This sounds like an intriguing system. Could you address the concern that there will be ways to "PL" a lower level character? By that I mean that:
1. Another player puts such high level buffs on an ungrouped lower level player that they are invincible or near to it, so they run around killing mobs solo with an extraordinary rapid xp gain;
2. Gets xp at the rate of higher level players when grouped with higher level players. In other words, instead of a level 5 who groups with a level 75 getting the same xp a level 5 would get, they get the amount a level 75 would get.
3. Gets the same drops when grouped with high characters as the high level characters, which means they can sell them for vastly more than the drops a normal level 5 gets, even if they can't equip them.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
2. This has been addressed. If someone at a low level groups with someone at a higher level, the exp gain is scaled down to their level. The higher level will get normal exp still.

1. I haven't seen any information on buffs, either single target or group based so I can't really answer this.
2. My understanding from reading what has been released is that they will get, on average, the same amount of experience they would get for hunting things at their level so in other words no real XP advantage. They might even get slightly less but you don't want to penalize people because they couldn't keep up with their friends any more than you want to give people that have high level friends an advantage.
3. At E3 I heard some information on how the loot system works that is very intriquging but, sadly, it's not complete yet and the onsites aren't talking about it so I can't give out any details. Suffice it to say that this is something they are well aware of and there are already systems in place to address these issues.
Ok, thank you! It sounds good. As long as these are issues you are sensitive to and are trying to avoid, I am confident you will find a good way.
CoH also has an awesome sidekicking/reverse sidekicking type system, etc, which is not exactly what you are doing but it's analogous. I LOVE that system, but it took them over a year after launch to work out most of the ways it could be exploited and for players to get free xp or absurdly rapid xp. And of course in any game, if players derive a substantial benefit from grouping with high level characters that they don't get from grouping with players their own level, they are going to pester the high levels for "PLs" and skip the lower level content whenever they can.
<- hopes there are some CoH/CoV players on the team.
Since I know you are working hard to avoid the "rush to end game mentality", I am glad to hear these are things being looked at.

Glad this thread is up, and now that I've finished reading it all, my eyes have fallen out.
Our clan has a ton of questions, which I'll try to keep lumped together in some sensicle order.
Lore and roleplay questions first, since they help us decide roleplay histories and possible futures for our characters and the clans/guilds:
1. How many years have passed from the point of the Sundering to present (game release)?
2. Interviews say that the Sundering ripped the world apart and it is held together (mentions different terms), divided by giant chasms. Will this create separate continents or large islands for players to explore? Can you give more discription, please.
3. Will we be given roleplay reasons for why some things are not in world any longer? Races that were in Gs are not in HJ, same for classes.
4. Can we get a full story now or soon on how gearsmiths came to exist?
5. Where do characters start? This is not so much a lore or rp question but it does effect starting stories of characters. Also, if they start in different areas, with no control over where, is there a way that players can move their lowbie chars to the same starting city?
6. Can characters learn other languages, and if so, which ones are planned to be in. Will these be computer generated types (like EQ has) or is there someone actually developing languages (don't tempt me!)?
7. What is the Kingmaker? Does it have a function in game or is it simply visible fluff?
8. Will there be commands like /anon and /roleplay ( hich in some games turn name tags a different color, showing what state the character is in)?
9. Can we get more lore on who the Wanderers are? Can you say if they are a NPC faction that has any influence in the world? Can characters work their faction enough to hang out in Wanderer encampments?
10. Factions.... We know of the three player factions of the Triumvirate. Are there any others that players can choose from, even if they're not official in the running for the Trium? Can we get a tentative list maybe?
11. (one of my special interest ones) Will the bestiary of game be hosted on HJ site like it is for GS?
12. okay I'll stop for now... have a fantastic day!!

Displaying the interface and it's large amount of data for a clan leader within 1.2 seconds (on my machine). The end number will be known at a later date. 6. Hmmm...haven't heard this mentioned at all so no info.
7. Kingmaker will play a role in the game. Details coming.
8. Not sure about this, most of the games that use these features are so you can hide your class/level/guild. If I'm understanding Royce's reply about the guild/clan stuff you'll be able to turn off what you want to display there. I can't see any reason why we wouldn't implement being able to turn off displaying class/level, as long as we're still able to provide people a "relative strength" indication for PvP purposes, but I don't know for sure.
9. I'm sure that's coming at some point as well.
10. If I'm remembering correctly they also mentioned the House of Rogues not sure if there are any others.
11. I don't know but I'll suggest it. Afterall, you know it's going to appear somewhere on the web.
I know Steph has an entire series of articles planned for the various websites as well as updates on the main HJ site so expect to see more lore related stuff over the next few months.
"I can't see any reason why we wouldn't implement being able to turn off displaying class/level, as long as we're still able to provide people a "relative strength" indication for PvP purposes, but I don't know for sure. ~HJ-Sisca"
Why? Why do you feel that PvPer need strength indicators. PvPers constantly call non PvPers Carebears in WoW, yet they insist on crap like this to let them see if they can win a fight before the fight even begins. Make it real PvP and let them learn through trial and error. There is no reason for another person to be able to click on or mouse over anther character and get "relative strenght" information on a PvP server. Let them use the environment to figure things out. Like area they are hunting or how fast they took down a critter.
As far as I know the only "factions" are those that make up the Triumvirate with a couple of other minor houses thrown in. None of them are religious based but then some of the religion stuff is just now being released...check the IGN stuff for more info...so I could be wrong.

It's not that I feel that PvPers need this information, it's that I always see them saying it's required. I'm not a fan of PvP myself but if it's going to be possible for me to roam into an area in my explorations and suddenly be subject to PvP I know I'm going to want those indicators so I can decide whether or not to run like the coward I am . If I get a warning about the area being PvP or if I have to explicitly do something to engage in PvP it becomes less of an issue for me.
While I tend to agree with you...if you're so gung-ho about PvP you should just deal with it...I can also see potential reasons why it will be neccessary. For example what if we were to implement a kind of Honor System where you get honor points for initiating someone say no more than 2 levels below you up to any level higher than you but you get dishonor for initiating combat with someone more than 2 levels below you? You'd need some sort of indicator so you didn't accidentaly gank some poor level 10 that, like me, likes to run around exploring higher level zones.
All that said it's kind of a moot point until more information comes out about how PvP will be implemented.

54 pages is a lot to read... ungh, just got done!
Nice to see GM's that are actually GM's for a change Been a long long time (since GEnie days) since I played a Simutronics game I've added HJ to my list of games to watch for (which is very very short) Thanks for the extremely informative (and frequent!!) replies.
I'd apply to be a GM but between my job (Network Engineer for a 500,000 user environment) and family I just don't have the time. Between getting called at all hours of the night to deal with whatever issue crops up and taking care of kids/wife at home I just wouldn't be able to do it justice. I will, however, hope to get into the Beta because I'm an above-average Beta tester.
Thanks for all the information folks! And keep up the great work.

I know Steph has an entire series of articles planned for the various
websites as well as updates on the main HJ site so expect to see more
lore related stuff over the next few months.

Can clans? Can guilds?
2. If so, can you give an example how that will effect the player/clan/guild?
Oooo, I get a chance to say it...

Gender restricted Wyr...! How daring. Just don't make 'em all "amazon's rage" and "siren's lure" and "Valkyries speed", or else I'll never heard the end of my husband complaining about favoritism towards women (he grumped up a storm when DaoC added female-only classes but never added any male-only classes).
As a fellow former DAOC player:
Tell him to come up with a profession from the arthurian, norse or celtic/irish mythos that was restricted to males only (There aren't any by the way) Closest you could get would be Valhalla which was primarily male warriors but they're just dead people. The Valkyries were female heroes.
