It'll get cancelled again and years later when Amazon needs attention; they'll start it back up again.

Btw, this is the 4th time this project has been in production; i don't think any game project in the history of games have gone through the hell the Middle-Earth project has gone through, unless someone knows of one thats been through one longer then this.

Edit:  Also, something i found really funny, is that Amazon is using the Embracer Group, which is where all of Square|Enix's western studios were offloaded into- AND now according to a Yahoo article: 'Square Enix Plans To Create and Acquire New Studios' - so like... again?

    https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/square-enix-plans-create-acquire-134339188.html

The haphazard nature of the game industry can be dizzying to watch.

Just read the game will have the same Engine as New World =-\
I don’t really consider that a bad thing to be honest, for how good it looks New World runs extremely well. All the other stuff though? There is almost no way they can’t royally screw this one up.

I have read (not played) that New World has had many problems with their Engine. Guess people blew that out of proportion then?

Eh... don't have much faith in this project since it reads the same team responsible for New World will be developing this.

I was excited beyond my wildest dreams until I read that one sentence.

They dropped the ball so hard with New World it's hard to have any faith in them and that just being honest.

The engine has limitations and that's why New World is riddled with bugs and exploits...

I can't believe someone suggested that the engine runs well. I actually lol'd when I read that. Clearly, you didn't participate in lots of Wars or even high pop World tours.  And that's not even getting into the other issues the engine causes.

I'm calling it now - it's going to have female black elves with beards and dreadlocks, men with pink female hairstyles and no genders - just body type 1 and body type 2 and lots and lots of woke propaganda.

I hope that's the case just to annoy the shit out of the crowd triggered by that.

    Y'all need a life.

It should be. I can't imagine a LOTR game where you could play as a an orc or some other Sauron Minion.

Wow got away with giving Orcs a plausible not-totally-evil backstory but that would be impossible to pull off with LOTR.

LoTRO ahd to think long and hard before they came up with "monster play" as this other thing you could do for funsies if you really, really, wanted to PvP. But it was totally ignorable by the core game.

If it's anything like the RANGS OF POWA they might as well burn the money.

Their game will be set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, featuring the stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy.

They were also very clear to add:

Separately, Amazon Studios produces the hit series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for
Prime Video, which takes place during Tolkien’s Second Age of
Middle-earth and is unrelated to this upcoming MMO game in development
    with Amazon Games.

They're experts in "adapting" original works, tho. Some stuff about "Western" sometimes, and "modern" other times, sensibilities. AGS in particular also has a track record of saying that something wouldn't be changed from the original, for players to later find out that it was a lie. It's not unreasonable for some people to expect them to do the same thing this time, especially in regards of making not-so-smart changes to the story/setting/characters.

In other words, people would do well in being cautious about this one and taking anything that Amazon says with a grain of salt. Unless they somehow (and miraculously) see the light and change their ways in the years left for this game to get done and released (if it's not cancelled).

Hmmm, are you really saying that "a Lord of the Rings MMORPG" has been tried 4 times or that Amazon has started one four times?

Was interested in this before the company that was making it got sold to the embracer group or w/e awhile ago however now that amazon seems to be n charge of this my expectations are going to be toned, way, way, way down low.

I really liked New World, it had lots of potential, but AGS has shown me it cant run a game properly, makes truly stupid decisions and lets real life "politics" color their choices but not in a good and inclusive way but rather a close minded exclusive way that takes choices away from people rather than embracing and giving more people more choices.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Lol there's already a Lords of the Rings Online MMO out. This is total monopolizing by Amazon who already have an MMO, New World, and now they want Standing Stone Games out of business, a typical example of Amazon Sauron trying to snuff out the SSG Shire. How is Amazon not being investigated for antitrust? Trolled by the big corporations again.
LOL.  So no one can make a new LOTR MMO as it may put SSG out of business?

SSG is a pretty crappy developer with the worst Customer Service in the business.

What do you mean by "use the Embracer Group". They have no choice because Embracer is now the rights holder to basically everything the Tolkein Estate doesn't manage. They bought MEE from Saul Zants.

Embracer has bought up a ton of companies and IPs. I posted the link in some other comment, but when you look at all they own, it is staggering.

All I ask is that AGS fixes their engine before they work on it. Whether they want to admit it or not, 90% of New World's problems are because of the engine.

And New World can be rolled into maintenance mode until the new game launches, then dropped.

Also, the Shire will have 197 genders.
The obsessive predictions some of you guys have for New World's death is only matched by AGS' obstinate determination to prove you wrong lol.

So is AGS gonna go one direction with this MMO and stick with it and not shift around on a later date when majority of the game has already been finished? I believe this is what they did with New World.

I would love to see the Orcs and all the evil side of things be playable. I would love there to be a deep PvP side of the game so I could PvP player Orcs. But this is Amazon and if they do all the things I love, I will just get even more upset when they mess them up.
