Mythic is coming around the bend with Warhammer Online, which looks to be very promising, and it will include a system very much like the realm versus realm system they already have in place for Dark Age of Camelot.  While I got tired of DAoC, and left for greener pastures, I must say that I really did enjoy the Realm vs. Realm system for PvP much better than most other MMORPGs.

Also in the works is a very hush hush MMO being made by BioWare, I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeve.

I'm impressed by Blizzard's constant effort to add new content, but truthfully, I feel a lot of that content is just stuff they didn't have time to implement before release because Vivendi Universal was breathing down their necks, since V/U was in the red.  Other issues, such as population imbalance between factions, shoddy hardware that can't support the increasing number of users, and constant class tweaks that render some player's builds useless are among some of the things that have really begun to annoy me, and a large number of other players as well.

After this year's E3, I am even less impressed with Blizzard.  The employees at Blizzard's booth were a prime living example of the crappy attitudes, snobbish elitism and contempt they hold for their fan base.  They were probably some of the most unfriendly people working a booth in the entire event, with the exception of maybe one or two people.

I was actually interrupted in the middle of a session on one of their stations, while some wretched troll of a woman with large hips and stringy grey hair shooed me away to make room for some press cronie.  While I found it humorous that she could be so blatently rude, it reminded me of the dozens of bad encounters I've had while dealing with GMs in-game, and their sloppy canned responses and lack of concern over the issues I had presented.

They have our dollars, and there are THOUSANDS of players willing to shrug it off and pay more of their parents hard earned dollars, so my opinion isn't going to count for much.  When a better MMO comes out and their customer base shrinks, I'll find time to sit back and smile, knowing that they will have to scramble to regain their subscribers like every other passe MMO out there.  Then they might be humble enough to kiss some customer hind quarters and learn to be a bit more friendly.

go to mmogchart.com and all will make sence...what are u babling about.?

this post obviously by some WoW -hater...WoW has more subscribers then all mmogrpg's together...just look at the  chart...

WoW hits 6 500 000 players while the closest thing to it is Lineage and its in constant fall while WoW attracts players all the time..and when Burning crusade will come out.....i think we have not seen evertyhing from this game....eventualy all games become old...WoW will too....everythnig beautifull dont lasts forever...

and WAR ...wont take 1/222 WoW players cause who didnt liked it quited it ...rest of us are addicted players who just cant stop..when WoW gets old Blizz will see that and will release WoW 2( not any time soon)..and then what...again new rekords,,subscribers fans and post like this how u hate WoW..but that wont change anything...WoW will stay the ruler of MMO scene for years to come ...

now u say what u want but those are the facts that u cant argue with

You have to take those numbers with a grain of salt, no MMO that I know of has released how they count subscribers.  Especially WoW which is played in internet cafe's in Asia.  Who knows how they count them.

I think BC could be their last chance to show that they want to be a game for everyone, or a game for hard core raiding. I don't think people will trust them if they blow it.

I'm a fan of AoC but I'm realistic about my expectations. I know that the community will be the worst of the worst, filled with teenagers who role-play sexist assholes. AoC is going to have a terrible community because of the players it will attract. (Teenagers)

You'd think that everyone would know by now. How many times has this been posted?

Customer base reaches 6 million players worldwide as Blizzard Entertainment® prepares its award-winning MMORPG for continued
    growth in Europe

PARIS, France - 28 February, 2006 - Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced plans to release a fully localised Spanish
version of World of Warcraft®, its popular subscription-based massively multiplayer
online role-playing game. The Spanish version will represent the fourth language available to players in Europe, making the
game accessible to an even wider audience here. World of Warcraft's European customer base is currently at more than 1 million
players, with the worldwide total now at more than 6 million players.

The Spanish version of the game will be released and hosted in Europe
and supported by a dedicated Spanish-speaking team based at the
Blizzard Europe offices. This will include 24/7 in-game support,
offline customer support, a dedicated community team and an official
World of Warcraft website in Spanish. As with the existing German and
French versions, the game will be localised by the Blizzard in-house
    localisation team.

"We look forward to offering Spanish-speaking players in Europe
a version of World of Warcraft tailored specifically for them," said
Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment®. "The
enthusiasm for the game here has been overwhelming, and we're pleased
that this new localised version will make World of Warcraft accessible
    to an even wider audience."

World of Warcraft has steadily grown in popularity around the world since its initial launch in North America, Australia and
New Zealand in November 2004. The game's content and player population continued to expand in 2005, with subsequent
launches in Korea, Europe, China, Singapore and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. In Europe, World of Warcraft
is operated by a dedicated local team of more than 450 Blizzard employees representing 22 different nationalities.

For more information on World of Warcraft, please visit the game's official website at
    www.wow-europe.com.

    World of Warcraft's Customer Definition
    World of
Warcraft customers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee
or purchased a prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those
who have purchased the installation box bundled with one free month
access. Internet Game Room players that have accessed the game over the
last thirty days are also counted as customers. The above definition
excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or
cancelled subscriptions, and expired pre-paid cards. Customers in
licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

And because of this my opinion is that no one game will kill it, it will crumble down by it's own weight, and I would even be so bold in saying that the biggest number of people playing it at the moment are those that are in the constant state of wait, and as soon as somehting new comes, bye bye wow. People will scatter from wow like rats from a sunking ship, but with that hapening it will still have the single bigest subscribtion number around.

Just look at howmany games (and howmany diverse games) was in development before WoW, and howmany games from which good number of them aren't even listed on MMORPG.COM are in development as we speak.

WoW won't die, unfortunately. With almost 7 million subscribers and other MMO's surviving with only a few thousand WoW's demise is an eon away.
New MMO's will just pinch a little at their subscriber base and hopefully will be able to seriously compete with Blizzard.
Warhammer Online will hopefully give the players that left WoW early on due to a bad PvP system, no stats caps and too much focus on PvE what they want and be successful in the areas that the mindnumbing and itemhorny game that is WoW failed.

how do they count ppl? well they just check what is their income on month...simply as that.....and i am a hardcore player but if the BC promises are empty i am going to quit. cause i am getting tired of lagging...LOVE the raiding and hanging out in instances but Blizz is a bunch of greedy f*cks who think only on money...if they could atleast read one forum they would fix the game dramatically and made the game even better,,,but they are just to lazy

Wow = Farming also in PVP
u must do PVP into BG...             and BG= farming

the equip let you do triple of based damage whit a single spell( i seen shadowbolt hit for 1500-1700 istead of 500-600 based damage) whitout crit

so u MUST farm equip into istance or be rank 14 whit battlegrounds (farm battleground)

THE Goal it's got the best equip and use it doing PVP whit a very destructive PG into battleground!

or in PVE server wait the patch for do more DPS then other PG of your calss into an istance that u Must Farm forever

cause u can do 1 istance 1 time in week and for get 1 item it can require some weeks also 11-12

i know people play a character in 2 for let the PG stay 16hour per day into a battleground for get rank

    LOL it's  FUN?????

There is no game that will match WoW as far as getting popularity as of yet. It will die out in time as people have already said.

The reason why  Wow became so big is because it already had a big fan base from Diablo and Warcraft series, those players were both adults and kids. Blizzard got RTS fans, just normal offline WC fans, Diablo fans, MMO fans, and younger kids that were drawn to it from word of mouth. Also Blizzard advertised their game for a very long time, I remember when I first bought WC3 they had a little flyer that showed STV with an orc walking across the bridge. That was like 4 years ago I think.

I see wow going up to 8ish million players after the expansion, then start falling slowly. But still, no game has even gotten close to WoW, meaning that even if it starts dying it sill might be the biggest MMO for the next few years.

The only way I can see a game surpassing it is if something like Halo or Counter Strike makes an mmo, then maybe the fan base will be drawn to that type of online play.

AOC's community will not be like or worse then WOW's... Unlike WOW  Anarchy Online (Funcoms other MMORPG) actually have employees that activly monitor chat channels and things of that nature...As has been said before if you act up in there games you will be reprimanded quickly by in game ARK or GM or both.. Unlike in WOW

I'm sure if AoC reaches anything like WoW's subscribers, they too will rely more on reporting than actively monitoring chat channels. Blizzard had similar goals shortly after release.

The larger response to this thread should be 'who cares'. Players should base their purchases on a bit more than what mmo has the most subscriptions.

Any mmo that doesnt suck as much as WoW...guildwars for example.  Also at fault are WoW players, who tend to have no life or social interaction outside of the game

    Hope is all that is.

To sell millions you got to have a brand name and the press behind you.

    WoW had that.

If say another popular brand name comes up and dumps loads of press on it then it will work.

G&H lacks even a brand name to be of any competition.

    Ok, look here folks.

I didn't mean that an mmo will literally "kill it."

I realise that WoW will be around for a very very long time.

Perhaps I should of said what will be the next big hit.

  • SonofSethSonofSeth Member UncommonPosts: 1,884
WAR because it's similar, and the only one with franchise to do it is STO.

I think STO  will kill WoW. But that is just my opinion.  STO is very anticipated, and there are a lot of Star Trek fans out there.  I know that WoW isn't going to die anytime soon, but it will by the STO comes out if a few years.

Me after this post and all you WoW fans get to me

To be honest I don't think one single game will 'Kill' WoW it will be the combination of several game releases.

Age of Conan, Spellborn. WAR , Vanguard etc. all will atract various elements of WoWs current subscriber base.

Each of these games will gradually reduce the in game populations. However i dion't think wow will ever be killed althiough populations will reduce significantly. But if you look at the numbers still playing starcraft/warcraft diablo it seems a good indication that even if numbers do reduce significantly WoW will still be viable for years to come. I just hope numbers drop enough for Blizzard to become innovative again because at this point in time it looks pretty much like all Blizzards eggs are in the WoW basket.

No game will kill WOW. If UO, AC, Horizons and the original EQ are all still alive, WoW will be around for a very long time. I don't play the game personally. But I think people try too hard to bash it because it is popular. It's kinda funny. "Man, WOW is the crapiest game ever!" Yet they have a few million subscribers. They have to be doing something right. You cannot argue that no matter how hard you are or how funny you try to be. Hell if people are still playing muds and Meridian, WOW will be around 10 years from now. I really don't see any of the upcoming games hurting WOW too badly either. Warhammer, Pirates, Conan, Vanguard, too many to list as every game developer wants in on it. None of them will touch WoW numbers..ever. Sure they may do good, I won't argue that.

I'd almost bet not a single one of the upcoming games breaks One million subscriptions. Even farther I'd bet most of them won't even touch half of that. I'd say Vanguard will do the best as my prediction. Massive advertising budget care of SOE will help that along. But it's only my prediction because that's the game I want to play. Where someone waiting for Conan is going to say Conan is the next big thing.

A few of those games look sweet to people like me, or anyone on here. But that is what we do, and that's why we post at MMORPG.com, because we all just play whatever MMO fits our needs. Instead of playing what is popular. The majority of the people playing WOW could probably give a crap about this site or most other games.

I'm not flaming any of the upcoming games. I'll personally try a few of them no doubt. But that's how I roll, I like to play games based more on what I like and not what has the most boxes at Wal-Mart.

  • SonofSethSonofSeth Member UncommonPosts: 1,884

What are the actual selling numbers of normal games, I know that 6.5 mil is much for a MMORPG, but is it that much compared with single-player games?
