ooooooooooo
Good Question......and hard one
DaoC is fun but I've played it for soo long that it's a little tiresome and boring now (but still ok).
Horizons....never played it so I can't give a fair opinion; but I've heard enough bad reviews to not buy it (its not nowhere as bad as Shadowbane though)
Hope that didnt confuse you even more lol
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
Horizons is not utter trash, far from it. It's also not a game that will appeal to everyone.
If the primary reason you play MMOGs is to adventure and kill things, Horizons definitely doesn't have a great deal of depth in that department yet. It might, but until it does I recommend waiting if that's what you're looking for. If you like to craft, Horizons is the best MMOG for crafters on the market (barring only A Tale in the Desert...but that's almost a different kind of game). If you like a little of both then Horizons is worth trying now.
I can't comment on DAoC...I haven't played it.
okay, this is it, if yu want to play a crappy game, aka horizons go ahead and waste your time, 3 reasons why you shouldn'y play...
1) there is a huge signs that says monters this way ----> ( im sorry but i think that is just plain rediculus to have a sign pointing where to hunt the monsters
2) if you want to play with bad character models go on ahead, check out horizons screenshots of there character model and devide that by 2, cause im sure those s/s are docotred
3) and when u want to log on do you really want to sign on the web page and have the web page launch the game? or do u want to have it on the desktop for easy access? wel this game is on the web belive it or not, and i played for 4 weeks, the whole time i couldnt even figure out how to change my resolution, so i played at 800 x 600, good luck finding the link on the site to change it
OR!
Do you want to play a game with PvP ( brings up something else, horizons does not.....does NOT...have any type of player vese player conflict, if u want to just PvE just play EQ.
daoc provdes everyhting u need, great great grapics engine ( www.darkageofcamelot.com (and pull up the trials of atlantis link)) COmmunit is great, and i dont understand where people are comming from when they say that the community service suck, i had a bug that i got myself into and i just type /appeal and BAM! he was there in a matter of seconds and was able to assist me with a great attitude and manner!
So for the love of god, go with dark age of camelot, not gay-fest 2004 Horizons
dark age of camelot
Yes, because it's a newbie island and newbies often need help. Leave the newbie islands...not many signs and it's very easy to get lost.
You're entitled to your opinion, but I honestly don't see what's wrong with the models.
The game is not on the web. It simply uses a web-based login sequence which launches a normal client that can be played fullscreen or windowed. Um...change resolution in the video options, like every other game on the market...this isnt rocket science.
If you didn't know about the newbie signs I seriously doubt you played this game for 4 weeks.
It's also a really dumb thing to complain about.

I thought in my oppinion that the graphics weren't the greatest. Battlegrounds is just silly. The only transportation in the game is some horse that runs funny. The only decent the to do in the game is to level over and over. The quests are horrid, the world isn't good or interesting at all. Lots of the monsters are stupid (wow, i'm fighting a bubble! and look, Marsh crud! Thats a polite way to say a liquidy piece of shit.) The money in the game is dumb, i could walk around for half an hour asking people for money and have enough to buy a house(don't tell me i'm wrong because i did it in a little over 30 minutes). The tradeskills are horrible.
I'm sorry but the only good thing i can say about dark age of camelot is RvR is cool.
If you don't mind forced grouping i would say FFXI, i love it.
Thats really mature of you. I think that comment alone should declare your opinions invalid from here on out.
DaoC is neither dark nor much to do with Camelot.
The riduculous Fenian, Brit, Norse thing really gets up my nose. There was enough conflict in 12th century Britain to centre the game around the real Arthurian legends without resorting to the stupid "Hollywood History" style they've used.
I've been playing Horizons since UK retail release and I love it but I can't put my finger on why. I was very jaded before I bought Horizons and, although it doesn't break new ground, it seems like a breath of fresh air.
I'de recommend Horizons, the comments about "Monsters This Way" signs are a bit misleading. The ARE only on the noob islands. Why wouldn't there be signs anyway?
Do you want to listen to the advice of somebody who can't find "resolution" under "video options"?
It's not all roses though. If you play with a modem (like me) there's gonna be times when you'll be frustrated.

Mythic has heard your cry: (patch notes on test)
"Players will now be able to earn experience from RvR for every artifact. The PvE requirements will still work, allowing players to choose whether to continue following the PvE requirement or to engage in RvR"
You will have to farm a little to get the artifacts, but at least you don't have level them over a week of camping the same spawn type. This is a good thing, for DAoC.

"Its a massive leveling trreadmill"
Most mmorpg's have a leveling tredmill. Some more than others.
"with little to no special items"
There has always been plenty for each class at specific Levels. Even more Unique Items were introduced with the Trials of Atlantis Expansion. Including "God like" items called "Artifacts".
"the dunegons are plain boring"
Did you restrict yourself to the starter dungeons, or did you venture forth to dungeons for levels 40+ and 50+? And if you purchased the TOA Expansion, then you would also have had the oppertunity to experience the new ones which can hardly be called "plain boring".
"there is virtually no commuinity aside from being ina guild"
It takes many to make a community. It takes one to be part of that community.
"the graphics are mediocre at best, even with the new exapnsion"
A review from PC Magazine states the following:
"One thing most players seem to agree on is that Trials of Atlantis has brought a substantial graphical improvement to the game. Trees finally look more realistic and hills have had protruding rocks added to give a more realistic view of the entire Camelot world. The biggest change to the game has to do with Camelot's lakes, rivers and bodies of water. Not only does water now look better in Trials of Atlantis, but players now have the ability to go underwater and play. "
Giving Graphics an 8/10 Vote with the Expansion TOA.
"the land size is miniscule"
Not sure what gave you thaty idea. I was going to count each "zone" just to give you a number but I don't have time.
Go visit Daoc's Official "Map-A-Lot" at Camelot Herald and see for yourself how large the playing areas are and how many this game offers if you don't know or are not sure.

"RvR is utterly pointless, and the rewards are insignificant."
Unless your character is lvl 45+, there is no point in you even attepting to experience Frontier RvR. Which is my only conclusion to your statement. Mythic has been focusing on the RvR aspect of their game for months now with their recent TOA Release. They are even "re-vamping" the entire RvR system in the coming months with their new FREE expansion "New Frontiers". If your not enjoying RvR as it is now, then i suggest you wait till the expansion.
"Forced grouping is tiresome and unecessary, and irritating when you need to find a group"
If your not a team player then solo. There are plenty of ways and means to do so with every offered class. Some are easier than others. DAOC also has a built in "find a group" feature to help locate a group that needs someone with the likes of your character and vice versa.
"and the quests are vague, and uniteresting"
The quests are not designed to hand you a reward on a silver plater. They are not given in cryptic clues nor are they given in "walkthrough" style. The are specific to what you need to do, who to talk to and where to go. If it were more simple than that, it would be uninteresting. However the diversity of the quests available to each specific class and the ones designed for every class, allow you character to better understand the lore behind DAOC, the different environments you travel through and the enemies you are liekly to face in the future.
"There is little to no NPC interaction"
Who do you talk to when you initiate or continue on with a quest? Who do you talk to when you wish to travel from one settlement to the next? Who do you talk to when you wish to purchase something? Who do you talk to when you wish to train a skill?
Anyone that has played DAOC, would have to agree that the above statement is false.
"the cities/villages are mundane"
DAOC does not revolve around cities or towns. What exactly are you wanting from a city/town that isnt already provided in this game? There are plenty available in each realm spread out rather accordingly in each "zone" offering reliable, usefule services for every character's needs. The Design of each settlement is also unique according to the surrounding environment. You never visit a settlement that looks the same as another. Nor do they offer the exact same services.
Again, anyone that has played DAOC, would have to agree that the above statement is false.
For those still thinking about playing DAOC here's a quote from Jeremy Conrad of PC Games
"The question remains, should you play Dark Age of Camelot if you're already into EQ or AO? Well, if you want a game that is familiar enough to get you into it, yet different enough to keep you hooked, the answer is a definite yes. DAoC takes some "standards" that MMORPG fans expect to see, expands on them with some great new gameplay and interface elements, and wraps it all up in an interesting story and world.
This game is something that the MMORPG market needed, and it is also one that I will be playing for a long, long time to come."

"When you find yourself sinking into Madness, dive"
First off every single MMO out on the market in the last 8 years has been repitivley speaking the same. There all treadmills wether it be adventuring or crafting. Nothing has been so overly dynamic to stand out and really grab the gaming world by its britches. They can only do so much and cater to so many types of players so with that said...
I was a tester on DAOC for 2 years and next to EQ it was one of the best games out and I am sure it still is although I do not play or test it anymore. I am quite burned out on it but I lasted longer there than any other game including EQ ( 9 months after beta). DAOC had one of the better releases as well and the questing system is rather decent. Yes there are class's screwed up like every other game but what is new honestly. Mythic has never been able to get the balancing act down properly I am afraid and that is something that plagues nearly every MMO out there.
I beta'd Horizons as well and lasted 7 weeks after release not too long ago actually. Yes Horizons is one of the best crafting systems to date and that's it. Many forum posts from ex beta testers like myself who were promised a whole new game upon release day and never saw it. If you like to adventure forget about it because the spawn rates, type of mobs and way too much open space will drive you mad. You can only kill so many damn golems from lvl 25-55 for resources before you finally have had enough. Kill named mobs repeatedley and enjoy drops of 6 copper and some blighted material. Speaking for myself only I am done with player run economies and no loot drops. I have done my share of crafting as well and I hate it, not fun for me personally and crafters can't sell their wares if there are no adventurers to buy them and look at all the player run economies to date like AC2 and SWG who lost so many accounts they are introducing drops into the game now. Does Horizons have potential? Yes plenty of it but it is way to late in my opinion they have lost a huge following due to their poor customer service, way too early release of a beta that needed another 6 months of work and so on. There are quests broken from beta stil not fixed like the Warrior class who cannot quest with their trainer beyond lvl 20 and the last patch still didn't fix it. It was extremely frustrating as a beta tester and even worse after launch many many things broken. These game designers need to understand that pretty gaming isn't all about pretty grahics, sure there nice but depth and dynamics will win most seasoned gamers over all the time.
If I were you I would be patient and sit back and wait for WOW, LIneage2 or if you like player disaster economies Dragon Empires, Dark N Light and there is also Realms Of Torment and EQ2 as well as UXO all due out within the next 6 months give or take a few. The market has alot of new competition coming out of the gates and I am personally one long time gamer who is fed up with the garbage we have been fed for way too long. I am hoping that someone gets it right finally and avoids all the other MMO's pitfalls. One man's opinion.
Peace

DAOC was an excellent game and really forced EQ to improve...
However -- I would wait for World of Warcraft. (I am waiting for WoW) I might also try a few of the other new games if they pan out....
Really a tough question to answer objectively, a game thats been out almost 3 years or so and has an established playerbase and 2 expansions worth of extra content... versus a game not even out 2 months yet...
All depends on if you want the established content or the "new world, which is still largely unexplored"...
DAoC Pros:
1. Well established game, have had 3 years to work out bugs and such.
2. 2 expansions worth of extra content.
3. RvR system is nice, and will be even nicer after the free Frontiers expansion.
DAoC Cons:
1. Not many newbies left in the game due to the /level system they implemented.
2. Picking the wrong server/realm will result in not having a chance in the world in RvR, some servers have SEVERE population inbalances between the realms.
Horizons Pros:
1. Outstanding crafting system, probably the best on the market.
2. Great storyline, not even 2 months into release and there are already really interesting server-wide events concerning unlocking a new playable race.
3. Newly released game, so still plenty of other new players to hook up with and group or form a guild or whatever you want.
Horizons Cons:
1. No PvP/RvR system, which this is only a con if you are looking for such.
2. Still a newly released game so some bugs and such are bound to be found.
3. Not as much content as DAoC, but it also doesn't have 3 years and 2 expansions.
