separate server due to chinese laws and such, won't effect the original server at all....except for maybe speeding up updates with additional revenue. Some people aren't going to like how well it is doing in China though as it ruins their arguments that Asians don't like sci-fi games.

oh wow, they made an open beta, so everybody can join for free and they bought one expensive server, if they really try hard, they might even impress me some day.

LOL there he is...was wondering how long it would take. So they get more players signing up for the EVE china beta in 1 day than the whole WoW beta had and you still brush it off? So when the game goes live and they break the 50,000 player concurrency record within weeks of launch how about then.
Just because you couldn't hack it in the game doesn't make it bad.
err the records they achieve only include Eve Online. I have seen some poorly managed games that let over 30k people on at the same time on the same server cluster during open beta's.
200k is pretty lousy for a game thats theme is like Eve's in China. A ship game in which you build and battle with your own ship should easily be in the millions. Also chinese gold farmers don't farm chinese servers for gold. They farm US, European, Korean, and Japanese servers for gold so they can take advantage of the currency exchange, like an 8 to 1 ratio. If the ratio wasn't so high you wouldn't see chinese gold farming companies being made because there isn't any profit in it.

"This past Monday we launched the World of Warcraft open beta test, and by the following day, we had already reached a total of more than 500,000 signups! To everyone who signed up, we'd like to say thanks again for helping us make this the most extensive beta test ever for a Blizzard game. We take this as a strong indication that the gaming community is as excited about World of Warcraft's upcoming release as we are.
As for the status of the open beta test, more than 40 servers are currently active, and testing is running smoothly, with additional players completing their client installation and joining by the hour. Each server hosts thousands of concurrent users, most of whom are seeing Azeroth through the eyes of the Horde or the Alliance for the first time. We continue to review every suggestion submitted, so please keep them coming in!"

Eve has broken a new record with their China server.

There's also the fact that CCP has been concentrating so much effort on opening the Chinese server that development on their existing server (you know, the one which everyone currently pays for) has all but stalled out.

Wow, that's a huge number. I wonder how much of it is the regular players messing around on the new boxes, but still impressive. If EVE actually opens in China with more players than in the whole-rest-of-the-world servers, I'd be really suprised because while China is big, I wouldn't expect its EVE market to be that big.
Now if they'd just set up a North American server so we don't have to hop the damn atlantic to play they might actually get more US and Canada players. I'm impressed that they hit 30k concurrent players. That's pretty impressive considering 1 year ago it was like 9k. Sounds like CCP may have popped the 200k subscriber mark.

Why wouldn't it be? Chinese people like sci fi just as much as the rest of the world LOL Star Wars was HUGE in Hong Kong after all. So was Star Trek actually. I wonder if they're allowed to let people from countries other than China onto the servers.... It'd be a shame if China is forcing them to restrict access to only chinese players....

The new servers are located physically in China, and will be restricted in access to only players from China. The existing server will remain as the only server for the rest of the world.

More like two and a half years ago it was 9k max concurrent. I remember EVE breaking 10k in early 2004 (and then nearly doubling that in a few months as Earth and Beyond was announced to be closing).

Its an open beta. the chinese players are not subscribers, just people who signed up for a trial thats called a beta. I doubt they had such an increase in subscribers since their last announcement

I doubt they had such an increase in subscribers since their last announcement This is true, the original server's subscriber number is around 121-125k with about 30k trial accounts, the active subs keep climbing steadily though, it could easily hit 200k subs by the end of the year, the China server will likely start with more than this and increase over time.
Apparently they have already run a tv ad there for EVE.
FYI they are up to 360,000 registered for the beta test now, methinks they will get 500,000 registered and once they get the kinks worked out will hit 50,000 concurrency in a stresstest. If shanghai turns into a crater we'll know what happened.

If a farmer yells "Wanna bai gold?" on the China server ...
How many farmers does it take on the China server to ruin the economy?
2 farmers walk into a bar on the CHina server with two bags of gold each...
Ok fill in the punchlines fellas. LoL

Good on CCP! I enjoyed Eve while I had time to play.

Jokes aside, hopefully this will encourage Asian devs to make a decent sci-fi gamew and put aside the FF-looking fantasy treadmills they churn out.
