So what's the catch?
Gamesandbox says that SOE is not affiliated with this test so what do they seek to gain from it? Their site lacks information about who they are or how they will profit from this venture. They are obviously working some kind of angle to make a buck.
I would be leery about allowing them to load a program onto my system that tracks what I am doing.

There's a faq right there on their page.
How does Xclient work?
Xclient is our unique, feedback gathering application that allows you to communicate with us. This small, lightweight app will be used for every trial/contest you participate in. Xclient will run in the background (similar to Xfire, Yahoo Messenger, or AIM) while you play your game and will only be used when you call upon it!
How do I install it?
The Xclient can be downloaded as a self-extracting package from the GSB website. Once downloaded, we recommend that you place the downloaded file in a temporary folder (for example C: emp). Click on the executable file to extract the information into the folder and then click on the setup.exe file.
How do I perform a "Test communication"?
TBD
How do I enter feedback?
Is Xclient capturing any additional information on my machine?
Only information entered into the Xclient will be captured and sent to GSB. We will aggregate the information in order to determine playing patterns, preferences, likes and dislikes about the EverQuest® II game.
I’m getting errors while communicating with the GSB website, what do I do?
The Xclient includes a small test application, Pong – please follow the on screen instructions to test out your communication between the Xclient and GSB.
Who will see the feedback I submit?
Again, the information will not be looked at individually; we will always aggregate the information before using or sharing it with our partners.
I read all that, but I certainly want to know who these people are and how they benefit from sponsering this before I trust what they say.
It's the internet after all.

All the forums for mmorpgs, with all the threads, and all the posts from all the players . . . it can get pretty confusing and difficult for a developer to get an idea about what we want.
I think that Game Sandbox is a way to better coordinate feedback from players. It emphasizes sending your overall gameplay experiences, not just submitting bugs and "testing". In fact, it is not really testing in the way we think of a beta test, it's playing the game and sending feedback that may be consolidated and better organized. Then maybe this will be sent to SOE and they can do with it what they will.
I'm going to give it a shot because I enjoy EQ2 for one, and I really would like to see this work out and maybe in the future, games will be better because of it.
If they want to track me somehow, let 'em. All I do on this PC is play mmos and post here. I am not at all worried about foul play in this case.
(and just to correct the title of this post . . . it is not a full trial version that we will get, but an actual copy of Kingdom of Sky, which we get to keep. So basically, Game Sandbox is giving away 200 copies of EQ2 and we are getting the 30 free days that come with it.)
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
ya i played the trial of EQ2 but only for a week but form what i got of it is that its alot like FFXI in some ways.
it was gunna be the 1st MMO i would get asubscription to but then i came across FFXI and that sort of vanised
but since i get this chance im gunna do my best Beleave It
What Ever You Do
The catch is that what they're doing is setting themselves up as a testing service.
Their hope is that companies will pay them for access to their pool of testers and testing services, and we'll do the testing and all that stuff for free. It's basically a cash cow for them, for the most part.

ya i hear that but i think that who ever started this thing has already figered it out and if they haven't well there just a bunch of dreamers or morons

It's good information, please leave it up.
I am tempted to call them and ask them for more specifics about their company and angle. How open they are about themselves will go a long way in crediting or discrediting their operation. They really should be more forthright about who they are and what their goals are on their website though.
The fact that MMORPG.com made a sticky about it suggests a personal interest on their part. Strange no one from the staff has responded to this thread nor did they give the opportunity to do so on the sticky.
In any case someone else may need that information in the future if anything strange develops.

I'll help you out in EQ2, Necromage. I've played Everquest 2 since the day it came out, and have a mid/high level Ranger on the Antonia Bayle server.
I am a member of a well known roleplaying guild, but I will not be joining them with this new character I will be playing with for the Game Sandbox test. I figure I am going to have to create a whole new Station Account for the game to use the 30 free days that come with the game they're sending us, and so I will be starting over with a new character. This time I am leaning towards playing on a RP-PvP server (Venekor).
My playstyle this time around will still be roleplaying, but maybe with a little more emphasis on gaining levels than before, since I'd like to get as far as I can to give feedback on the high-level parts of the game. So if you are OK with that, I am willing to team up with you and get you familiar with things.
There will be some new things for me as well, since I haven't tried the PvP in EQ2 at all, and I haven't started a new character since the class overhaul of the first 20 levels.
I got mine today. I was surprised to see the 30 day gamecard included! According to the instructions, we are supposed to enter the Key on the gamecard, but what about the initial 30 days free after creating a new account? I hope it stacks, so we get a bonus of 60 days instead of just 30.
PS: The collectors coin is a nice touch I must admit.
PSS: Damn 9 disc? I haven't had an install this big since back in the days of Baulders Gate.
