. Option 3 - All members are raised or lowered to the mean average level of the group. (Level 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 would all become level 15). This would be the most logical in my opinion. But it would make mid-levels overplayed and very boring. Yes, overplayed and boring. In most games lower levsl are not well thought out as to the content. Most people don't saty at the lower levels for much time, and those that do generally spend alot of time RPing or creating their own content. Game content at this level is very dull in most cases. Nothing I really want to rehash, which I why I don't play alts. Not a bad idea. One way to do that with one of your first 2 examples is have the group leader be the one to set the mean group level. Meaning, if you are player A and are lvl 30, and you need to do a quest, but all your friends are spread out in lvls. Say, you have friends that are lvl 20, 35, 40 and 75. If you do the inviting to the group, or become designated group leader, you can then set all the group members level to yours. All members get exp out of the quest, and it's not a waste of time to higher lvl members, lower level members are not getting powerleveled (I could care less about this, but some people do) and it's a nice challenge for everyone. It would make playing together with friends of all levels possible, and not a have to worry about feeling like you are "inconviencing" you higher lvl buds.

Answers to the best of my ability:
A: Yes as I'm reading the current information this is how it works...subject to change of course
B: This is another example of why one of the biggest jobs for the GM's is going to be re-educating players. You're assuming that the level 75 content is "end game" content just like it would be in all of the current MMO's out there. What's different in HJ is that if that level 5 groups with the 75 and they go off to do some of the level 75's quests that doesn't mean that when that level 5 gets to 75 he's going to have the same quests. The level 75 could also help the level 5 complete some of his story quests, remember one of the nice things about instances for quests is that they can scale, and these quite possibly are stories that he didn't see when he was 5. Sure they could just go grind in a common area but is grinding for XP in a level 50 zone really that different from grinding for XP in a level 5 zone? Personally, I'd think that both players would be bored if that was their only choice.
As for the options presented, I kind of like the idea of allowing the players to choose so it's something to consider but once again you're forgetting that, unlike most MMO's out there, HJ isn't going to have one linear story that all characters grind through to get to some mythical "end game" content.
Well I've never been to "end game" in any game, even Gemstone which I played off and on for 12 years. I know that there aren't specific hurdles that you have to pass to get to the next part, but I do know about the laws of diminishing returns.
Since this is Simutronics, and I am a Gemstone Alumni, I'll give it to you in those terms. If you are running around killing manticores at level 10, you'll be getting maybe 200-2000 silver per treasure chest (depending on how many other people are hunting manticores). But if you can group up with your level 80 buddy and go to the rift and successfully hunt there, you'll be pulling down 2000-20000 per chest. Why would anybody at level 5 want to run around and kill things their own level if they can be getting powerful items, wyr, silver (gold plat whatever), and things.
Although, I have to say, the reverse is also true. I would help my buddies level up with no real question in doing it, I also was upset I couldn't be out there pulling down my 250k a hunt. So other than just to help a buddy, nobody would really be running around helping out level 5s if they only got level 5 loot. It just seems like it's a slippery slope you're on; opening doors that have been purposely shut in MMOs of the past.
Another for-instance. In FFXI there are level capped areas. Any level walks in they become the level of the area. So you can get a decent party, get level 30 gear, and go hunt in these areas. You don't have to worry about too many other people being there, or getting new gear, you just level grind in the purest form. You can get from 30 to 75 in a few weeks. The problem becomes that your skills were never given a chance to level up at all, so you're level 75, but your skills are all so gimped you'll be skilling up for weeks just to catch up. So it has built in ying and yang to it. With the system you're proposing, it seems like all ying and almost no yang.
Where are the negitives that would make it so massive hunting parties don't form of a single 75 advertising that he is taking out as many people as he can and go level grinding all the time, making everybody very rich (and therefor very poor)? I guess these are all things we're going to find out during Beta.

I'm guessing there will be hunting parties formed to go out and "grind" common areas. If that's what people want to do that's fine.
The difference between what HJ is hoping to do and every other MMO out there now, including both GS and DR from what I can tell since I've never really played either, is that we're hoping to change the focus. Sure you can farm the common areas for cash/loot and if you group with a level 50 you can hunt tougher areas...though to be honest probably not as efficently as if you were that level already but that's a different issue...but the best stuff, the most fun, will be had in completing the quests.
I haven't seen all of the details of how the loot system is going to work...and they haven't been discussed so I can't talk about them...but from the little I have seen I think that the whole farming common areas for "phat lewt" is going to be an excercise in frustration. It's not going to stop some people from trying though but more power to them, I'll be off with my friends enjoying an engaing story and saving the world .
Hopefully when a level 5 groups with a level 75, even through the level 5 is temporarily fighting as if they were 75, the xp gain and drops for the level 5 will be comparable to what they would get in a level 5 encounter. Otherwise, you are going to see constant requests by lower level players to be "PL'd".
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
The next question, then, would be what sorts of quests will provide the best loot? Will group/raid quests provide better loot than solo quests?
There's not going to really be loot. I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a very sexy looking weapon off the big bad boss, but it won't be much, if any, stronger than the weapon people have bought from a vendor.
And, to the earlier comment, I believe what I read in an earlier interview is that when you group with a higher level and pick up wyr, it'll scale back down to your level when you drop from the group. So even if you pick up a flame wyr meant for a level 50, even if you slot it, it'll scale back down to level 5 as soon as you're no longer grouped.

Correct and incorrect. There will be level, race, class, and gender restricted Wyr. Anything not level restricted will just be providing a low to ok % bonus to X thing. Anything level restricted will be useable by the low level as long as their grouped up and made to be a level that could use the Wyr, but once ungrouped they can no longer use it. So you can in theory collect Wyr just for hunting with your friends who are higher then you.
As to the sword. The big boss weapon will not be any more powerful then the old one, but it may be different in other ways besides looks. The new one might have more "natural" slots in it. However you may have bought, with hero points, more slots for you old sword equal to how many the new one has.

The next question, then, would be what sorts of quests will provide the best loot? Will group/raid quests provide better loot than solo quests?
And, to the earlier comment, I believe what I read in an earlier interview is that when you group with a higher level and pick up wyr, it'll scale back down to your level when you drop from the group. So even if you pick up a flame wyr meant for a level 50, even if you slot it, it'll scale back down to level 5 as soon as you're no longer grouped.
There's not going to really be loot. I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a very sexy looking weapon off the big bad boss, but it won't be much, if any, stronger than the weapon people have bought from a vendor.
