My first one was The Fourth Coming... wasn't much of a great RPG. Quit the genre for a few years then got hooked on RO for years and now I'm looking for something new. Still haven't found it yet.

Well i started out with Diablo II then went on to playing The Myth Of Soma, that was the first real MMORPG i ever played and i will never forget it, it will always be my favorite out of any mmorpg that i ever play.

Although my first experience was with Asheron's Call (technically it was actually EverQuest, but I only played it through the tutorial and a few short levels before switching to AC), I left AC after a year and a half (returned to play AC for another year later) to join Anarchy Online.

Even though that game was terribly bugged in the first half year of its release, it was one of the most well thought out gameworlds I had ever seen.  Had wonderful atmosphere, large common areas, big cities with stores and clubs, dangerous wild lands, a complex and interesting implant (buffs) system that people loved to tinker with, and innovative ideas like "The Grid" and "instances" including even instancing shops when they got too crowded which, in those early days, led to:

"Hey, come on in, I'm in the shop."

"No you're not, I'm in the shop and you're aren't here."

"Yes I am! Blah, blah, etc.," and so on until we got it through our heads what an "instance" was (Funcom pioneered the use of instances).

Then of course the incredible, MUST-HAVE Yalmaha flying car!  (Only something like a personal flying dragon -- for a fantasy MMORPG -- could be as cool as this flying car was.)  This was and is the most fantastic mount any game has ever created because it was sleek and stylish, very fast and indispensible to get around the large world of Rubi-ka and to your missions areas safely.

And it had the backdrop of the Omni-Tek vs. Clan PvP wars, arenas for dueling in towns, and even guards and merchants who could be attacked (for better or for worse).

If Funcom is able to recreated some of the MMORPG-magic with the release of Age of Conan -- I'll be there!

So, even though AC was my first longterm game, AO was my second (DAoC was my third, also a good game) and fondly remembered.

I think it was Ultima Online, which I still to this day play at some times. The magic isn't there anymore and I'm struggling to find that "one" mmorpg that completes me...

Ultima Online, still remember some dude at walmart saying "this game aint half bad man" so I walked over and picked up the box...one hour later I get pk'd for asking some guy how he kept killing people and dissapearing lol. Talk about a shocker, I'd been gaming for years before that and to this day I still remember my first death online.

That was the only game I ever played where you could get robbed, killed and LOL'd before you ever knew what happened, noone was safe.

It really depends on whether you consider the eary MUDs as MMOs as well. If so then it was DragonRealms for me.  But if you're only talking graphical games, the first one I actually played (as opposed to just beta testing) was EQ(1).  I was in the beta for it as well, but it was the first I actually continued to play upon release (the others that I'd tested but not played after release being UO and M59).

    Me too!

My first ever online game was War of Conquest, back in its prime before you realise it's boring. RTS with squares. I owe my mother for telling me about this in 2003; I never would have known otherwise! And thus probably would never have played MMO's,except maybe when WOW came out.

At that time I wanted to play Runescape, but my computer sucked. When I upgraded later on to broadband and a better PC,Runescape took me away for about 6-7 months. But then I got fed up and looked for something else.

Long story short, I tried MU Online (hit head!) then Maple Story then FlyFF then Gunbound then finally ended up on WOW. WOW helped a lot. From WOW I tried GW (sigh, don't think Ill be playing that again) then EVE, L2 (urgh,L2!), DAOC.

Now I'm MMO-addicted,thanks to my mother saying 3 years ago.....Look,there's this new game they talked about on GMTV,sounds good!

Mothers; cause of all MMO addiction!!

It was Runescape - if that qualifies for a game.

It felt more like a long stretch of skull-topped heads and yellow-text beggars with an external supply of goblins for those who need something to hack on.

After that I went back to Tetris & Falling Sands for a while. (System shock)

    The future: Adellion
Common flaw in MMORPGs: The ability to die casually
Advantages of Adellion: Dynamic world (affected by its inhabitants)
Player-driven world (beasts won't be an endless supply of mighty swords, gold will come from mines, not dragonly dens)
Player-driven world (Leadership is the privilege of a player, not an npc)
