Okay, let me play Devil's Advocate for a moment here. First, let me say that I am happily a meat-eater. That said the problem isn't that meat isn't unhealthy, it's that the current STANDARDS of meat is unhealthy. They are crammed full of steriods, chemicals, and crap we really don't need to eat.

It's generally easier right now to get truly organic fruits and vegetables (if you're bored enough go out in your backyard and grow some. You can make a nice controlled environment there.) Getting truly organic and unaltered meat products is a bit harder though. Unless you want to try to raise a cow in your backyard then do "the duty" when the time comes up :P

I believe we are omnivores. I've read article after article arguing this from prominent scientists on both sides of the debate so that goes round and round even to this day. Of course, vegetarians are going to believe THEIR sources are more reliable than the omni's and vice versa, but that's really just a biased perspective.

The problem is that a lot of the arguements on either side of the debate are really...crap for the lack of a better word. I've heard people argue (even in this thread) that meat-eaters tend to be more overweight than vegetarians but that's really a bad arguement and it's not generally using similar people in the study. Vegetarians are generally more concerned about their health to begin with. It would be more fair to compare a vegetarian and omnivore that are BOTH fitness nuts. That would give better results. But polling off the streets are rediculous. Personally, any extra weight I may have doesn't come AT ALL from the meat I eat. My vice and downfall is pasta, which will kill your weight faster than any meat out there

Then I hear arguements that vegetarians are "missing" essential nutrients in their diet. Okay, well maybe there would be a distinct difference between a vegan and a vegetarian here. But with a truly vegetarian diet they're not missing a single thing. I've heard protein argued time and again. There are beans that carry more protein pound for pound than meats. Iron? Try your dark greens. Calcium? Lots of places to get this.

Truthfully, I don't think vegetarianism is any more healthy than omnivorism if both are done with proper balance and moderation along with excerise. The keys are balance and moderation. Junk foods make you fat, not meat. You can be a vegetarian or an omnivore and eat too many bags of chips and still be overweight and out of shape. I just think most people who choose to be a vegetarian are already paying more detailed attention to their diet thus making them more healthy to begin with. If an omnivore paid the same attention to their health they'd probably be pretty similiar (I say pretty similar because genetics and metabolism are still pretty uncontrolled to make for a clean slate to judge from).

Good post! Eat what you want. If you live longer than a vegan or vegitarian good on ya. If you die first oh well.

I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.

That statement is really ironic. Btw you're the one who keeps bringing up PETA, not me. I'm not even a PETA member.

The problem is that by eating meat you're destroying the environment. Sadly I live in the same world and I have to deal with the consequences.

For all the thousands of years humans have eaten meat, there doesn't seem to be too much environmental damage...

    Ok,

if you notice, your front teeth are sharp, for cutting or tearing( i.e. eating meat), and your back teeth are rounded and flat for crushin or grinding,(i.e. eating fibrous vegetebles). put 2 and 2 together,(meat and vegetebles) and you see we evolved or were desinged by a god or aliens or watever, to eat both. sooooo..... eat meat and vegetables and shut up!

    P.S.
Animals, such as beef, chickens, and pigs do not feel pain,(I have seen it i know)

I'm talking about factory farms that produce the meat and you support them by buying it. Those factory farms create a ton of pollution. Also the massive deforestation.

I dunno if they are that sharp. I wouldn't dare trying to eat a steak with my front teeth as knives. I have a hard enough time eating steak with a regular knife. Nevermind trying to use your front teeth to bite through outside skin which is even more harder.

We have flat teeth and that lion has teeth that is more like a sword so they can stab the flesh in deep and tear it from inside out. We have even less jaw power, we have a inward jaw, unlike a lion or dog which protrudes outward which can "cup" around prey.

Bullshit. They need to feel pain because they are animals that if were out in nature would need to feel pain in order to survive.

Why do people waste their time and money protesting meat, when you know darn well it will never be banned or canned?

Well, I just hope that when that happens, people won't just be like "Animals don't matter, because we don't depend on them anymore." and kill them all off. That would suck.

Oh, and the person who said that "beef can't feel pain", or whatever... Well, I could easily take a bite out of your arm. That would make you food, and I'm willing to bet you'd feel it. Animals are no different than humans, they just evolved differently. People who think otherwise piss me off...

Alex when animals eat vegitation it goes through there system changing into differant nutrients we cant get from just veggies. thats a fact. now in the synthetic world they can extract those nutrients and put them in pill form but they dont go through the same process as meat there for distributing through out the body differantly.

thats what is missing in this disscussion the way the nutrients are processed through the body is the biggest factor. i dont have time to link all this info but it is out there (im at work).

so yes you can be a vegan and not eat any meat but its not as good for your system. a piece of meat any kind once a week is good for your system as opossed to pills.

as for the polution and eveything its been here for hundreds of years it will always be here human polute the world clenses its self from time to time and the earth keeps on spinning. unless the whole world at one time started gardening and eating nothing but veggies then it would make a differance. but unfortunatly that would never happen. so live how you want to live vegan or omnivore and be happy. disscussions are nice but lifesysles are one thing not everyone will ever agree on.::::20::::::28::

Ok my mistake, animals do feel pain but not when they are slaughtered... Ive seen many different forms of butchering, most of the time it seems that the animal hits the ground before you even hear the gunshot.
i have also participated personally in the butchering of chickens.... we cut their throats and the fall asleep.... the only pain they are in is  mental as they see their blood draining away from them.
as for the others, you dont feel pain when a hollowpoint 22. bullet mushrooms into your brain and kinda rendering all nerves usless.

    and for all you vegetarians.......................................................................................

    suck a pickle!
